Who tips for takeout orders and how much do you tip?

Outback Steakhouse "waitress stiffed a tip on a $735 takeout order, then fired after she complained on Facebook"

15-20%

It's my understanding (and many friends have told me) that normally you don't have to tip if you call in an order and pick it up yourself.  But to me, this situation is much different.  The order was so large that it just screams for a tip!

I have been doing a bit of research on the subject and most people believe tipping is not necessary.  The amount recommended varies.   DR elmore from my reading you are a very generous tipper.

People are more likely to tip if it is a place they frequent.  I tipped at least 30% for my little order at Savona's today.

The temperature has gone down quite a bit.  The high for today was 61, I believe, but that was at midnight.  It was in the 40's this afternoon.

I will, however, respond to Jane's question about tipping for take-out.

I always thought tipping applied to table service and therefore didn't tip for take-out. But several years ago I started frequenting a restaurant for take-out and they gave me such consistently good service--getting my order right, remembering my name and being friendly--that I felt tipping was in order. Especially since I know these people don't get paid much. I don't tip 15% for take-out, though. It varies as I use even amounts and tip in cash, even though I pay for my order with a credit card.

I've noticed that many people, especially young people, give a higher tip than the standard of years ago.

I dont...but I usually tip 30% for good table service, 20% for adequate...less for poor...

You are lucky to find a place like this, and that the staff has stayed consistent enough to remember you.

And what about a massage therapist? Some of them fall into the medical category and I always thought tipping wasn't appropriate. For generic, especially discount, massage, I tip, of course.

For hairdressers, the tipping guidelines have said that you don't need to tip the owner of the salon. But I always found that kind of silly. For one, you don't always know who the owner is. So I tip, period. NO ONE's ever declined my tips.

It's been years since I've had anything delivered.  I've only ordered things to be picked up, so I don't remember what I used to do.

I worked for several years waitressing when i was youbger, Vuxdads mom owned a restaurant in England and he worked there doing everything from bussibg, serving to bartending  so we both know the hardships..
We are generous tippers for an enthusiastic and attentive server... but there are this who act like they're doing you a favor and annoying them...we don't tolerate that nonsense

I have to say if that waitress thought she should get $75  for bringing that order to the curb i think she is out of her mind...especially since it was supposed to be a delivered order!  Honestly if it was I picking it up I would have thrown her a $20 ..

Yup...that's not good customer service from what is supposed to be a service oriented server. ::)
