For sheer storytelling brilliance, Marcel Pagnol cannot be bettered. I love the Marseilles trilogy (which became Fanny) and La Femme du Boulanger (which became The Baker's Wife). And his stories, fictional as in Jean de Florette/Manon of the Springs or nonfictional as in My Father's Glory/My Mother's Castle, show how, with the right touch, melodrama can be truly affecting
