Sequels?

I wrote a book about movie sequels once, ONE GOOD FILM DESERVES ANOTHER (1977), but it is long out-of-print.

The sky is blue and I am up, not necessarily in that order.  However, I only see one sky so I shan't sing Blue Skies.

TOD:

sequels that I thought were as good, or better, then the original:

REVENGE OF THE CREATURE (sequel to CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON)

WAR OF THE COLOSSAL BEAST: (sequel to THE AMAZING COLOSSAL MAN)

CURSE OF THE CAT PEOPLE (sequel to THE CAT PEOPLE)

SON OF KONG (sequel to KING KONG)

DHOOM 2 (sequel to DHOOM)

GHOST OF DRAGSTRIP HOLLOW (sequel to HOT ROD GANG)

sequels I didn't think too highly of:

All the sequels and prequels to STAR WARS.

PHIR HERA PHERI was a dud of a sequel to the hilarious HERA PHERI.

My favorite sequels?

Certainly THE GODFATHER, Part II has no equal and, although it has its problems, I also have a special affection for THE GODFATHER, Part II...mainly because it finishes a story that needed to be finished.

Beyond that, about the only sequels that I really like are the 2 BOURNE follow-ups and FRENCH CONNECTION II.

Okay, I'll confess.

I also enjoy SON OF FRANKENSTEIN and THE CREATURE WALKS AMONG US.

But, please don't tell anybody.

As for last night's "Heroes"....

Later that night, Leporello -- still believed by Elvira to be Don Giovanni -- is surprised by Anna, Ottavio, Zerlina and Masetto, who all denounce the supposed Don, despite Elvira's protests.  I like the show, but haven't followed it that closely over its first two season, but I do have to agree that the segments with Hiro - especially last night - were clumsy and even more logically unbelievable than the more happily illogical moments of the show.  I know the creators were trying to go for some slapstick, but when they totally throw out the danger element - and the peripheral vision and hearing! - of the people they were following, well...  Now, maybe this was set up early on, but does it look like that every "hero" will have a brother or sister or two?  When I first saw Chloe's character, I thought it was Kristen Bell dressed up as someone else.. And with the preview showing a prepped-up Skylar, well... And then we had the revelation of the twins being "created".  Anyhoo... Again, I may have some holes in my Heroes knowledge, but like DR Ron P, I am hoping that these first two episodes of this season are just part of a greater exposition that will lead to some pretty mind-blowing developments.  Fearing for his life, Leporello reveals his true identity and escapes.  Ottavio proclaims that he will take revenge on Giovanni and asks the others to look after Anna ("Il mio tesoro"). Elvira thinks about her betrayal by Giovanni, whom she still loves in spite of everything ("Mi tradi quell'alma ingrata").

Very sad.  Another police funeral here in Philly, today.  I can see all the attending forces gather for the funeral mass at the Basilica of St Peter and Paul across the street from our building.

It's the fourth funeral in less that a year's time for an officer killed in the line of duty, the third for an officer who was shot.

As for the Topic of the Day...

As for sequels that did not work...  The ones that come to mind right now are "Poltergeist 2" and "Poltergeist 3".  And even though the original films were not great works of art, I still find "Halloween" and "Friday the 13th" good for some good scares - especially "Halloween".  All their follow-ups were basically attempts to out-gross and out-sex the originals.

I can't think of any more sequels at the moment, to comment on...so for your delight here are ten reasons that Bollywood is better  when Helen is in the film !!

Just as a point of interest, Back To The Future wasn't meant to be a franchise or to have a sequel.  It was never in the filmmakers minds when they made the first film.  So I consider both of the subsequent films sequels, just as I consider any film in what is now called a "franchise" a sequel.  In other words, Jaws could have been a flop and it would have stopped there.  But it wasn't, hence sequels.

Yep. I've had it for weeks, but other TV box sets for September took precedence. I don't listen to the radio EVER.

My advice is to listen to at least a little of Car Talk (they have a website where the shows are archived) so that you have some context for the cartoon series, or else it's going to seem awfully outre.

SON OF FRANKENSTEIN

Rowland Lee, boomeranging from Frances Farmer to Frankenstein's monster.  Was he ever heard from again?  ;)

Are they really making a sequel to Cars?  I agree that it was the worst of the Pixar films and the only Pixar film I have no interest in ever watching again.

Favorite Sequel Never Made:

THE COLOR PURPLE GOES HAWAIIAN

The role of impoverished African-American women is further examined when Celie wins a trip to Honolulu and she takes along sister Nettie and Shug and Sofia (with Mister tagging along in a variety of disguises.)  Complications arise as Celie and Nettie become entangled with Nazi spies (thanks to Celie's plaid suitcase) and a native jungle tribe comes to believe that Miss Sofia is the reincarnation of their earth goddess.

Sequels that worked as well as the original:

Original:  "Beach Party"

Sequels:

"Beach Blanket Bingo"
"Bikini Beach"
"Muscle Beach Party"

Well, come to think of it, "Beach Party" is really the best of them, but the others are darn good.

...And then after their Hawaiian excursion, does Sofia end up settling down in Chicago, have a daughter - who happens to be named somewhat puzzlingly after one of the Marx Brothers...

Good Afternoon!

Well, I have to "work" this afternoon.  However, even though I will be sitting at a piano in an audition/rehearsal studio, it looks like I may not be "working" all that much.  But, it looks like I shall be entertained and entertaining nonetheless: Tom Stoppard and tap-dancing.  Hmmm...

WOW!!!

Yeah, DR Kerry, Wow!  As Paul Harvey would say, the rest of the story is that I have 30.08 years of Ohio public employment service credit that took me 35+ years to earn.

TOD:  Guilty Pleasure Sequels:

FUNNY LADY
AIRPORT '75
OMEN II
EXORCIST II
RETURN OF THE PINK PANTHER
The CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN follow-up with Myrna Loy--I can't think of the title at the mo'

BELLES ON THEIR TOES, which was also the title of the biographical sequel to CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN published by Crowell in 1950. I loved the two books as a kid.

Good Morning!

I'm up, I'm up... And, I have to say, it's been quite interesting and entertaining watching "The View" this morning.

How fascinating.  Amazing.  Wow!

In 3-5 days I will have new glasses! My new optometrist was a young man with an Italian last name who would have had DR MBarnum returning once a day for any exam he could imagine. I have no idea what became of the optometrist I saw last time.

I also had a good time at the NYPL and I'm back home to transfer what I learned to my computer filesvon BABES IN TOYLAND and LIFE BEGINS AT 8:40.

It's in the works, although what they'll do without ol' Doc Hudson is beyond me.

Toy Story 3 is also being made, but that at least will be answering the question: What happens to all the toys when Andy grows up?
