I have no idea if the novel is coming along quite nicely - certainly it's coming along, and it seems fine to me and I'm having a good time with it, although it does have its difficult aspects to it.  I'm just hoping that my muse Margaret keeps enjoying it and thinking it works.

One of the best ways to introduce youngsters to the classics is to have a good narrator that can introduce "programatic" classics and guide their listening. (The Moldau and Pictures at an Exhibition make a good starting point.) Their parents never play music at home or in the car, and insist that the kids wear headphones when they lisiten to their CDs (even at home) so there is never a "community" sharing of the music. Kids are great sponges, but you do have to make an effort to dip them in the water!

der Brucer

Yes, but fortunately kids can learn from people other than their parents. My parents weren't music lovers and seldom listened to it, but how I loved both Lena Horne and Ella Fitzgerald when they were on TV!

Surely you know Benjamin Britton's Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra? I've always loved it. I've never heard it in concert, but it comes around from time to time.

Are there any sites geared to music for kids? Wouldn't that be nice? Think of what you could do! Free to everyone! I get excited just thinking about it. EDISAURUS, do you know anything about this? Or VIXMOM?

But surely (I know, stop calling you shirley) the first step is the getting it down on paper. always easier to rewrite than write. I suspect that at this point you have a pretty good idea of what is working. i think you found your voice in Dirty Book.

As for nick and aj (and the comments DR RonP made). I personally don't remember seeing them featured in the audition shows. Maybe they were shown in their original auditions. But their stories were not memorable i really don't remember any focus on them.  Also they may have been shown during groups week. But if they were they were not the focus of the group.

Your not remembering them does not equate to their not being featured "as substantially" as any of the others.  I suspect you remembered who you liked.

Also, this not remembering them does not validate the theory you said was proved by last night's evictions..  Half the evictees last night were featured "as much as" anyone else I can recall.

And you are correct about Sanjaya....he wasn't featured during Hollywood week at all...except at the end when he had to let his sister know he made it to finals.  Again...NO EXPOSURE of any significance for Sanjaya except that he is memorable for walking in with his sister, auditioning for the fun of it (SHE was the one they went to auditions for), and for having Simon tell him he was better than she was.

I didn't think much of either of them, but I remember them.  And I remember more attention being given to Nick and A.J., as well.  And to the guy who left last week...Paul Kim.

As for folks who were the focus of their groups, many of those folks were rejected.

Of those remaining in the competition after last night, Lakisha, Melinda, Gina, Stepanie, Jordin, Sundance, Blake, both Chris's, Jared and Phil are equally prominent in my memories from the auditions/Hollyood segments.  I remember at least the auditions of most of them, and significantly more information on several who have been voted out.

That is all.

This seems to be a browser problem - let me guess - you're viewing the e-mail through Internet Explorer or Outlook Express.  I've had two people tell me of this problem - but it's not a problem on any browser I use.

Surely you know Benjamin Britton's Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra?

Shouldn't I avoid exposing youngsters to music written by "one of those people"? (Boy, would that make a list of classics shorter!!!)

PS It's Britten with an "e".

I don't know nothin'.  I just write, then I rewrite as I go - sometimes over and over until I feel it's right, because I simply cannot move on if I'm not happy with what I've done.  There is no "later" with me - I fix it first, then move on.

I have written close to four pages today and am happily one page into a new chapter.  I was having trouble coming up with something grabby for the first line, and I finally found it and the rest of the page just flew into place like a gazelle sucking on a water hose.

Well, you know Larry - the strong, silent type - no talk, all action!

Speaking of action, I have been enjoying reading all about your misspelled namesake:

Karrin Murphy - The perky, feisty, kick-ass Chicago Police Detective in Jim Butcher's "Dresden Files" books.

Speaking of the new guy, you all have been all over him like a duck on a June bug today (Texanese for "pounce").  But your newbie hazing didn't frighten him, so looks like he's a keeper..

Welcome, DR Singdaw to the "wacky, zany and wildly entertaining" world of HHW (I'm recycling that quote from my Brain review, but it fits, so that's okay -- DR Jeanne said she was kidding, but all newbie's first pledging ritual is to buy and then post a review of The Brain From Planet X on amazon.com and CD Baby, so when you get that done, let me know then I'll sign off on your pledge manual) ....

Hey, except for spelling Karen wrong (where the hell did Jim come up with Karrin? -- must be a typo) and the Chicago part -- the rest fits me to a "T." ...(Well, I'm not really a police detective, I just play like one sometimes...you know, when the ol' man likes to play "The Leprechaun and the Lady Cop" sometimes  ;) ;))...

Hey, Newbie Singdaw ~ They like you, they really like you.  No one ever told me what DR meant.  It took me several days as a newbie to figure it out -- ON  MY OWN -- hurrump!

(I'm married to a tiny, little leprechaun -- that's him in my avatar -- ain't he cute? -- who's a doctor, so DR means doctor to me -- so I was saying to myself "Damn what's with this website and all these doctors?!"  I figured it out when I saw "DR ELmo" and thought "He's no doctor!")
