THE MORNING CHUCKLE

NEW YORKER
Quote
SHEEPISH
by Paul Rudnick
...
Enough already. I’m Troy, a gay sheep, and I’ll tell you the truth. Although I’m conflicted about calling myself a gay sheep, because I don’t like to think that my sexuality defines me; let’s just say that I’m a sheep who happens to be gay. Being gay is just a simple biological fact, like having a fleecy undercoat or bleating while you’re being shorn, or getting aroused whenever you see a bulky turtleneck sweater.

When I was growing up, I assumed that I’d be just like everybody else, and that someday I’d be bred with a ewe and slaughtered. But, of course, those other feelings were always there; even when I was only a few years old I would gaze at another male lamb and think about sharing a stall, with just enough hay and maybe a nice mid-century trough. I tried not to focus on my urges, and whenever my mom caught me rubbing up against the fence post that I called Skipper I’d pretend I had lice. But as the years went by I started to act on my desires, first with Ed, who was a ram, if you know what I mean. Later, I became involved with Rick, a sheep my own age, although after our encounters Rick would always claim that he was drunk on compost, and he’d butt me with his head and insist, “Dude, let’s go get us some mutton.”

Finally, my dad found me with Rick, and he flew into a blind rage, yelling that he had no son, and that if I was lucky I’d end up as a cheap Peruvian cardigan worn by a truck-stop hooker in Alaska. And so I ran away, and I went wild. I experimented with everyone and everything. Bulls. Mules. Duck, duck, goose. I found out exactly why they’re called the Three Little Pigs. Call me Old McDonald, because I had the farm. I even made some adult films, and maybe you’ve heard of them: “Wet Wool,” “Lassie, Come Here,” and the mega-selling “Hoof and Mouth.” Then, one morning, I woke up next to a horse, a hen, and an ear of corn—that’s right, all the food groups. And I was disgusted with myself. What was I, livestock?

Also, it's just too coincidental that another two SG's got together at some point to conceive an SG child--they already have this situation with Nikki, D.L. and Micha.  I think it just makes the storyline too pat and confined.

TOD:

I couldn't begin the name them all. Just Broadway show scores where I love every song (MAME, SWEET CHARITY, HOW TO SUCCEED, ANYONE CAN WHISTLE, OLIVER, FUNNY GIRL, BYE BYE BIRDIE, CAMELOT, I DO! I DO!, CABARET, 1776, and on and on and on) would go on for pages.

Then you have great movie songs (scores like MARY POPPINS and single items like "Moon River" or "Charade") could go on for pages.

And then pop songs like most of what Petula Clark sang and the Supremes and Peter, Paul, and Mary and then single hits by groups like The FOur Tops, the Temptations, Marvin Gaye, the Beatles. Oh, my, it would be an endless list, and I couldn't possibly pick favorites.

I do have those two hours of dramatic shows from last night to watch today, and then I guess I'll watch OPEN SEASON on Blu-ray. That should lead up to another very full night of TV with several timeslots containing three shows that I love watching: (e.g. 9 p.m. has VERONICA MARS, HOUSE, and L&O:CI; 10 p.m. has L&O:SVU, BOSTON LEGAL, and DIRT). Argh!

DR Edi:

Yes, Brenda's adventures with "Kitty" were always good for a laugh. And she could never stop calling the cat "he/him" even after "he" gave birth. Just love this show, unlike any other on TV with its masterful blend of characters.

TOD:
UNCHAINED MELODY (Could be from the '50's but I wasn't aware of it until the '60's)--my all-time favorite pop song.
CRAZY--I've never been a country music fan, but I loovve Patsy Cline, and esp this song.
Walkin' After Midnight--more PC
Stay
Silhouettes (are these two '50's or '60's?)
Moon River
Beyond the Sea
Mack the Knife
Sealed with a Kiss
Since I Fell for You

There are others. These are off the top of my head. Some songs, such as When I Fall in Love I didn't hear until the '60's (Lettermen version),  but actually came out earlier.

Good Night, Sweetheart --was that the '60's? I didn't hear it until later (that I recall)

There are news helicopters circling near my neighborhood. They appear to be looking at something about a mile away.

A helicopter just flew over my house, flying quite low, a moment ago. And I'm about 2500 miles away from you.

When I woke up this morning it was 7 degrees outside, with a wind chill of -5. BRRRR!!!

I am now wearing so many layers that I could fall over and not get hurt.

WOOL longjohns (the ones I never wear)
Black cords
2 pair of socks
White cotton turtleneck
Heavy LLBean grey marl pullover
Boiled wool German clogs

And when I go out I'll be adding my Canadian alpaca coat, scarf, lined gloves, and earmuffs. Will this California girl ever completely acclimate to cold weather???

Some, yes.  But since there are supposedly only 34 names on the List, it strikes me as unlikely that there would be more than one set matching up.

Maybe it's possible that ability to develop powers can be spread through sexual contact, though we haven't seen that evident in the wives of either Matt, Nathan or Ted Sprague.

Good Morning!

I woke up earlier feeling quite rested and relaxed, and then when I looked at the clock... 1:20 - ?!?!?!?!??!

However, once I got back to sleep, the next time I woke up it was 8:30... then 9:18... then 10:15... ;)

Of course, I could list the entire 60s output of Bacharach and David, most especially Walk On By, Are You There (With Another Girl), Here I Am, and on and on and on.

I have no Beatles songs on my list because there are simply too many to choose.  They would be a list unto themselves.

All right, put your thinking caps on - we need uptempo songs for Joan Ryan's show - she's very strange about uptempo songs and feels they're all corny - until we find one that I can do something with to make it okay.  So, let's have some uptempo songs - they have to be known, not too chestnutty (unless you love it) and some should be from shows.

Bernard Mellowmood is one of my favorite writers.

I'm still trying to develop a list for the TOD, but "My Guy" is one of my all-time favorites; does that count as 1960's?

I have seen THE CLOSET (mentioned in bk's notes today), and it's an OK comedy. Parts I liked very much; parts were absurd. It was SO hard seeing Gerard Depardieu in this after thinking of him as a hunk for so many years.
