I think this year's Independence Feasting will include fried chicken and other picnic foods.  Then we head on up to the roof of one of the shoreline hotels, and we watch fireworks.

Tonight, I'm going to try my hand at a tamale pie.  That's pronounced ta-ma-lee, not ta-mail.  How it comes out will be...interesting.

Well, I've been at work since noon and now I can leave!!  (I came in today so that I don't have to use any vacation this week, since my aunt is visiting.)  Anyway, I'm going to go to the store to get some S'mores ingredients and see if my parents are doing anything tonight.  If they have plans, I'll save the S'more stuff for tomorrow and do some things at home...finish up a couple of CDs that I'm compiling, maybe do a little cleaning (maybe) and some laundry (definitely!).  Otherwise, just gonna putter about.

Watch cry.
New it wasn't right but I'm lazy.
Interesting how the same idea turned up in "Into The Woods".
I think "Catch Phrase" is a TV game show.

Back from doing some errrands. Had an interesting chat at Trader Joe's. I tend to talk to people who interest me if they seem approachable. I'm a writer, I'm curious. This drives certain of my dear friends nuts, but hey. Anyway, I chatted with an older gentleman who is the father of Slash (of Guns N' Roses, now of Velver Revolver). His son is number one on the charts this week. That's what we talked about - how does it feel to have a child who is a huge rock star.  Same as having one who isn't is the consensus. As a parent you're grateful they're healthy and happy. That applies whether they work at Hamburger Hamlet or happen to have the number one album in the nation,

Panni I even talk to people who don’t seem approachable.  Sometimes I succeed, other times I get some very strange looks. ;D

Wow, had a busy day.  Spent much of the morning baking muffins and cookies to take to my sister's house.  Her husband's family arrived today from Nunavut.  And a bunch of people went over there to greet them.  I sometimes forget how much energy a 4 yr old and a 9 yr old have.  They were running around the block so many times, it was hard to keep up with them.

They went to pick up their car, so I came home and ate.

I just love these kids and I brought the boy a spiderman that has a raft you can take in your bath.  He decided to take off the paddles and play hockey with a ping pong ball. :)

Kids are so cute!

I talk to people all the time....usually it turns out well.  And in doing so I have met the woman who's grandmother sold the land to the US Government that became Pearl Harbor, a woman whose grandfather laid out the first 18-hole golf course in the US, a man whose great great grandfather invented the Krag carbine - the gun Teddy Roosevelt carried in his charge up San Juan hill, the grandson of the inventor of the lawn sprinkler.....a woman whose father was one of the founders of Actors Equity and indeed had membership card #3 - he also appeared in THE IMMORALIST on Broadway with James Dean.

And all of this is INDIANA......talk to people!!!

DR Question:

Joy and I had a little picnic in Riverside Park, one block away, and it got me thinking about parks.  I've such warm feelings about SO many New York parks, but am wondering about those of you in other cities: How often do you go to parks?  Do you have parks near you?  If not, do you feel the natural beauty of your surroundings compensates for the lack of parks?

Parks - I used to enjoy High Park in Toronto. I think that DR Dan-in-TO lives near there.
In Boulder there was a little park onto which the the back of my house opened. Beyond that - gorgeous mountains in the distance. I constantly had deer in the yard.
Here in Studio City, a small neighborhood park is a three minute walk from the house. I take the Wonderdog there twice a day. I've gotten to know a lovely group of other dog owners there.
Parks are good things!

LOL.....even in that group, DRPANNI....you would be MOST interesting.  Indiana wants you...LOL.

There are two parks in my home town.  The Old Town Park which used to be on the edge of town....but has been built up all around....very small, but a couple of shelter houses and some swings.

The New Town Park....with a huge swimming pool....lots of hills and trees...lots of shelter houses (homes?) and Playground equipment.  The new park is within walking distance of my house, and that is where we had our family reunion last Sunday.

Here is where I live.

My house is the RED STAR.

New Town Park is slightly to the right where it says Indianapolis Rd.

Old Town Park is at the bottom of the picture where Highway 67 is marked.   ;D

Michael and I went to a very gay picnic earlier today, and over-indulged in all manner of foodstuffs...bratwurst, potato salad, rhubarb pudding, sushi, veggie burgers, some wonderful olives, a spectacular four-bean salad, vegetables and dips, cheeses, berries and melons, some dee-lish red wine, and on and on and on...

Oh, my aching belly!

Ashland has the beautiful Lithia Park which was designed by the same man who designed the Golden Gate Park.  Though not as large, I believe our park is prettier.

Growing up in Cheviot Hills, CA I lived around the corner from Rancho Park.  I practically lived there. It was a large park with lots of activities, including tennis.  When things got tough at home it was my refuge.  It also had a great area in the back of the park-perfect for “parking”.  Most of my dates would “park” in the front lot where I knew I was safe as the police would be by shortly to chase us away.  ;D Of course I showed Keith my special spot. ;)

There are two parks about equa-distant from my home. The smaller of the two is Park Road Park, and I go there fairly often to feed the ducks and just walk around. The larger of the two is Freedom Park, and it's an older but prettier park, but I just don't enjoy it there as much.

Enjoyed the new Special Edition of DRIVING MISS DAISY so much. Compared to the laserdisc, the DVD is very sharp, and the sound is much crisper and more distinct. I suspect they used some softer focus filters on the lenses for the earlier scenes to hide Tandy's age a bit because the film got sharper as it went along. Haven't had time to explore any of the special features, but I should be able to get to them tomorrow. Then, if there is time (going to a cookout tomorrow afternoon), I'll watch MYSTIC RIVER.

Oh, my aching belly!

Sushi at a picnic?  How is this possible?

The whole point of sushi is to start with incredibly fresh fish and to eat it as soon as it's cut, within a matter of minutes.

Now I'm trying to picture this, really I am.  Somebody with knives and cutting boards and those roll-the-roll mats accompanies you to the picnic.  But how does the fish stay fresh?  I'm assuming styrofoam coolers are your method of refrigeration.  Good enough for cook-out meats, sure, but uncooked fish?  Ew and double ew!
