Horrible news about the train wreck.

There was a bad train wreck this morning at the Hoboken PATH station, and I've been following it on the CBS News. Three fatalities reported so far.

TOD:  Feet Grow...and grow.

Most of my adult life -- at least I turned 40 -- my foot size was 10 1/2 D.

Then I served a three-year tour on an aircraft carrier.  All the floors (or, decks) are steel.  Suddenly, my feet were 10 1/2 EEE.  A number of years ago, I tried on a pair of sneakers that were 11 1/2 EEEE (yes, that's 4 E's) and they were a perfect fit.  My foot size is generally 11 EEEE or 11 1/2 EEEE to this day.

It's very discomfiting to find that most shoe manufacturers, when making quality shoes, stop at the "normal" D-width.

I've passed on some very smart shoes that didn't go beyond that D-width, let me tell you.

No?  I know it was "some kind" of a moon.

TOD:

I've never been a big Steve McQueen fan, but I do like a lot of his films, in spite of his presence.

THE TOWERING INFERNO
LOVE WITH THE PROPER STRANGER
THE GREAT ESCAPE
THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN
THE SAND PEBBLES
BULLITT

Those would be on my list, alongside "The Thomas Crown Affair".

Bruce your new running shoes look like they have a narrow toe which could have something to do with needing a larger size.  I recently changed the style of running shoes and went up half a size.  Feet do grow too.

Of course they aren't really growing, they are more likely flattening out.

The Blob
The Magnificent Seven
Wanted: Dead or Alive
The Great Escape
Love with the Proper Stranger

THE BLOB was the first scary movie Keith made me watch and probably because of Steve McQueen I liked it.

Was just reading about the new stage version of Holiday Inn, which, to me, sounds awful.  As always, they've shoehorned in tons of Irving Berlin songs and tried to make them work for the show.  One of those songs, Nothing More to Say has been appropriated from my Unsung Irving Berlin album - they should thank me and Lanny because without us that song would still be languishing in Mr. Berlin's trunk because on one would have had the chutzpah to do what we did - when I found it, it was a melody line with a lyric I liked - but no harmonies, no accompaniment.  We did that (this is all in Album Produced By), and just tried to be true to Mr. Berlin's style.  They've just taken our arrangement work and had Larry Blank orchestrate it.

Back from visiting Mom, who was in pretty good spirits today.  She liked getting some M&M's and she wanted to take a ride in her wheelchair.  We walked indoors a bit and then went outside, very briefly.  It was kind of cloudy and blustery - a nice Michigan cider mill day (DR Jane will understand...).

I had to separate this to respond.  The wonderful images that flashed through my mind when reading it...  The house in Franklin was a mistake, but living behind the Cider Mill was heaven.

Well, it's all relative, DR Jane.  But, today was a better day than some I've had with her lately.

Oh, the fresh cider, the fresh donuts that looked like nothing and tasted incredible, watching them make both, and most of all...THE AROMA!

They also sold the best, by far, best candy corn I have ever had.  I wish I knew where they got it from.  They sold Hickory Farm cheeses I could find anywhere else making them another fall treat.

I've heard that when you get very old, like into your 90s your ears start to grow again, but not feet.

I'd read that for some people, their ears and nose never stop growing, but I guess not everyone's does that.

Back from a three-and-a-half mile jog - too hot, really, but needed to get it out of the way.

This is me with my Dad at Franklin Cider Mill, probably around 1954 or '55.  Notice 1) how dressed up people are, and 2) the grease spots on the bag of donuts in Dad's left hand.
