In other news...

Instead of meeting some friends down at MoMA at 11:00, I shall be meeting them at 11:30.  "Mama Jose" (rhymes with Rose) just needed a few more winks. ;)

...And I just had to listen to this story on NPR's Weekend Edition...

Mazel Tov, Mis Amigos - Jewish Classics Live Again, Set To Latin Beats

It's being re-created live tomorrow afternoon at Lincoln Center's Damrosch Park.  Hmm...

TOD:

During the summer before I turned 8, my aunt and uncle took me and my cousin on a lengthy road trip up the North Carolina coast to see Kitty Hawk and Manteo, and then we proceed from there to Jamestown, Williamsburg, and then RIchmond. We were gone the better part of two weeks.

I figured out later it was to see what kind of traveler I'd be at such a young age since that Christmas was my first trip to NYC.

As for the Topic of the Day...

The first trip I really remember was my first (of two) trips to the Philippines.  I was five-years old.  I liked it. Well, I guess, the proper turn of phrase would have to be, "I was impressed by it".  It was all just so new, so different and so hot!  35 years laters, it still was.

Saturday morning greetings!  It's cooled off here in SW Ohio, too, and we have our windows open - Ahhh!

Today, we're going with Rob to a send-off party for his friend John who's going to Scotland to study linguistics.  It will be nice to see his family and, I hope, the families of many of the other guys from the ol' Scout troop.

Before that, though, Richard is joining his honor guard buddies to provide military honors at the funeral of Mr. Santoro, the gentleman who built our house 50+ years ago for his own family to live in.  Only 2 other families resided here between the Santoros and us.

Oh, and brother-in-law John's youngest daughter moves to Oxford today to become the 3rd generation to attend Miami University.

Is Kitty Hawk really a big bird like the one in the Sherman and Peabody episode on ROCKY AND BULLWINKLE? The Wright Brothers are local boys from Dayton!

TOD - other than trips to Indianapolis to visit my grandmother, the first real trip I remember is Washington, DC, in the fall of 1957.  My dad had been sent there on business and my mother, sister, and I drove to join him for a vacation at the conclusion of his assignment.  It was quite daring, in the late '50s, for a woman and daughters to travel alone like that, especially making an overnight stop and staying in a motel.  It was also quite daring for our parents to take us out of school for a week - I was in first grade and my sister was in high school.

My mother had a distant cousin, Beulah, who was married to a distinguished gentleman who worked for Riggs National Bank.  We stayed with them and did a lot of sightseeing.  Beulah threw a sparkling party in my parents' honor, with many sophisticated guests and a lot of champagne.

TOD:

My first big trip - which I don't remember - was probably when I was three, when we moved from New Jersey to Los Angeles.

The biggest trip that I remember was in the mid seventies when we spent three weeks touring Hong Kong and China.  [My parents had friends there, whom we stayed with, so it cost us only the airfare.]

I'm up.  There is ONE worker over there (so much for "we don't work on Saturday") and he, of course, was doing things right outside the bedroom window, including hosing down a scaffolding so it sounded like it was raining.

Welcome seven GUESTS.  I always enjoy seeing what old threads our GUESTS are looking at - one was looking at one from December 27, 2003, where I found this amazing post by ME - it just shows how fast technology moves and how far we've come in just a few short years:

Back home and waiting for the Dish People.  Yesterday, I used some gift coupons at Staples and got an amazing new thing called a memory stick.  It's the size of a lipstick, and it plugs into any USB port in your computer and has more memory than a zip disc and you don't need the zip drive when you're at work or on location.  I also used the rest of my gift coupons and got a wireless ethernet card which allows you to somehow get on the Internet without a formal connection.  Someone will configure it for me at work on Monday - then, if I'm in a hotel or in the office or wherever, I can just insert the thing into my laptop and it taps into the nearest signal and voila - one is on the Internet without having to use the hotel phone line or ethernet port, thereby saving moolah.
