Thanksgiving story - We used to go to my Aunt and Uncle's house in Des Moines every year. My Aunt wasn't much of a cook. She always ordered the Turkey from a local market.  One year, the owner had his son handle cooking the turkeys and he either forgot to put them in or burned them all (can't remember which) but late in the day we got a call that they were starting over ..we waited for HOURS but eventually the turkey arrived.

Ginny, I hope the people who canceled aren't the ones bringing the pie!

Last night I was sitting in the den with Phoebe the cat.   My dad came down in his robe went around the corner, came back and as he headed up the stairs said he had forgotten to turn on the night light for the cat....just in case she needed to use the litter box in the night.   LOL

Thanksgiving morning greetings!  Our turkey went in the oven precisely at the stroke of 9 and now we're watching the Broadway performances on NBC.  Bye Bye Birdie:P

I'm recording both NBC and CBS's parade broadcasts.  I'll watch them later tonight or maybe tomorrow and make a DVD of the "performances." ;)

This is my Thanksgiving story, a tale that my family will never let me forget.

I love Thanksgiving.  I have very warm childhood memories of that holiday.  Every year, we would have a family gathering at our home.  My aunt, uncle and two cousins, as well as my half-brother Hersh and his family were always there.

We'd sit around the table and, after everybody had stuffed themselves, people would tell jokes.  My uncle, Kenneth, was the #1 storyteller, but on this particular year, I also decided to contribute to the merriment...with disastrous results.

I think it was 1954.  I would have been thirteen-years-old.

Without contemplating the consequences, I told this very funny joke that I'd heard at school, and I told it very well.

Correction!  I didn't just tell it very well.  I told it brilliantly.  I had a captive audience.

Then, I came to the punch line...which ended with the word "f**k".

My mother, who'd had a few too many drinks in her, started laughing hysterically.

Unfortunately, everybody else at the table sat in a stunned silence.  If my mother hadn't been laughing, you could have heard a pin drop.

You see, in 1954, a thirteen-year-old boy did not say "f**k"...particularly in front of adults.

The first one to speak was my father.  Pointing at me, he started shouting at my mother, "You're the one who encourages him!  This is all your doing!"

Within two minutes, all of our very embarrassed guests had excused themselves and left our house.

I don't recall if I was sent to my room or not, but I know I never told another joke at Thanksgiving dinner.

Do you remember the joke??

Thanks, DR Jeanne!

I think it's time to begin my way to 43rd Street.  I am getting hungry!

The turkey came out wonderfully moist and flavorful, one of the best I've ever cooked. I had a wonderful feast but was proud of myself for not overdoing it. I could easily have eaten another entire plate of food.

While I ate my Thanksgiving dinner, I watched MODERN FAMILY which had another winner last night, filled with hilarious antics. The scorpion loose in the house was enough to send me into hysterics.

Then I watched A CHRISTMAS TALE on Blu-ray. Beautiful (for the most part) encode with very natural looking color and sharpness. Contrast wasn't pumped way up, so the colors were more muted than in the 1080p theatrical trailer on the disc in which the color is deeper and warmer. I suspect the director (who approved the transfer) wanted the look of the film a little cold since the family has a lot of frosty encounters among themselves.

All of the bonuses were in high definition. The hour long documentary was iun 1080i but everything else on the disc was in 1080p.

I noticed while I was watching the movie that the cable box was recording a soap oepra. It happened to be ONE LIFE TO LIVE, but it was a rerun of an episode about three weeks ago.

While waiting to shut everything down, I happened on THE MEXICAN on one of the HBO-HD channels. I haven't watched that in years, and I think I'd like to see it again. There is nothing at all for me tonight on TV, so I may pull that off the shelf and revisit it. I've also been hankering to revisit the Rex Harrison/DOCTOR DOLITTLE which I may also watch tonight instead of something new.

I did want to mention that SURVIVOR tonight is a new episode. (It may be a recap episode; that I don't know. The newspaper listed it as "new").

Well, I guess I'll hop off-line and get some writing done. Then I'll head back down to find something I want to watch for the evening.

Now some kid from Hannah Montanna just sang. He was wearing wool gloves that had no fingers.  I never understood the purpose of such gloves--who needs to just keep their palms warm?

In addition to the reasons DR MattH mentioned I can say my mom has worn them when she's had to type and it's been cold.

I also use those gloves very often when i'm biking.

I watched some of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade this morning.

re: turkeys - I love the cook from frozen stuffed ones. They only take like 5-6 hours. And they always come out delicious.

I believe it's a recap show with mostly new footage. I actually enjoy these.

There is a funny clip they keep showing in promos where evil russell is telling McDreamy about making $1.7million last year. That should be fun.
