It sort of qualifies as a flop: Love Life (1948, Kurt Weill and Alan Jay Lerner) never had an OCR recorded, due to a strike of some sort, but ran 252 performances.  It seems to be mostly forgotten - that happens when cast recordings aren't made, apparently.  But with Nanette Fabray and choreography by Michael Kidd, it would have been fun to see.

Page Two Dance - something athletic by Michael Kidd, of course!

Today is the joint birthday party for the grandlads.  In preparation, the baked beans have been cooking away in the crock pot overnight, and the house reeks of them.

Reeks, I tell ya, reeks!

Dear BK:

If you cannot fit fifteen into your livingroom comfortably, just tell the ladies of the ensemble that lap dancing will help them get into their parts!

I've just discovered that one of the other musicals that debuted in 1948 was Kismet.

With competition like that, no wonder no one has heard of Love Life.  It was fate!

1948 was the Wright-Forrest flop MAGDALENA with john Raitt, Dorothy Sarnoff, and Irra Petina and a fantastic score; KISMET's 1951 or 1952 for Broadway, but it began in LA with Edwin Lester.

Speaking of LOVE LIFE, there are two live recordings circulating, a wonderful University of Michigan performance from the late 1980s and the BBC Radio broadcast of a 1990s production by Opera North. The show appears currently out of circulation because the Kurt Weill Edition is finally preparing a complete score for publication.

I stand corrected.

(Dang.  "It was fate" was a good line.)

Good morning!

Another scorcher here, too. They're calling for 95 (got to 96 yesterday), and it's just still and dead outside.

Yes, KISMET was later. It won the Best Musical Tony in 1954.

I'd loved to have seen TWO'S COMPANY. It's on the books as a flop because it had to close early due to Bette Davis' health (or boredom) issues. It had been selling out for three months prior to her having to leave the show and would no doubt have made a handsome profit if Davis had stayed with it.

I just read the weather report about the flash flooding in Central Indiana caused by 10 inches of rain this morning...

I'm sure I'll be watching an NCIS episode while I prepare and eat lunch, and I'll be finishing the bonus supplements on THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES today as well.

As for later this evening, I plan to watch a Blu-ray/HD-DVD, but I haven't selected it as yet.

I placed my first (big) order with Deep Discount last night. I hadn't been buying some very much desired box sets of TV shows (MURDER SHE WROTE 8, WILL & GRACE 7) and movies (FORBIDDEN HOLLYWOOD 2, BETTE DAVIS COLLECTION 3) in anticipation of this sale, so they are the first things I had on my list to order.

Flash flooding in Indiana and we haven't had a drop of rain in weeks. Mother Nature is absolutely fascinating!

I always thought TWO'S COMPANY was like JUBILEE and FADE OUT FADE IN: Mary Boland drops out and the show folds; Boland's problems were an alcoholic propensity and being unused to an 8-performance schedule after the liesurely Holywod schedule. I've always wondered how actually sick Davis and Burnett were.  Porter never forgave Boland for the JUBILEE closing; when she wrote her autobiography, he refused to write a back cover blurb for her.

Good morning, everyone.

Marvelous Matt is here. Anyone have a sense of deja vu yet? Yes, it's renovation time again at my house. We've had three MAJOR storms in the past month. One included a wind storm that damaged my roof. Matt is on the roof right now, despite The Heat and The Mugg, doing repairs. My roofer is expected during the coming week to do other repairs. The House Gods must be very annoyed with me indeed. Then there's all the damage inside.

I have Saturday chores to do, then Matt and I will put our heads together again and try to find affordable ways to deal with this. It's all doable, thankfully, but the $$$$ add up VERY quickly.

Much to do. Hope you all have a lovely (hot) day.

Magdalena's music, adapted from Villa-Lobos, is gorgeous.

BTW, I have a new TV.  :)

My favorite part was calling both the Ohio and California corporate offices of Funai to inform them they had broken Oregon state law by telling me I had to send the tv to California for repair.  ;)

Hmm... That's sort of like what I had to do last week when I had to call the Union office in order to "nudge" a certain "center" here in town to finally process an invoice I had submitted eight(!!!!) weeks ago.

-They even had the check - which included a late payment penalty - messengered over to my apartment.  How convenient! :)

Saturday morning greetings!  Just drove down to the PO to pick up our mail that was held while we were both away and our town is a mess from this week's storms.  There's even a whole tree uprooted in Sunset Park.

Straight plays?

I would have loved to have seen Paul Muni do INHERIT THE WIND.

BTW: I screwed-up yesterday.  It's THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES...not THE SEDGEWICK CHRONICLES.

Must've been a senior moment.  I seem to get a lot of them these days.

TOD - I would go back to the Mark Hellinger Theatre in late September 1982 to see DR PennyO in her beautiful costumes in A Doll's Life.

The flop musical I did get to see was The Grass Harp, pre-Broadway, when it was performed at the gala opening night of The Power Center for the Performing Arts at The University of Michigan.

Very groggy, though.  I have to highlight stage directions for act two, but if I do it while my eyes are groggy heaven knows WHAT I'll highlight.

Walter WInchell accused her of sloughing off the show, and Davis presented him with her doctor's diagnosis of osteomyelitis of the jaw after the producction closed.

Jose - do you think that ever in practice costs you future work, I mean, if you have  aunion person "nudge" somebody?

No.  -Especially, since in this case, there's been a history of delayed and late payments, in general - not just with me.

First and foremost, the gig was/is a Union gig.  Subsequently, all parties involved are required to follow the Union rules.  It's a black and white, contract issue - not a personal or personnel issue.  If I ever suspected that my work was being curtailed due to my "nudge", then I'm sure that that would be quite easy to prove.

Additionally, I am hired for work through a different office(s), but have to submit the invoice to the producer in order to get paid.  I'm truly a middle-man.  I was also not the only one who had to resort to a "nudge" lately from what I understand.

-If I had "nudged" after just two weeks, well, that would have been a totally different story.  Alas, after eight weeks, I think a "nudge" was totally appropriate and not uncalled for.
