I forgot to mention that back in the 1980s the manager of the apartments I lived had worked as Alan Ladd's stand-in back in the day. That was when I first learned that Ladd was rather short.

I'll just bet that the Man in the Net is the Man in (the) Chair's cousin or something.

DR Jane,

That is very interesting regarding Susan.  That poor child, what she had to endure being a child actress.

I went online and saw pictures of her as a child and as a adult.  What a pretty child and beautiful woman she was.

So awesome that you attended school with her.

DR M Barnum,

No I haven't but you are very encouraging.  Maybe I will.

What have you acted in?

Kate, there are several of us (myself included) who have performed in local community theater productions.  I'm sure that you could find a local group who's doing a play that you'd be perfect for!

I am pleased to say I have heard from DR DERBRUCER.  He had cataract surgery and was finally able to use the computer, not that he is using it much.  I will let him know folks have been asking about him and there were birthday wishes.

Thanks for the update, Jane!

DR BK,

A few days ago my hubby and I were listening to Brent Barrett's duet with a woman.  I think it is called, "Yes, I remember it well"

All of a sudden I said to my hubby.  Is that Lauren Bacall?  He didn't know.   I thought it sure sounds like her with that Unmistakable husky voice that I so Love.

What was it like producing that album?  Did you meet her?  What a honor.  I just love her in all her movies.  What Charisma.  Bogey and Bacall, Noone else comes close to them!

TOD:

I don't know that Ladd was a wonderful actor, but he was very good when his blandness was effectively used for enigma and mystery.

SHANE (a brilliantly meticulous western)
THE BLUE DAHLIA
THE GLASS KEY
THIS GUN FOR HIRE
WHISPERING SMITH (who could forget Frank Faylen as Whitey Dusang)
CITIZEN KANE (not because of Ladd's uncredited bit as a nameless reporter)

...and it's either DUFFY'S TAVERN or VARIETY GIRL where Ladd has a great bit in a skit, where a guy (Howard DeSilva?) slaps a girl around (Veronica Lake?) and tells her to come home.  Ladd, all trenchcoat toughness, says with quiet menace to the brute, "Let me see you do that again."  So the guy slaps the girl again, whereupon Ladd says: "You better go home with him, Lady, he seems pretty tough."   Haven't seen this in years.

I once went to an open house in Los Feliz that had been Ladd's home.  The bar in the rec room was carved with the names of various celebrities who had visited the place.  Very cool.

Of ALL the Alan Ladd movies that have been mentioned, I have only seen "Citizen Kane" that DR Charles Pogue mentioned.  ::)

DR John G,

Any acting tips for me??

I'm not John G., but my tip would be that even though you may need to be "in the moment" for an intimate moment on stage, you must still speak loudly enough and enunciate so that people can hear and understand you, even if you're performing in a small space.  The show that I'm in right now has a couple of actors who can act well, but they aren't speaking either clearly enough or loudly enough to be heard in the empty space.  When it's be filled with people eating dinner while we're acting, we will all definitely need to project and enunciate and they're not rehearsing that.

That's my acting tip for the day. :)

Endless calls.  Did a three-mile jog, had a local CD dealer pick up his stuff, got Susan Egan to commit to guest-starring in the November Kritzerland show (the one with Brent - this is shaping up to be something else), and still trying to replace the guest star for the anniversary show - why this is so daunting I'll never know, but several e-mails are out.

We are actually further along today then we have been in the past several days.  Maybe he's the reason.

There's no denying Ladd was stature-challenged.  Many a photographic trick was used to put him on an even playing field with the taller actors of his day.  He was not an exception, however.  Many actors and actresses were diminutive in stature.

It's really all about proportion.  With Ladd, he often played opposite more rugged types than most matinee idols, and so his height became an issue.  I believe he was considered very sensitive to it.

However....proportionally, he was extremely photogenic:

For TCB:

For everyone else:

All right, TCB, here's another one you can share:

DR John G,

Any acting tips for me??

I am not an actor. A reformed theater critic, but not an actor. I would ask JRand, TCB, George or any of the other thespians in our midst for help in that area.

It's actually been available since March.  I actually bought this back in June.  It's really fun to listen to the recording and follow along with the music.

And the songbook does not have simple piano accompaniment, either.  Even though I can't play it, I like that in a songbook.
