First off, thanks to all for excellent vibes and xylophones - they worked.

Great news, BK!!

A couple weeks ago I spotted a charge on my Discover bill that wasn't mine. I'd gone to the gas station and filled my tank. The charge for $54.69 was on the bill and correct. It was immediately followed, however, by a charge for $70. As I only have one car, the car has only one gas tank, and I hadn't lent my card to anyone, I knew that the $70 wasn't mine. I phoned and reported it, and was credited. A couple days ago I received a letter from Discover saying that they'd investigated the matter, the charge "appeared valid", and that they were reversing the credit. WHAT??!! This is the company that advertises "$0 fraud liability protection".  I told them that the charge wasn't mine, the signature looks nothing like mine, and -- get this -- I'd reported the card missing. They never caught it!!

I phoned again today and I THINK it's been taken care of now. We shall see. I always though that "$0 fraud liability protection" meant that you're completely covered. Maybe they really mean zero protection!
I think I must have dropped the card without realizing it. The $70 charge was at the same gas station, two hours later. I know it'll be resolved in my favor, but one has to wonder at the way some companies do business.

DR Jeanne - Is it possible that that charge was the amount they "secure" when you pay-at-the-pump? I know that Shell will "secure" $55 any time a credit/debit card is used. Much like when you check into a hotel.

2 hours later?

Do you have a surgery date?  Any donations from co-workers for sick leave?

My follow-up appointment with the surgeon is still two weeks from yesterday; so, no surgery date yet.  I did get two days of leave given to me that should show up on my check on the 26th.

Unfortunately, despite my explanation of why there was no money available in the bank; several of my creditors have continued to try and withdraw their payments - again and again.  Finally my credit union has agreed to freeze my account for the next week, but that is not going to help pay all of the over draft charges.

It is a shame they won't waive the fees since you attempted to stop the withdrawals.  I'm sorry they can't freeze your account, except to you, for much longer.

Is that good or bad, elmore?  It sounds like the name of one of MBarnum's Bollywood films.

Don't know what happened to the public page for Kritzerland, but it simply disappeared off the face of Facebook.  What is WITH that place?  I started a new page, so go "like" it.

I was hoping they would set both up at the same time so you needn't wait too long for the surgery date.

I may take a handsaw with me to the appointment, just in case he is in the mood at that moment.

DR Elmore - keep us posted...

In other news, you'll be interested that my book group enthusiastically agreed to read Emile Zola's The Ladies' Paradise as our November selection.  In the course of searching for a credible link to include on our website I found this interesting tidbit:

Lark Rise to Candleford Writer to Adapt Zola Novel for BBC1

Exciting news which I have shared with our friends who introduced us to the Lark Rise series.  I think it is exciting as I haven't read the novel. ;)

Oooh, French depression. In multiple parts. Can't wait. Seriously.

I just got a text message about the Appalachian Christmas show: we will have a trial stage run in Hilton Head SC for five performances the 2nd week of November. Rehearsals begin in New York on Oct 31.

Fantastic!  Congratulations, elmore.
