It used to be that there was a hardly enough there to spend a day one we have spent three days and still have not availed ourselves of all the opportunities available. I am so glad we bought the annual pass last year

The day of the Challanger disaster I was home sick recovering from the flu to add to the misery the boiler had gone out so I was wrapped in a blanket over my bathrobe waiting foe the boiler man. While waiting I was watching the coverage of the liftoff The furnace man arrived just as it was about to go and he asked if in minded if he watched before he started work. I said no and he sat on the couch beside me Once we realized what had happened we were holding hands both of us crying staring at the tv in disbelief. After a it he fixed the boiler while I made tea for us and we had acup to calm our nerves before he had to head out to his next job. I don't think we ever even exchanged names

Work, this week, has seemed brutal. Much to do, many to please and I'm the designated go-to person on much of it.

In addition to all that, I am house-sitting in the Oakland Hills. Am tending three chickens and two cats again, although I have seen only one of the cats. The chickens have a much nicer accommodation than the last time I was here and it's unnecessary to let them out in the garden to hunt and peck for exercise.

The day the shuttle crashed was the day that I drove up in the snow to the Hunter Mountain ski town of Windham, N.Y., to try to meet people to plan for the newspaper's expansion up there. When I got back down the mountain, I discovered that the owner and publisher of the paper had been arrested with his best friend as well as the head of the local radio station. They had been caught filming a porn flick with a local lady of the evening. It was something the man was known for, but he wouldn't let us publish his arrest in the paper. He called in a huge amount of favors with local bigwigs and somehow the charges got dropped against the other two guys while his charge was reduced to a single misdemeanor count of solicitation.

He sold the paper a few months after that.
