TOD, there isn't much that appeals to me for current funny people. Because of something Shannon said to her brother, Boone, in last week's episode, I was stunned to learn that he is, in fact, straight...and that he has been in love with her (not a blood relative, but a half-sister by marriage). Last week she made a pissy comment to him about whether someone was his "new boyfriend." I'm guessing that was a red herring, of sorts.

I caught that too, and I'm with you, DR RLP (sorry, once I have name association, it sticks....). I had sort of thought that it was a dream, and once they got to the naughty, quasi-incestuous bits, I said it out loud to the DP. But the comment from last week was most puzzling. And, I have a feeling, closer to the character's truth.

But, oh, those eyes!

True. The alien movie, Signs, had me on the edge of my seat throughout most of the film (it fed into my actual life long fear of alien invasion--good thing I wasn't living in 1938!) I believe (if you can believe what you read in airline magazines) that she is the "house" comedian at the NY, NY casino in Las Venus. I guess it's kinda like the Dion, John, Manilow deals, but without the big bucks. Or the press.

I think Ellen DeGeneres is a hoot; Cindy William's always makes me laugh. Steve Martin is funny most of the time.

Classic comic performers whom I know and love only through their recordings:

Tom Lehrer, Allan Sherman, Flanders & Swann, the brothers Smothers and Marx, Jack Benny, Bergen & McCarthy, Don Ameche & Francis Langford (as the Bickersons), Burns & Allen, Abbot & Costello.

Just plain old funny without being "edgy" has kind of gone the way of the dodo nowadays, but Bill Irwin and Bill Cosby are both masters of the fine art of generating laughter. In an entirely different vein, the little that I've seen of Eddie Izzard has had me in stitches, and I love George Carlin's linguistic observations (his political ranting much less so).

Oh! Almost forgot the most brilliantly funny TV characters of the 90s, IMHO... the Animaniacs!

Congratulations on your play and the reading DRMS!!

IPOD....hmmmmmmmmmmmm......electronics are wonderful.

I enjoyed CANDIDE very much. Yes there was much SCHTICK - much of it unnecessary, but it was a concept from beginning to end, and the music was so glorious that it survived.

Kristen was so very funny and in glorious voice as Cunegonde. I enjoyed Paul Groves as Candide although is costume did him no favors. Patti LuPone was Patti and made the most of The Old Lady. A couple of staging things bothered me A LOT. In "Oh Happy We" - Cunegonde and Candide sang their completely opposite views of marriage TO each other. And in "I Am So Easily Assimilated" it was established early on that the four amigos couldn't lift The Old Lady even after many attempts....then at the end of the song TWO of them picked her up and moved her downstage.

I didn't care for Donald Trump - and the very LARGE man who sang the Dutch Captain (and other parts) was off-tempo in "Bon Voyage".

Groucho Marx, Jack Benny, Lucille Ball - never FAILED to make me laugh, NEVER.

Red Skelton and Allan Sherman - so funny.

Nowadays....hmmmmmmm...... Eddie Izzard, yes. I don't know....sometimes I see a comic who makes me laugh, but not often. I do agree that Barry Humphries/Dame Edna is wonderful.

I am distressed at how easily some new TV actress is dubbed the "new" Lucille Ball - everyone from Kelly Ripa to the unfunny Debra Messing, and how they accept the accolade as their due.

I think if some of the people on television were as funny as their writers or even half as funny as they think they are - we might have something.

I missed that line! The kettle started whistling just as I heard her say "You've made a decision?" and I missed the last few lines of the show but took it that she had been fired because she had been "Right, but for the wrong reason"

I guessed THE SIXTH SENSE within 15 minutes of the movie's start, but his next one UNBREAKABLE was my favorite of his films, and it made the least money of any of them. I loved that film.

I felt so cheated with SIGNS that I didn't even watch or rent THE VILLAGE. I may watch it when it tops up on a premium movie channel like HBO, but I won't pay out another dime for his films.

I knew Elisabeth Rohm was leaving the show, and they'd been leading up to her leaving/being fired all season by her being at odds with the DA's office over their tactics in winning cases or the stands they took in various matters.

The fact that she declared herself a lesbian at fade-out was astounding to me. In four years of her being on the show, I had NO CLUE her character was a lesbian. Maybe that's a good thing.

I'm not sorry she's gone, however. She never quite got into the rhythm of the acting on LAW & ORDER. (BTW, I liked her fine in the first season of ANGEL.)

It had more to do with my missing her guest host stints on the Late Show last fall. She said it showed a distinct lack of support on my part. I explained that I never watch The Late Show, no matter who is on. She began comparing me to Matthew Broderick, saying that he never misses SJP's tv appearances. I told her that I am not Matthew Broderick. And she said, "You're telling me?" and stormed out. We haven't spoke to each other since. She left one of her prosthetic legs behind. I haven't sent it back in the hope that she might call and ask for it, but it's been months so I guess she's moved on to other things.

MattH & Vixmom: yes, that parting line was a complete non sequitur, if you ask me, which is why Betsy and I have appropriated it for any and all conversational reasons. Some sample repartee from our household:

Me: "Would you bring me some coffee, honey?"
Betsy: "Is this because I'm a lesbian?"

or, even better:

Betsy: "Did you close the garage door?"
Me: "Is this because I'm a lesbian?"

I agree MattH that Elizabeth never quite gelled on L&O. Betsy's comment last night was "bring back Carey Lowell or Angie Harmon!" And, also, when she saw the preview featuring the new girl on the block, "Can't they hire anyone older than 25?"

TOD: I second the motion about Ellen DeGeneres. Betsy & I still laugh about her appearance several years ago on Rosie's show, where she did an hilarious riff about having a kid. One of the tabloids had reported she was pregnant, which she said was a big surprise to her, and that she now had so much to do. "I have to buy baby things, hire a nanny--except, you know Hillary Clinton said it takes a village. So I had to find a village. I found one--it's more of an enclave, really. And it turns out they're nomads. So everyday when I come home from work, I have to go searching for them." It was truly hysterical.
