It's so warm out today!

You'd be amazed at how COLD it is today in Oakland, then.  It's currently a breezy F 43 degrees.

This is the weather I expected to find during my trip to South Carolina last month.  Instead I found the "White Christmas" weather Bing and Danny found when they arrived in Vermont.

Media Check

DVD:  I finally cracked open the SNL SEASON ONE set and guess what?--there was a disc missing!  Now I have to get it to my sister who will have to return it to Amazon and that will take forever!  I was so looking forward to viewing this set.  Darn it!

I had problems with the I LOVE LUCY season two box set, and AMAZON replaced it quickly.  You can print out a return label with postage from their site - they give you a password and all.  ;)

Sorry I never got back to you on this.  Of course I didn't win.

I guess it's not wise to mess with potions and spells for "personal gain."

From now on, I'm just going to pray to Lady Luck to smile upon me.

MBarnum's post above about his favorite title reminded me, indirectly, of the worst thing I ever heard someone say in a group of people.

I'm not sure I should actually post it, but perhaps it will spur a reminiscence or two of the worst thing you ever heard anyone say in a public place (or in private, for that matter).

WARNING:  Apply a Raunch Factor of 5 to the following, 5 being the highest factor number.

I taught military journalism at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana, from 1979-1984.

All the military services had their Public Affairs personnel trained at the Defense Information School (now located in Maryland) -- or, DINFOS, as it is known.

Each of my classes was made up of Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps students, most of whom were ages 18-22.

I recall during one class period, circa 1980, I was explaining to my class (I had an average of 18-20 students at a time) that each branch of service had its own unique ways of doing things.   The class I taught was to prepare them to work on a base newspaper.

We talked about various base papers that were well-known and representative of diverse local military and civilian audiences.

One student said he hoped he'd be assigned to some base or other, so asked him why.  He gave an answer.  Another student did the same.  And another and another, etc.

Finally, one of my Navy women (who was 19, funny and a bit of a plain jane) said she wanted to be assigned to the paper in Rota, Spain.  When I asked why she said, "They have a Marine Barracks there.  I want to find a Marine and spend my tour sitting on his face."

I had to give the class a break after the laughter died down.

Still....it was a pretty awful thing to say in a group of people, even if she was being honest.

You could always get a job as a cat groomer, or cat sitter.

Some folks here in the Bay Area make a fine living being cat sitters....folks hire them to come to their homes while they are away...and to clean the litter daily, feed the cat(s) twice a day...and to sit and play with the cat(s) for a half-hour or so.

Kennels can be as expensive as $60-$80 a day, depending on what needs your animal has.  A cat sitter can probably get a following charging $25 per animal...which might include administering medications or shots for cats with special needs/diabetes.  You might even have to administer saline under the skin.

BUT you can charge extra for that skill.

This must be a busy Friday for most folks.

There's a dearth of participation this morning.

Oh, yes, a dearth!

Yes, they were good, too.  These coffee-flavored ones are amazing.  The package says a serving=9.  I tell ya, if I ate 9 of these at once you'd have to scrape me off the ceiling.

Airborne!

I'm telling you, folks around me are dropping like flies in a cloud of DDT.

A bunch of people are out sick today who weren't sick yesterday.

And folks who are here are complaining of getting sick before a weekend.

I'm swilling Airborne at least twice a day and it seems to be working just fine in keeping me away from a cold or flu.

Was there one other Limited Edition?  Something like Candy Cane or Peppermint?

From a local newspaper:

Sausage Man

"George Johnson of Richmond, Calif., who died recently at 112, not only defied the actuarial tables but did so on a diet of mostly sausages and waffles.  Despite his high-calorie, fat-laden food choices, Johnson's autopy revealed that the World War I veteran had the organs of someone in his 50s or 60s."

I wonder if substituting grits for waffles would work as well!

The sun is shining brightly here today.  The sky is a light blue (still a bit of high marine layer).

Things are moving rather slowly, too.  Even the occasional "crisis" lacks the hysteria that would have been the norm a week before Christmas.
