There seems to be a surge in unsolicited phone fundraising. I'm on the Do Not Call list but it seems to do little good. I don't have a "relationship" with any of the nonprofit orgs or the for profit business that have suddenly started calling and when you mention the Do Not Call list some of them just laugh as you hang up. Caller ID is my friend and I now ignore all calls if I don't know the number or name.

I also like Robert Mitchum films.  He was one of the "greats".  OUT OF THE PAST, CROSSFIRE, THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER, THE ENEMY BELOW, CAPE FEAR, THE FRIENDS OF EDDIE COYLE and FAREWELL, MY LOVELY are my favorites.

I also enjoyed MAN WITH THE GUN.

Many years ago, I handled publicity for Mitchum's actor son, Chris.

Very Warm for May....here in Oakland today.

Two record highs for Oakland at risk today and tomorrow.

I believe F 95 is our projected high.  That's hot for here.

I'm very fond of Robert Mitchum, and two performances many folks never mention are "What A Way to Go" in which he's terrific, and "Ryan's Daughter", a much underrated, understated performance.

I must say i was quite surprised by the winner. I thought her beauty shot (covergirl) was the best by far (what kind of photographer says he's done and then has horrible shots of the other two girls who are stunning???). I thought her runway was great. But i really thought the #2 girl was the best and was going to win. But i am still happy with the result (usually i cannot stand the winner!.

Off to do some this and that.  Congratulations to DR MATTH on over 30,000 posts!

I forgot my question for MR BK yesterday!  Was your muse Margaret amused when her father Dave Willock played the father of a girl named MARGIE on television?

Well, actually, I passed 30,000 some time ago and so have you, DR JRand. I think I passed 34,000. Perhaps that's what bk meant.

Good morning!

Overcast and still this morning. I think we have a very soft rain during the early morning hours, and the forecast says much more rain is coming today, but so far it's calm.

About bk's comment concerning owning the MGM THE THIEF OF BAGDAD. One simply can't own everything, and I had a DVD-R copy of it recorded years ago from TCM for reference (naturally, I can't use it in the review to compare image quality since it's not an official release). Why wouldn't I replace it with the MGM when it became available? Because despite its classic status, it's never been a film I want to revisit regularly. Sue me.

Now, if someone wants to send me the MGM copy, I'll be glad to sync them up and do a frame-by-frame comparison, but unless someone's going to foot the bill to buy every version of a film available so I can do comparisons in reviews, I think it's an unfair and unjustified criticism.

How clever of Ryan Seacrest last night to name David Archuleta first as being in the finals attempting to disguise the fact that David Cook was likely the top vote getter and that second place was likely a close call between David Archuleta and Syesha.

No need to try to make it seem as if David Cook is the underdog. Unless he stumbles mightily in the finals, I think he's got it locked up.

When I got the press release from Paramount and saw what the list price was for the set, I just about fainted. I wondered who on earth would pay that kind of money for the show, no matter how much they might want it.

I haven't bouoght TORCHWOOD yet because I thought the price was too high for 13 episodes.

Well I had the MGM Thief of Bagdad and my review of the new Criterion Thief of Bagdad has been up for a few days at DVDTalk, so I'll weigh in, especially since I discuss this in my review.  MGM's did have a better red palette, but the print was in noticeably worse shape than the Criterion.  The Criterion print is virtually scratch free (in fact, I only counted two on the four times I made it through the feature to get the commentaries and music/effects track).  The Criterion does seem to me to be just a tiny bit brown, which detracts mostly from the reds.  The blues look fantastic, the greens slightly less so.  There's my 4 cents worth.  :)

I cannot decide if the current DVD I'm reviewing, DAPHNE, (about Daphne DuMaurier's lesbian proclivities) is an earnest drama or some little known Christopher Guest parody.   ;D

And MGM is pretty notorious about not doing much clean-up on films they release, so your comments, DR JMK, are not surprising.

I'll be interested to read your comments, Matt.   :)  And I have to say, the reds at times look OK--for instance notice them when you get to the all-seeing eye sequence.  Maybe it's because the contrast is so much more extreme then, since it's in the dark, but that red looks relatively OK to me.

I thought the reds were very well deliniated. That turban Veidt wears in his opening moment is gorgeously saturated and textured on my screen.
