After we left the group yesterday we taxied up to Lincoln Center to visit the TKTS location there.  We were able to purchase tickets for today's matinee of THE GREAT COMET, but we're not sitting together.  Film at 11...

Just saw this in the National Review:

http://www.nationalreview.com/article/446097/new-yorkers-musical-outstanding

"Under the baton of conductor Rob Berman, the 30-piece Encores! orchestra is right on stage throughout all the action. It beautifully performs Porter’s sophisticated melodies and lush, new arrangements by Josh Clayton and Larry Moore. These musicians are full of surprises, as just the right sound from a bell, triangle, or trombone, at just the right time, elicits fresh titters.

This is a splashy entertainment for fans of musical comedy and the Great American Songbook and anyone who happens to like New York."

DR FJL, thanks so much!

FFAD:
I was wondering if any of you could help me with a little project I'm working on. I need a list of songs from musicals that are about greed; and even better, about people behaving deceptively in the name of greed; like songs about con artists. But really, songs about greed in general would be good. Thanks!

I've read about The Play That Goes Wrong.  Here's the thing: I did it already back in 1978 before anyone had - before Noises Off even.  The entire last twenty minutes of Stages is exactly a play going wrong - everything.  But here's the real thing about it - prior to the play going wrong (I wrote a little spoof of a Victorian melodrama, which we called He Shot the Gun), we show the audience the play going RIGHT.  That's what's missing here and why I know that I would grow weary of The Play That Goes Wrong.  We see everything work perfectly at the final "run-through" and then the audience knows what it's supposed to be when things start going wrong.  We got HUGE laughs every night (no one had seen anything quite like it before) - gunshots not going off, sets malfunctioning, all of it, one thing after another. But without the set-up it wouldn't have nearly been as funny.

But let me illustrate further:  I also did a similar thing in Together Again, trying to relive that - less successful - still funny, but less successful.  This time it was a bad Equity Waiver/community theater production of an Importance of Being Ernest-type play, which we called He Begs to Differ.  An understudy is on, one actress speaks so quietly you can't understand a word she says, the understudy forgets everything, the sets malfunction, etc.  But this time, there was no context of "right" so it was less funny.  And yes, that, too, was before Noises Off.

Has Stages been staged recently?  Can it be licensed?

It hasn't been - it's so firmly set in the 70s I'm not sure it would work today - LACC asked me about doing it there again, but until I figure out if I should update or not, I don't do anything with it.  After the first two productions, I licensed it out several times.

Or is there some leg-pulling going on?

My phone takes the world's worst photos in this type of distance and lighting situation.  If there were no other reason to get another phone, this one would be sufficient.  That having been said, here is some smaller than usual photographic evidence of the boys speaking at the talkback.

Rob Berman:

Thanks for the photos. I always find talkbacks interesting, as you get a feel for those people,

DR Jeanne, we are all hoping there will be a recording.  With Paint Your Wagon, we closed in March and recorded in June or July when the funding was in place.  I'm hoping, if a recording occurs, that it happens sooner.  Fingers are crossed!

The first time TLT did GYPSY, Sharry played Gypsy Rose Lee.  The next time they produced the show, Sharry played Mama Rose.  So, it is kind of fitting that she would make an appearance in this production, even if only for one performance.

That's pretty cool!

I'm here at home, having slept in until 11:30 am!  I haven't been able to do that for a couple of weeks.  I will eventually need to get up and take a shower, get dressed, and go to my union meeting.  Then, I can come back home and do some laundry and TV watching. :)
