'Dreamgirls' Snubbed by National Board of Review
The National Board of Review doesn't like "Dreamgirls," the odds-on favorite film to win the next Academy Award for Best Picture.

The fan-based group, which screens films to members who pay a $500 a year fee, snubbed the musical entirely. They chose Clint Eastwood's "Iwo Jima," a three-hour movie spoken in Japanese and distributed by Warner Bros., as their Best Picture.

The rest of the NBR's choices are not unexpected but nevertheless interesting. They also chose Eastwood's "Flags of Our Fathers" as one of their 10 best films, keeping with their slavish devotion not only to the actor-director but also to Warner's, which has international rights to the film.

NBR also chose Warner's releases "The Painted Veil," "Blood Diamond" and "The Departed." They rounded out their list with "Babel" and four films from 20th Century Fox: "The Devil Wears Prada," "Notes on a Scandal," "The History Boys" and "Little Miss Sunshine."
In choosing this group, the NBR will have to answer a lot of questions. It completely omitted films from New Line ("Little Children," "Prairie Home Companion"), Universal ("The Good Shepherd," "Catch a Fire"), Weinstein Company ("Bobby," "Miss Potter"), Sony ("Volver," "Marie Antoinette," "Stranger Than Fiction) and Miramax/Disney ("The Queen," "Venus").

There's going to be an outcry now like you can't believe.

Let the outcry begin!

Thanks to everyone for the Credit Card vibes. Tomorrow I will dispute the charges when they become transactions NOT pending. I have talked to both vendors and those charges won't go through....or whatever they do. MasterCard can take care of the rest.

I did make a police report and get a number, so I will check on the progress next week. My guess is NOTHING will happen.

Watching Stanley Donen....nice interview.

I watched SUPERMAN RETURNS last night, and I thought the cast was very good. I liked Spacey and Posey as Lex and Kitty MUCH better than Hackman and Perrine (useless). Brandon Routh (as Mr BK wrote) was channeling Mr Christopher Reeve for much of the film...he was charming. I thought Kate Bosworth was very Phyllis-Coates-ish...and Mr BK's landlord James Marsden was also fun.

All in all I enjoyed the movie very MUCH!!!

So I picked up the Kitty and got an instant "motor running" - the dogs were watching through the window and set up a horrendous howl! Kitty hopped down, and trotted next door.

I have packed and am now getting ready to go nighty night so that I can get up ultra early in the morning for the airplane ride to LAX. Actually the plane doesn't leave until 9:30 am but my buddy Mark's partner James is taking me there at 6 am as he must be at work by 7 am.

Had a chance to watch much of what had been recorded. I began with last night's nip/tuck. Interesting episode until a completely out of the blue ending involving Jacqueline Bisset. It didn't ring true for me at all.

An example of the above: A few days ago, TPunk and I were over at Ben and Ant's and Ant had a Broadway theatre guide from 1925. I went down the whole list of like 40 Broadway theaters that existed at that time, and Ben knew the current or previous location and history of every venue, often the year of destruction, the name changes, everything. It was fantastically impressive!

Next came last Thursday's MY NAME IS EARL. In it, Earl tried to help a gay acquaintance who wanted to become more like Earl (but stay gay). This led to some funny adventures as Earl fell back into the gambling habit.

And the whole show set up this week's special one hour episode.

The Stanley Donen interview was just fine, but as is so often the case, fans and movie historians often know more technical information about a person's career than they do. When Osborne mentioned 1949 being a pivotal year in his career, Donen responded, "Why? What happened that year?" These folks were too busy living life and having careers than they were documenting every move they were making.

I remember Katharine Hepburn saying once that she didn't know when the 1930s ended and the 1940s began as far as her career was concerned. She just continued working every minute she could and didn't pay attention to dates.

DAY BREAK continued being a fun experience as the Taye Diggs character continues unraveling the pieces of his day so he can solve the murder that's being pinned on him. He got two vital pieces of info in tonight's episode. Should be interesting to see how they help him next week when he relives the day one or two more times.

Good evening. I've been listening to a seminar, of all things. The NACDL is now selling the entire year of seminars on CD including lectures and materials for a quite reasonable price. I wasn't going to get them, but found tonight that it was quite inspiring....so, I'm actually looking forward to listening to them. Good for car trips

MEDIUM was a more subdued episode this week. Not as frantic as some weeks as Allison puts the information together to get to the truth of a story, but I enjoyed it for its change of tempo this week.
