Every Halloween, I sing When the Night Wind Howls from Ruddigore.  (It's a send-up on Shubert lieder.)

I thought this a very good radio show.  As usual, I'm struck by how the more recent musicals aren't as good as the selections from the older ones.

Where was the Halloween ballet from A Tree Grows In Brooklyn?  An Tom Lehrer's Irish Ballad from Tom Foolery is ever so much scarier than many of those ghost numbers.

NEW SHOW!
Since I will be out of town all weekend, I am launching the new Broadway Radio Show this morning instead of Sunday afternoon.

Enjoy!

Some time ago, the board was talking about Jule Styne and it was mentioned how he'd recycle a tune from an earlier show, with a new lyric, to go in a new one.

Hearing this week's radio show reminds me that Dance a Little Closer's melody had previously been used by Charles Strouse for a song (with lyrics by Lee Adams) in the London production of Golden Boy.  I think it's called What Became of Me?

That's a wonderful If I Were a Bell identified as being form the Motown recording of Guys and Dolls.  My old friend Bill Goldstein produced that album, which is of a Broadway revival from the 1970's featuring an all-black cast.  Michael's comments are apt: after THAT many dolce de leches, Sarah should be very loose when she sings the song.  As the wonderful Ernestine Jackson is.  I met her earlier this year at a little show we were both part of at the Algonquin.

On this week's show Donald and I lament the lack of discussion of the radio show on these here boards, so in an attempt to remedy that sad, sad situation, I am posting this rather self-referential post to stimulate the discussion.

Come on, folks, these covers must provoke some sort of reaction?!  And if Yoko Ono singing showtunes doesn't, I'll be forced to dip deeper into my well of awfulness and break out the Kathy Lee on the next installment!

Having just heard the Barry Sisters do Fiddler on the Roof, I know just how deep that well goes.  Now, did Patty Duke sing showtunes?
