I've told this story before, but I'll repeat it. I was referred to HHW by Broadway writer/critic Ken Mandelbaum. I had enjoyed bk's recordings on his various labels for years, and in one of Ken's articles, he mentioned that Bruce was no longer with that last unmentionable company. I wrote him an e-mail asking if he knew where bk had landed, and he directed me here.

I came in during the last weeks/months of the old format. I have NO IDEA how long ago that was, but I do feel like an "old timer" here since I transitioned from the old text-only format to this newer, sleeker, more fun format.

I watched the first disc in the Ultimate Collectors Edition of "How the West Was Won" last night.

The good news is that this film has never looked better on home video.  This DVD is head-and-shoulders above every version I've seen outside of a theater.

I was surprised, however, to discover several bits of dirt in the opening shot of mountains and soon realized these spots were on the camera lens.   They remained stable while the video kept moving.  At first, I wondered if my plasma HDTV had suddenly developed acne...but No!  When the scene changed, the spots were gone.

It's also interesting to note that although the seams are gone, there are telltale color variations in the three panels.  The middle panel's colors are generally more saturated while the left and right panels are a bit lighter.  It's prominent only when there is blue sky.

I cannot argue BK's comments at all about what might have been done.  I think those color issues "could have been" corrected digitally, but I'm not at all unhappy with what I have seen.

The sound on my system was wonderful.....BUT, I'll admit, there are places where Newman's score should just "pop" and doesn't...primarily the scene where the raft is cut loose and splashed into the river.

Laters....

I found this "little corner of the Internet" when I started working with BK over a year ago and he told me about it.

I had the most peculiar and vivid dream early this morning--a radio station was having a sort of karaoke contest and was asking people to sing Rick Astley's "Cry for Help."  I went to the station and when it was my turn to sing, I couldn't remember the lyric.  Isn't that most peculiar (and vivid)?

Now, Ken Mandelbaum directed me here. Here's the big question:

Where is HE now? Since leaving Broadway.com, I have read nothing from him on the internet. I know a lot of people did not like him for various reasons, but I always enjoyed his writing and would love to continue reading what he has to say about Broadway past and present. Does anyone know anything?

Today I'll be working of THE LOVE GURU in the afternoon and likely early evening since the disc does appear to have a fair amount of bonus material.

However, I DO plan to watch the Blu-ray Smilebox edition of HOW THE WEST WAS WON if my disc arrives from Amazon today as I'm hoping.

That means I won't get to see BURN NOTICE until tomorrow or sometime this weekend most likely.

I like Ken, too.  He was most interested in this apparently big budget, fully orchestrated demo of "Darling of the Day" I came across at BK's former favorite haunt A-1 Record Finders on Melrose.  WEHT Brian at A-1, BK?

BK himself emailed me to tell me of this here site.  We had been emailing off and on since "meeting" on the late and not at all lamented RATM (now RATN, with the "N" being the first initial of its only poster's surname, LOL).

I am madly trying to get through the Busby Berkeley boxed set.  Having to endure Dick Powell is making that rather difficult, since he's the star of most of the films.  ;)  I watched several W&G episodes last night.  I know a lot of people don't like the show, and it certainly had faded from its heyday, but can Karen & Jack still make me LOL with great regularity.  Also watched a couple of Cybill episodes--again, it's the supporting players who make this show work, mostly Baranski, who's hilarious.  I had forgotten that a young and almost anemic looking Alicia Witt (from L&O) was the younger daughter.

As for the Topic of the Day...

Every time this comes up, I can never really remember just exactly how or why I came to this site.  I just started posting one day, and, well, the rest is history.  However...

I just searched the Archives, and it was interesting to note those periods of time where I was "errant and truant" from anywhere to a few days to a few months.  I started clicking on some of the Daily Discussion links that still had "NEW" by them, and, sure enough, they were new to me.  I had forgotten(?) that even though I had posted on the old "brown" board, it took me a few weeks to post on the new "blue" board.  I think that must have coincided a production I was working on.

It was also fun seeing the names and faces of some former DRs including the "original" DR RonPulliam.  ;)

On tv tonight here:

BIG BROTHER 10.

And the premiere of SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE CANADA (which i am looking forward to).

Btw, i don't know that anyone here would love this type of show, but i watched the first episode of the CW's PRIVILEGED and really liked it. The lead (joanna garcia from REBA is excellent in this part).

And remember all the frantic handwringing from some when we learned that the format of HHW was to change. And some DRs actually left because of it.

The old board seems so prehistoric, now. And being able to post photos and have avatars makes things so much more fun. It is really so much cozier to be able to "see" the people you are conversing with day after day...and it makes it so much easier to remember who is who

I recall that when I first came on board I thought that Bruce Kimmel was Der Brucer! And that S. Woody White was BK's partner! LOL!

Does anyone know anything?

'Tis indeed a mystery.

Someone over at All That Chat is still in touch with him by email, so we know Ken is still alive, but other than that, no idea as to where he is or what [if anything] he is doing.  I miss his considered opinions, as well.

Well, after some creative Google-ing...

09/03/2002: "OUT OF THE LOOP"

Quote

Well, this will be my first time posting here, so I guess I officially become a lurker now - an upgrade(?) from just a reader. ;-)

My name is Jose C. Simbulan. I am fortunate enough to make my living as a professional musician - pianist/keyboard player/musical director/conductor. I most recently had the honor of playing rehearsals for the Kennedy Center's Sondheim Celebration productions of SWEENEY TODD and A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC. Upcoming projects include EVITA for a local university, CARMEN JONES at the Kennedy Center, and SOUTH PACIFIC at Arena Stage

I work locally (D.C. and Richmond) and regionally - pick a region, any region. One of my specialties is playing auditions - I LOVE to play auditions. Each Spring and Fall I get to indulge that pleasure by playing for the Southeastern Theatre Conference (SETC) auditions, and the Unified Professional Theatre Auditions (UPTA). There's nothing like playing for 200-300 in one day! -Really, I do like to do this. *I'll be in Charlotte this weekend for the Fall SETCs.

For all you singers out there: Train your pianists!

For all you pianists our there: Train your singers!

I must take this chance to thank BK for all his work on those UNSUNG MUSICALS and LOST IN BOSTON albums. Wonderful material, and they've provided many an opportunity for me to work on my transcription skills as singers have requested material from those albums for auditions, cabarets, etc. *I was always hoping some publishing deal could be worked out in conjunction with those albums... ah, well...

It has been a joy reading everyone's posts - not just today, but for the past couple of months - ever since I first decided to head on over to this site. Hopefully, I'll find myself fully in the loop in no time!

Keep up the great work!

*Oh, and how does one go about bolding and italicizing within the posts?

DR JMK - How many episodes in the Cybill set?  Does the packaging indicate what seasons they're from?  Do you think they're waiting to see if this sells before just issuing the full seasons?

My bad (I removed my first post)--there's no indication which seasons they come from.  My hunch is, yes, it's a "test release," but whether they'll release full seasons is anyone's guess.  It's not a typical big studio release--it's from Carsey-Werner's own label, which is kind of interesting.

And for those "completists" out there...

If you start at this link:

11/09/2001: "Welcome"

You can start reading HHW from the very beginning.  -Then just increase the number of the archive by one (1) to go to the next day.

http://www.haineshisway.com/archives/00000004.html

etc., etc., etc.
