My dad is starting to show an awareness of what Jo Ann believes he said were angels.  Maddie, the beautiful German shepherd, sleeps on the bed beside his hospice bed and occasionally moves into his bed to lick him or nuzzle him.  The other shepherd Max comes and goes.

The predicted storm has sent Jo to market, and I need to go to the post office this morning.  I don't plan on doing much else besides the work I've brought with me.  I will call friends in the area, including DR Ginny, but until this is over, I plan to stay close to my dad.

TOD:  What a great period of song writing!  I don't have the presence of mind to focus on it at the moment.

Good morning!

We have another of those "white sky" mornings. It's not especially cold, but the total cloud cover makes it seem rather oppressive.

There are hundreds of songs of the 40s which I love and could write about, but the first one that came to my mind when I read that was

"Chattanooga Choo Choo" by Glenn Miller and his orchestra along with the Dorothy Dandridge version. I have that entire long version on a Glenn Miller CD, and when I come to it, I almost always put it on repeat and just play that track over and over. I LOVE that song and that elaborate rendition.

I'll have last night's CROSSING JORDAN along with HBO's ROME and EXTRAS to enjoy today. Don't know if I'll get to take Charlie Chan to the Olympics or not today.

Tonight, of course, as we're in the midst of sweeps, we've got new episodes of the CBS comedies, the NBC dramas (including HEROES) and two hours of '24.'

DR George, I got my shipping notice this morning from Amazon saying that A SHOCK TO THE SYSTEM had shipped this morning. Thus, I hope to have it on WEdnesday (if luck is with me) or by Friday otherwise. Very excited to get it.

DR ELMORE,
I am so glad that you are able to post on HHW during this trying time. I know you have many friends here at HHW who care about you and who are thinking of you and welcome the updates. I have no doubt that this site gives you strength as well.

I think that you have done the most important thing: you sat down with your dad, held his hand, and told him you love him. Having been through my own father's death, I think that is the bottom line. Not everyone has the opportunity--or takes the opportunity--to do that.

My very best wishes for the coming days and weeks. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Lar,

I can only say what others have said. Love and good wishes to you in this difficult time. My father had similar experiences with seeing "angels" or "the light" during his last days. I, too, believe my father hung on until I returned to Minnesota from New York. I arrived on Monday and he left on Wednesday but on Monday he knew I had arrived. It was then alright for him to leave.

I hope, as DR Laura says, that your dad's passing comes quickly and painlessly.

TOD:
I'm sure I have many favorites from the '40's, but don't have a good feel for which songs were from that era.

Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B
Chattanooga Choo Choo
That Old Black Magic
Accentuate the Positive
Baby, It's Cold Outside
My Foolish Heart
Bye Bye Blackbird (1940's?)
The Birth of the Blues
Don't Get Around Much Anymore
Satin Doll
Sunny Side of the Street
Mack the Knife
My Funny Valentine (one of my all-time favorites)
Blue Moon
The Lady is a Tramp
Begin the Beguine
A Lot of Livin' To Do

Much of the Big Band music

My guess is that many of the song that Sammy Davis Jr and Frank Sinatra were singing in the '50's and '60's were actually from the '40's.

Corrections welcome!

The other day I mentioned the BBC production of TIPPING THE VELVET. I keep thinking about it and appreciating it even more. It's clearly not a one-timer for me. This story has depth and staying power, and it's the sort of production that catches my attention and admiration, even on the first viewing. It's one of those shows you don't hear much about, but deserves recognition. I recommend it.

DR SANDRA,
I was just listening to Sammy Davis Jr sing CANDYMAN, and right there in the lyrics were the words "You can even eat the dishes"! Of course I thought of you. DR FJL may have recalled these lyrics, but I'd forgotten them.

Just thought you should know. :)

As usual for Monday, I'm having lunch with best friend John, so I need to head down now and get cleaned up. He also implored me to watch EXTRAS before lunch so we could talk about it, so, hello, I must be going (a Groucho reference).

Also for DR SANDRA:
I, too, like saddle shoes. Several years ago I bought a pair of tan suede saddle shoes at Nordstrom. The salesman, a man I've purchased shoes from many times and know to be one of those very upbeat, could-sell-sand-in-a-desert sorts, referred to them as "homely." Homely! They are most comfortable and I like them very much.

You and I can be frumps together. :)
(I know you could never be a frump.)

Here at work, I have a lunchtime program planned for Wednesday.  I've begun to receive emails and phone calls asking if we're still going to have it, what with the weather forecast.  We've yet to see a drop of any kind of precipitation and the predictions are still very iffy, so how can I make a call 48 hours in advance?  What I can do is be sure to have contact info for the speaker and the people who've bothered to register in advance with me when I leave work tonight.

JRand - Re your comments on Austin Miller :)  :)  :)

Of course, there are no stakes in speculating, but I do think this guy has it in him to be a real stage star if he's lucky in the roles he does.    I don't think he's the greatest Danny Zuko, but he's got somthing special.

Maybe Albert in Bye Bye Birdie.  (?)

CILLALIZ,
when I read your posts about your upcoming switch to a solo practice I can hear your excitement and maybe a little bit of anxiety. It's very exciting. (I'd certainly have some anxiety.) In fact, it is QUITE WONDERFUL. I love to see people have the courage to make significant changes in mid-career/mid-life. You are so positive about it; I have no doubt it will all just fall together.
