It is more fun to talk with someone who doesn't use long, difficult words but rather short, easy words like "What about lunch?"

There is nothing like a good A.A. Milne quote to brighten one's day.

That's not from anything in case you were wondering.

A favourite line of mine from Terry Pratchett's novel THUD:

"You can't do bad things and call yourselves the good guys."

BK,  not having TIVO (and not wanting yet another time-wasting machine in my house) I caught HOSTILE WITNESS on TCM the other night after watching half of VICTIM (a really interesting film I'd like to see all of sometime) and stayed up till almost 4:00 in the morning watching it.  Like Bob Osborne, I didn't even know it existed...though I was quite well aware of the play.  HOSTILE WITNESS was the first play that I myself bought a ticket for and didn't see as part of a school outing.  I saw it at the Shubert Theatre (alas, now no more) in Cincinnati in 1967.  Milland was starring; Melville Cooper played the judge (The role in the film played by the undying Felix Aymler).  I even took a date.  I remember liking the play and it had had a successful run on Broadway and the West End.

The film is a bit hoary.  Ray in a bad toupe and whatever of his real hair is badly dyed.  He looks long-in-the-tooth and tired.  His eyes look like he's still playing in The Man with The X-Ray Eyes.  Unfortunately, the playwright who adapted his play made it a bit flatulent when trying to open it up for film.  The first twenty minutes of the movie where accidents, murders, and koshing happen isn't even in the play which basically starts out with solicitor Milland calling his team together and telling them he's about to be "arrested for murder".  It all worked a little better as a play.

The play hasn't been much revived; probably because of its large cast, though I do remember a dinner theatre I was playing at advertising it for another of their theatres, starring Craig Stevens.

Today is the first day in literally weeks (maybe months) that I have not had a pile of review discs to plow through.  I know that probably sounds like whining, but MattH will most likely concur that there's at least a modicum of pressure to watch, reasonably analyze and cogently write about all this stuff, and sometimes it can be a bit of a chore.  So today I am working on charts for various groups and will probably have a nice workout at the gym.

I'm really looking forward to the debate this Friday!

We had an absolutely torrential downpour for about 5 minutes yesterday--the first sizable rain we've had here in months!  A friend of ours was driving on the freeway when it happened and she said traffic pretty much stopped because visibility was so poor.

More than a little pressure when the box sets build up. September and November are my heavy months for TV box sets, so I run myself ragged trying to get to everything. This deluge will let up in a couple of weeks when I've gotten through all of last season's releases. I still have FIRDAY THE 13th and NUMBERS to go.

Re:  The End.  I've always thought it strange that movies seemingly needed to advertise their completion.  Wouldn't the audience pretty much figure it out once the screen went black and the house lights came up?  ;)

Yes, boxed sets are the worst, and that seems to be pretty much all I get.  ;)  Of course, I choose a lot of them, so I can't blame Jose, as much as I'd like to.

For some reason, The Other Boleyn Girl is showing up on my review queue, which means it will be mailed today.  Hasn't that been out for a long time?  I'm wondering if maybe it's a new Blu-Ray version--sometimes the database guy forgets to notate if it's HD or not.

The only way to watch the Emmys when they don't choose a decent host (as in the last two years) is to speed through them as I did last night. I watch tons of TV so unlike bk I knew everyone there, but the winners are what's important to me: not the clothes, the dates with the celebrities, or the (lack of) production.

I was disappointed in a few of the winners. I think 30 ROCK is overpraised. At its best, it's very funny, but it wasn't at its best last season certainly not near the end when they came back from the strike. THE OFFICE is much more consistently hilarious to me.

I was pleased that new shows like MAD MEN, PUSHING DAISIES, DAMAGES, BREAKING BAD at least went home with something.

But another Emmy for Jeremy Piven in ENTOURAGE? Nope, not deserved.

At least James Spader wasn't given another Emmy for BOSTON LEGAL. I'd rather have seen Michael C. Hall win for DEXTER, but Brian Cranston's surprise win (the biggest surprise of the night) wasn't a bad choice at all.

I am listening to Hildegard von Bingen (AKA Hildegard von Bingy Wingy), which of course raises the question, how in $(*& did they record her close to a millenium ago?

And the corollary: What is she doing with all of those royalties now?
