It's definitely  worse when you lose your  power in a blizzard or ice storm than in a Hurricane as the hurricanes usually come when it  is relatively warm

Good morning, all! I slept late.

I am on my first cup of coffee, pondering a walk to the post office, and wondering how soon the rain will land. it's rather dark and ominous outside.

I am thinking that today is a home renovation day. If I do not end up sitting at the computer all day.

Good morning, all.

I would rather sleep than work today. I'm afraid that's impossible.

Tuesday morning greetings!  AAUW Middletown kicked off its 90th year last night with a festive potluck dinner, a good speaker, and a smooth business meeting.  Madame President is tired today.

It looks like once this rain passes, which will probably be within the hour, there will be no more today.

TOD

In past lifetimes I might have pointed the finger at heat waves, back in the days when I'd be living in some place with no air conditioning.  I despised those times like nothing else.

But not any more.  The two storms that took out our power for three days each take the prize:  the Halloween Nor'easter of 2011 and Hurricane Sandy in 2012.  No electric, no water (if you're on your own system), and the biggie:  no heat.  And conditions were freezing.  Enough was enough.  These two storms are the reason I now have a total-house generator.

I have been through several snow days that included NO TRAVEL and sometimes NO electricity....but that's about it.

Of course this year we have predictions of HEAVIER THAN NORMAL snowfall....so this might be it.

Back in 2012, when David and Britt Cryer were in town for THE CRUCIBLE, they were still living through Hurricane Sandy....they live in New Jersey....

Just thinking back -- I only lived in one apartment in L.A. that had no A/C at all (Clark Drive in the Flats of Beverly), and I don't have any idea now how I survived there without it from 1975 to 1979.  I had what might have been the coolest apartment in the building, and it was miserable during heat waves, whether Santa Anas or the regular kind with humidity.  They were all bad.

The other California apartment that didn't have it (right on the coast in Redondo Beach) truly didn't need it, except during maybe one week out of the year, usually in August or September, and that's probably exactly the weather they're having right now.

But a couple of others had poorly functioning A/Cs, which is very nearly as bad as having none, and that's why I've always looked back on those years as being without it so much of the time.

Good morning!  I don't know if anyone else, besides George) saw Barbra last night, but I thought she was terrific, as was Jimmy Fallon doing his impersonations of Elvis, Michael Buble and Blake Shelton.    What do you think, George?

TOD - The week following Hurricane Ike's visit to SW Ohio on September 14, 2008.  The wind that Sunday afternoon knocked out power all over the Cincinnati/Dayton area and our power company had sent crews to Texas and Louisiana in anticipation that THEY would be hit.  It took a while for enough crews to get here to start restoring our power and we were without it until late Friday.  Fortunately, temperatures were moderate, so we didn't need heat or air conditioning and our household had hot water.  Richard was retired, but I still had to go to work.  I showered and dressed at home and did my hair and make-up at the library.  The big challenge was finding coffee on the way.

I'm off today.  The A/C guy is here now.  Says some fuses were blown in the heating/cooling unit.  It seems to be working.  Let's hope it won't be too expensive.

Played a dress rehearsal last night with just my bass player, and tonight's the full band.  This is the challenging one, where everyone must learn how to squeeze themselves into this very tiny "pit", and then play at volumes that never cover the singers.  And I don't mean hardly ever.  I mean never.  The great thing about this small theater is that we perform everything "acoustically", with no miking.  It can be a challenge but it's so rewarding when you get it right.
