Well, you've read the notes, the notes had instincts, and now it is time for you to post until the instinctual cows come home.

Fitful sleep - only managed to sleep a few hours at a time, interrupted by long bouts of wakefulness in between.

In the late 1980s, thanks to a Drama Book Shop employee whose brother-in-law was a dancer for the Joffrey Ballet, I saw a performance of the John Cranko ballet The Taming of the Shrew, which was one of the funniest things I had ever seen. Since then, I never heard of any revival of the ballet until two months ago, when I found on Amazon.co.uk a recent DVD release of the ballet from the Stuttgart Ballet, for whom Cranko originally staged it with dancers Richard Cragun and Marcia Haydee as Petruchiop and Katherine. Cranko, a British choreographer who worked in musical theatre, had choreographed Britten's ballet The Prince of the Pagodas for the Royal Ballet, was director of the Stuttgart Ballet at the time of his early death, and the new production was part of a Stuttgart festival.

So, was the ballet as funny as I remembered? It was. I do not know why major ballet companies are not performing this ballet regularly. The score was less dissonant than I remembered; the composer does to Scarlatti what Stravinsky did to Pergolesi in Pulcinella, only Stravinsky did it better. To its benefit, it has a great deal of humor, and at times it reminded me of Respighi's Ancient Airs and Dances.

In summer, 1973, I worked the box office for the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival. Two of the guest stars were Stuttgart Ballet soloists Richard Cragun, an American dancer, and Marcia Haydee, who was - if I recall correctly - Belgian. At the time, they were a romantic couple, and, of all the dancers that summer, they were my favorites. They were charming, always friendly, and seemed to possess less ego than many of the stars that summer. I remember sitting with them at a lobster dinner, where Richard was helping new-to-lobster  diners Marcia and me, devour the crustacean.

I had never checked YouTube for the Cranko ballets, and I just discovered Stuttgart Ballet videos of "Romeo and Juliet," "Onegin" and "The Taming of the Shrew" from 1969. The two Shakespeare ballets feature the wonderful Richard Cragun and Marcia Haydee. Here's the Shrew:

Two more days of ~90 degrees Fahrenheit. Then, only a brief respite before it starts up again next weekend. And just for comic relief, we'll get some rain deluge from the hurricane in between.
