I have a question for Cillaliz:

Why isn't this first degree murder?

Edited: Never mind. I reread the story and understand it was to get him to enter a plea bargain.

Sometimes the shaken baby cases are hard to prove, sometimes not so much. It's really hard to say premeditated murder. He wanted the baby to be quiet, hard to say he wanted the baby to die.  But yes, the charges appear to have been reduced for the plea

Yours will ship as soon as the next batch of Murder At The Grove hardcovers arrive in a few days.

Patti is rather fierce on Rose's Turn - I liked it, but still like Merman and Lansbury better.  And, while I know that playoff music after the little post Rose's Turn scene is apparently included on a bonus disc at Barnes and Noble, the ending of this cast album proper is Rose's Turn - not my favorite way to end a Gypsy album especially when two seconds later we start in on the cut songs.  The two mother's day cut songs are bad - easy to see why they went.  Mamma's Talkin' Soft is a great song, and it was nice to hear how it was supposed to work (I recorded JUST the song, not its counterpoint to Small World).

I do prefer the orchestration and vocals on Lost In Boston III, but that's just because I'm used to them after all these years.  Also, the two songs really don't work in counterpoint - the counterpoint section has completely different music for Mamma's Talkin' Soft.  Interesting.

Thanks, Cillaliz. It seems a shame that the child's life seems to be less important than an older person's life.

Like Bernadette's Gypsy CD, not one I'll be playing a lot.  In fact, the only one of all the ones I have that I play repeatedly is the OBC, original CD pressing, not the redo.

OH!

So is anyone going to see "Mamma Mia! - The Sing-Along Edition" this weekend?

;)

Here in Olympia, a theater is showing the "Sing-Along Edition," starting tonight and playing every night through next Thursday!  I'd like to go sometime this weekend...maybe Monday, since it's Labor Day. :)

Why don't we all meet in front of the Ed Sullivan Theater (David Letterman's "home", 53rd and Broadway) at 10:00 and we shall proceed from there. -Most likely Popover or Sarabeth's on the UWS.

OK!    :D

And speaking of hunks and baritones...  Here's a "video" of Nathan Gunn and Kristin Chenoweth performing "It Feels Like Home" (from Nathan Gunn's last album).  -Alas, it's not my favorite rendition, nor arrangement of Bucchino's song - Nancy Lamott! - but at least Mr. Gunn is nice to look at.

It Feels Like Home with Kristin and Nathan

I didn't really like this version :-\ (although, I did enjoy looking at Nathan ;)).  I haven't listened to Nancy's version in long time, but I love Daisy Prince's version on the CD, Grateful: The Songs of John Bucchino.  I even got the songbook, and have performed the songs, "A Powerful Man" and "That Smile" (as a solo).

I have EYES WITHOUT A FACE on dvd, but haven't yet watched it. I am just not sure if it is something I would enjoy or not.

Of course I guess I won't know until I watch it.

Good Afternoon!

About a half hour ago, I left DR Ginny in the MoMA gift shop, while her DH Richard chose to remain in the sculpture garden reading (and napping).  It was another great afternoon at MoMA - and the line for the "Free Friday Nights" was already around the block by the time I left.  I hope Ginny and Richard made it out before that lobby became really(!) crowded.

The TV series :)

From NetFlix:

"Hitting the airwaves in 1958, "Wanted Dead or Alive" launched star Steve McQueen's career into the stratosphere. McQueen plays laconic bounty hunter Josh Randall, who packs a sawed-off Winchester shotgun as he tracks his criminal quarry throughout the Old West. Among the wagonload of bonus material are the six-part documentary Life in the Fast Lane, three featurettes, a McQueen biography and photo galleries."

I actually prefer Paul Wallace's rendition of "All I Need Is the Girl" on the GYPSY soundtrack. On the cast recording, his voice is a bit raspy from the exhaustion of opening a show. At any rate, his IS the definitive rendition of this great song. No other I have ever heard or seen is its equal.

bk - The current production of Gypsy and it's resulting OCR is different from the ones that have come before it.  Even Arthur Laurents admits to that.  I know that you - and many other people - love and "trust" Merman's original, but I think you also just have to sit back and listen to the new recording as a whole - and not comment from track to track.  It all works as a whole, not song by song, track by track.

Yes, you still may not like it, but at least give it a fair listen.

*And as far as the "weird tempos" are concerned, I have it on good authority that those were/are not the responsibility/"fault" of the conductor.  -And I believe I have made mention of some of the "interesting" tweaks that were instituted for the current revival - including changes from the original Encores!' production from last summer.

It's playing here as well, but I just received a HUGE shipment of discs that are going to keep me swamped for the rest of this month and the first half of September. Good night do I have a stack now!

One of DR Sandra's coworkers enjoyed the movie of "Mama Mia," so she took "Wing Sings ABBA" for him to enjoy as well.

At any rate, while I cooked and ate lunch, I watched the rest of that RITA documentary from TCM On Demand. Such a sad end, and all those marriages. Too bad she could never quite find what she was looking for.
