ON THIS DAY IN THEATRE HISTORY:

1776 opens in 1969 at the 46th Street Theatre.

Audiences are so engrossed in the drama of the signing of the Declaration of Independence that they are willing to forego a bathroom break.

Good morning, all! The alarm went off at 7:30 and I dragged myself out of bed around 8 am. My first errand this morning is a walk down to Music Theatre International to drop off Act One Scene Three of THE MOST HAPPY FELLA. when I get back here, I have to begin the work for Mr Ron Raines' forthcoming concert in Houston.

Speaking of Mr Ron Raines, does any DR have a copy of the music for Woody Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land?" My copy is buried somewhere in a carton in the archives of Miami University Library; I never thought I'd use the song agan, but what the hell do I know?

DR BK, why hasn't your Superman song ever been recorded? Today's notes were quite a lot of fun.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy Birthday to DD Jennifer !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Favorite talk show host?

How could I choose anybody except Merv Griffin?

He was a very kind, gracious man.

When I got a contract to write his unauthorized biography, he cooperated with me fully.  Sat with me for many interviews.  He did not demand editorial approval, just asked to check the final manuscript for factual errors.

And, after the book was published, he brought me onto the show.

And the word of the day is: MANSUETUDE!
Manfred was so filled with MANSUETUDE that he often left his MATE UNUSED.

I had a long conversation with my friend Betty of the Library of Congress Music Division; they're planning a 2-day event around Steven Suskin's new book the first week of May. I need to book a hotel rservation.

I'm not a big fan of talk shows.

But I do prefer the old style, where people were allowed to finish a sentence before the next person spoke.

I do not like shows where the host interrupts his guests before they even get half a sentence out.

SUPERMAN IS DEAD & WAS IT REALLY ALL THAT THRILLING should maybe be on the next Guy Haines album.   Another round of terrific notes.

I used to watch a lot of the talk shows and enjoyed them all, but no one beats Johnny!  Simply the greatest!  Dick Cavett used to do great one-on-one interviews, but watching some of those on TCM in the last year or so, I had forgotten how often he'd try to compete with the guest by trying to correlate something in his own life to theirs or just get a little self-aggrandizing sometimes.  You wanted to say:  "I don't care about your thoughts or experiences, Dick, I want to hear your guests'."

Out of curiosity, I just looked up the Suskin book over at Amazon and practically went into sticker shock.

Do you have any idea how many cookbooks I can get for that price?

For those that have been enjoying bk's "insider's take" on The Business called Show, here is another perspective:  Peter Filichia takes us inside the recording studio.

I take it, then, that your book didn't delve into the elements that bk referred to in passing [if you know what I mean].   :)

At that point, it was just rumor.

And I'm sure a closeted subject of a biography would be eager and willing to expose his private life so blatantly!

At that point, few people in mainstream America would have understood the rumor.

Well, I need to head out.  I've people to meet, deliveries to make, shopping to do.

Now, if I can only light a fire under der Brucer's buns so that I can get downtown.
