Well, you've read the notes, the notes were neither erotic nor thrilling, and now it is time for you to post until the erotic cows come home.

And the word of the day is: FORTUNE!

Almost bed time. I just spent almost two HOURS trying to figure out a location. Someone on one of the LA Facebook groups, Lost Angeles, posted a photo making the rounds of all those groups - Hedy Lamarr sitting in a car in a drive-in restaurant. Impossible to tell which. IMPOSSIBLE. The only clew is the building you can see in back of her - Beverly Motor Company, and a Pontiac sign. The only drive-in in Beverly Hills (that's how the photo is identified - 1941 Beverly Hills - was Carpenter's on Wilshire and Le Doux, which became Dolores. But there was no auto dealer next to it.
-
Then I began to think maybe it was Beverly Blvd. - many drive-ins on Beverly Blvd. in the 1940s, but none of the photos I found looked right. I could find zero on Beverly Motor Company at all, until I did a deeper dive and found a single reference to it on Google in a newspaper classified section from the 1940s - the actual site with that classified is impossible to decipher, but in the Google description it had an address - 9744 Wilshire Blvd. I Googled it and of course you can't tell what was there because all those buildings vanished long ago - near the corner of Wilshire and Linden. No way to really confirm it unless - UNLESS - one could find a drive-in at that location. IMPOSSIBLE. Nothing at all, but I kept on digging and digging and finally hit paydirt - one single mention and one photo in a book called Early Beverly Hills, which I actually own. In it, a photo of Simon's Drive-In, located at the corner of - Wilshire and Linden.
-
I thought I almost had it, only I could find not proof there was a Simon's there. I had locations for a ton of Simon's Drive-Ins and the closest was Wilshire and Fairfax, where now Johnie's sits across from the May Company. That was the only one I could find on Wilshire. Then I searched Simon's locations.
-
Again, nothing came up at all, just the locations I'd already seen, but nothing in Beverly Hills. Then I found a Simon's menu on eBay. And there, on the back, was a list of Simon's Drive-Ins in 1940, including - Wilshire and Linden. BK, the detective, scores again.

TOD question: When you have just one sip of champagne for the New Year, do other people drink the rest of the bottle?

With the McRib mention in the Notes:
I had the McRib again yesterday. It was very very good. Having a bite of the slivered onions with the bites of the McRib was so much better than the bites without the onions.
-
They keep saying the McRib is for a Limited Time Only, though.

I am out of my muscl;e relaxers and painkillers, and I cannot requet prescription refills until January. 2 because I have no money until then. So . . . last night I took to Advil PM to knock myself out. I was feeling unconscious by 8:30, so I went to bed, slept rather well, although by 2:30 my leg pains were worsening. Around 6:00 the alarm reanf and I turned it off. I finally decided to get out of bed around 7:45. I'm a little groggy, but we're all fed and Miss Annabelle seems happy sleeping next to me on my teacart.
-
I am estimating that 75% of my iTunes stll exists on my hard drive to be reloaded back to my iTunes, and at the rate it's taking me, judging by yesterday's work, I suspect it will take me 3-4 months before everything is cleaned up, reloaded, or trashed. This is ridiculous.
-
Good morning.

DR MichaelG, I listened carefully to both Lawrence recordings several times. I also worked for the Ira Gershwin estate on several projects, including assisting Michael Tilson Thomas on the Gershwin Centennial Celebration at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, a production of Strike Up the Band, directed by a jerk Gary Davis in Pasadena, 1988 (I think) and a revival of Oh, Kay! at Goodspeed, either before or after - who remembers now? - that Pasadena production.
Until I was unceremoniously sacked by another jerk and supposed friend in a 1991 power struggle inside Roxbury Recordings, I had been the primary editor of the first recording Girl Crazy. My last project with the Gershwins and Library of Congress, Life Begins at 8:40, was equally disastrous.
-
I could have run across rthe lyrics anywhere between 1984 and 1991.
-
Good morning.
Hello, DR Laura!
-
Good morning
-
I did not attend church this morning
-
The sneezing seems to have stopped but I’m still feeling achey
-
And very very tired despite sleeping nearly 12 hours last night
-
Good morning.
Hello, DR Laura!
(waves)
-
DR singdaw your question from yesterday is now moot.
I might take a temporary leave from the state, however.
-
I did not attend church this morning
Same. Well, it hasn't started yet, but I'm staying home. I'm fine. But I'm afraid I may be contagious before symptoms hit.
-
I guess I could watch it on Zoom. Maybe I will.
-
Good morning, all.
-
And a late one it is, even for me on a Sunday.
I got up at some pre-dawn hour to visit the necessary, and laid awake for a little bit before falling back to sleep. That enabled me to sleep in more than I normally would. I needed that.
-
Last night I plopped into bed and turned on TCM again because there was something starting at 10:30 that I would have watched at least part way through if I were awake enough. I have no memory now of what that was to be, and indeed I was conked out before it even started. Oddly, I just looked at their online schedule, and my browsers won't bring up anything in the overnight hours. It's as though their schedule page isn't working for that period up to about 6:00 a.m. this morning. Well, it hardly matters.

Congrats to BK on the research success with the drive-in in that photo. That is what it takes sometimes.

So I hear.

Yesterday I listened to the third in my series of Nutcracker complete ballet recordings. This one was my reel-to-reel copy of Ansermet conducting the Suisse Romande.
I had once held this as my go-to version, but that was then and this is now. It's not BAD, it's certainly generally okay, but for me, nowadays, Dorati and Irving are in the lead for their clean and incisive readings. Also, and I would be horrified to say this if I still valued it, but it sounded like this tape copy is beginning to deteriorate -- something I'm very happy to say is not the case with the other tapes I own. I know I need to clean and demagnetize the tape heads on my machine, and that will be done before I play another tape, but I think this was the tape itself. I'll check it after that, and give it the toss if necessary. Hell, I should do that, anyway, in the spirit of letting things go that do not continue to bring something positive to the table.

DR elmore3003: this seems too wacky to be true, but you wouldn't lose anything by trying it:
Some people say that sleeping with a bar of soap under your sheets can stop your leg cramps at night. It is believed that the soap sends tiny ions into your body, making their way to your nerves and calming cramps.

Happy Sunday everyone... it's that time of year! Time for me to reveal my Top Ten Cast Recordings of 2024 on the new episode of the Broadway Radio Show...
http://www.haineshisway.com/the-broadway-radio-show-2/
-
Yes DR ELMORE my mother swore by a bar of soap under the sheets.
-
I watched both COMING HOME and THE LAST DETAIL and liked them both a lot. I had only seen parts of either film.
-
I also enjoyed reading about the solution of the mystery in the notes.
Research is interesting but it is very time consuming to be sure.
-
I went to church this morning. Pastor took the Sunday off, but videotaped his sermon.
-
Then I came home and slept. I am still not used to The decongestant’s effects on my body, except for the relief of not sneezing all the time.
-
I watched both COMING HOME and THE LAST DETAIL and liked them both a lot. I had only seen parts of either film.
Good Hal Ashby movies both, but I prefer Being There, Harold and Maude, and Shampoo.
-
Laura, did you see the recipe ideas last night? I’m not overly fond of eggplant, but I really enjoyed making those boats. So much I made them a couple of times when life handed me eggplants.
-
I used a different ground meat each time, hamburger, sausage. You could use ground turkey or shredded chicken.
-
Onward!

And since we are now into the twelve days of Christmas on the calendar, here we are:

That was nice DR ELMORE.
-
It's my opinion that too many of these "erotic" thrillers are nothing but "erratic" thrillers, and stinky to boot.
-
DR JOHN G.....yes....
My brother and I went to the drive in on a Sunday night and saw The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean......the second feature was Harold & Maude.
I went back every night by myself for the next four days to see the double feature.....just to see H/M.
So you know what my favorite Ashby film is...to this day. The music by Cat Stevens was so good.....and you had to buy a couple of albums to get all of the songs. And Barbara Parkins in her VOD commentary talked about her love affair with Cat and how his spirituality broke them up.....although she claimed they were still in touch and in synch.....so to speak.
-

Thanks, DR elmore3003. I saw your credit on Girl Crazy but didn't know about your work on Oh, Kay! But it doesn't surprise me in the least that you were involved there, or that your ears are better than mine for this type of thing!

Watching Mauvaise Graine (The Bad Seed), Wilder’s first film. It’s about a spoiled brat who becomes a car thief after his father cuts off his spending. Some great Wilder touches. The couple are already in separate beds when they meet. But you know where they’ll wind up.
-

Then I came home and slept. I am still not used to The decongestant’s effects on my body, except for the relief of not sneezing all the time.
From one who sneezes a lot, that seems pretty good to me. I admit, I wouldn't trade not sneezing for that feeling of being drugged.
-
Laura, did you see the recipe ideas last night? I’m not overly fond of eggplant, but I really enjoyed making those boats. So much I made them a couple of times when life handed me eggplants.
They were excellent suggestions. The eggplant boats look fun. Years ago, when we still liked zucchini, I used to make stuffed zucchini and stuffed eggplants.

Keith said the same thing when I showed it to him. Temptation to buy it is gone. I say "just one more chapter" all the time when I am reading.
-
One thing I like about reading on Libby is that it tells me how many pages are left in a chapter. Kindle sometimes tells me how many minutes are left. I prefer knowing the page number.
-
There was a time when I might have worn this shirt, though we simply created more shelves when needed.

Laura, did you see the recipe ideas last night? I’m not overly fond of eggplant, but I really enjoyed making those boats. So much I made them a couple of times when life handed me eggplants.
Thanks, John. I guess I didn't go back far enough when I was catching up this morning. Those sound good. I'll try them this week.
-
I didn't zoom into the church service today. I went for a walk, instead.
-
I picked up some canned tomatoes for salsa for my salads. In addition to cutting out carbs, I think I'm going to have to cut down on fat, as well.
-
So, salsa for what I call my Big Ass Salads this week.
-
Instead of salad dressing with mayo or oil.
-
The vegan friend took all the rest of the eggplants. But we get them fairly often. I'll try the boats then.
-
I kept two bunches of cilantro, so I have enough for the cucumber salad and the tabouli.
-
Last one because I love books & hearts.

DR JANE nice t shirt but yes.....the "d" is most unfortunate.

It would be a best seller every January, John.
-
Every time the power went out the back up battery on Keith's computer set off an alarm and it had to be re-set. The last time we were away the alarm scared our neighbor/friend when she walked in to check on our place. Fortunately her husband was home to come find and the source of the alarm and unplug it.
-
MOST TALKATIVE!
-
Today we took the battery to Best Buy to recycle it and purchased a proper battery protector.
-
JRand, it's usually two or three boxes of produce. And usually pretty large quantities of each item. Sometimes it is old stuff and it gets tossed. But usually it's usable. I share it with my next-door neighbors and my vegan friend.

DR LAURA I am still trying to wrap my head around the idea of a vegetable box.

Both can be changed to the percentage read vs pages. I always do that. Often I like to see how many pages are in the chapter to know if I have time to complete it.

My back gets so tired in this damn chair. Trying to find a new one that I do NOT have to assemble.
Good luck with that.
-
Jane, more vibes that your foot feels better!
-
I really must go find a movie to watch.
-
And yet, I keep sitting in the uncomfortable chair.
-
I know not why.
-
Oh dear.
-
Jane, more vibes that your foot feels better!
Thank you.
-
I must energizer.
-
I do feel that page eight is waiting in the wings.
-
See?
-
There was a time when I might have worn this shirt, though we simply created more shelves when needed.

You do what'cha gotta do! Although, this is me and my cast recordings. ;)
I can image cast recordings is the same, though they take up less space than most books.
True, very true.

I wouldn't want to win that much at once.
You can spread it out or set up a trust. I believe there are multiple options.
Multiple options are nice.

So are you convinced? If you win the lottery for a billion dollars, will you accept it?

LOL. Now he is convinced he can accept it, and handle the money wisely ;)

Since those t-shirts were on a Facebook site I looked up reviews and read it might be spam.
-
1.2 BILLION dollars.
That's ridiculous. It's just too much money all at once for one person to truly comprehend. :-\
Don't worry - if you want it all at once, it's only $567 million. If you want the $1.2 billion, it gets paid out over 30 years.
My sister-in-law will redeem my ticket and Venmo me the winnings

The characters here are deplorable.

The London Underground. In cross stitch.

I did this in my spare time. :)

An alternative to the bouche de noel:
Can I challenge Laura to make this?
-
Wow!
Yes, and, according to Cher, Desi went after her.
-
I’m up to the last story in this movie. There’s an hour left and I just don’t care.
-
I may stream another Billy Wilder.
-
Good night, friends.
-
And others.
-
What does everyone think of Avanti?
-
It’s one Wilder I haven’t seen yet.

An alternative to the bouche de noel:

I hope you will! :)

Let’s get off this page.

Nine!

Good night, Singdaw.

Wow!
That's so interesting!

That's interesting, too!

Watched a really fun interview with Woody Allen done by Julian Schlossberg, who was a big Nudie Musical fan. Interestingly, Take the Money and Run played the 68th Street Playhouse forever when it came out - which is where we played for three months.
-
Schlossberg is really a nice guy - I met with him back in the early 2000s when I was thinking about doing the Meltz and Ernest faux documentary.
-
BTW, if you don't know about the new coffee table book, Broadway Poster Art, by the guy who owns Triton Galleries, it's a must-have.
-
MR BK I suggest that you visit your local Thrift stores where bar stools will be assembled and you can try them out before you buy....at a good price.
-
Good night, all.

I would most likely split it with my niece. She's the youngest on our side of the family and eventually would get it, anyway.

Well, it turns out that Jimmy Carter wasn't the only famous person to die today:
Linda Lavin Dies: ‘Alice’ Star & Tony-Winning Broadway Actor Was 87 (https://deadline.com/2024/12/linda-lavin-dead-alice-no-good-deed-tony-winner-1236243483/)
:(
-
Hadn't heard about Carter. I really liked Linda Lavin. I'll tell the funny story of when I chatted with her in Joe Allen when we were in NY doing the Kritzerland show.
-
Finished with my viewing.
-
I was surprised how much I liked the movie.
-
It's always a nice surprise to enjoy a newer movie, this one released this year, I think.
-
I think I'll have a little kugel.
-
A Little Kugel - that's the title of my next novel.
-
I could heat it in the microwave but it really tastes so much better warming it up in the oven, which I'm currently doing.
-
And I don't care who knows it.
-
About twenty minutes it takes.
-
I have a strong feeling page ten is waiting in the wings.
-
See?
-
Back in a few momentous moments.
-
Never fear.
-
Want to read some reviews of what I just saw - will be interesting.
-
Interesting is good.
-
Good is interesting.
-
Especially compared to bad.
-
Kugel was good.
-
But I'm still hungry. What is THAT about?
-
I think the least caloric thing I could do for a snack, and I just happen to have all the ingredients for doing so, is make an egg and cheese burrito thing.
-
That might be satisfyingly satisfying.
-
But first - some notes.
-
Hello!
I saw Wickes today, and while I wouldn’t see it again, I was pleasantly surprised with its quality.
-
When I read that Linda Lavin had passed away today, I was reminded of her amusing performance of Sondheim’s “The Boy From…”
Here it is, recorded for Sondheim’s 90th birthday concert.

Hi Rodzinski!
Glad to hear that you enjoyed Wicked.
My daughter liked it as well.

Can't wait to read about that! ;D

That sounds good.

She saw it at a movie theater in Brooklyn with only 5 rows in the theater..
They also served dinner at your seat.
Lots of pink and green food choices. 😊
-
Hi, George!
-
Starting to fade.
Good night, George!

Hello, Iris!

I love that she performed this! She was the first person to perform this song back in 1966 (the year of my birth ;) ) in The Mad Show (https://castalbums.org/recordings/The-Mad-Show-/1797)!

Hello!
I saw Wickes today, and while I wouldn’t see it again, I was pleasantly surprised with its quality.
Oh, Wicked! My literal first thought was, "You saw Mary Wickes??" Where? In what?? :))
-
Notes are written.

So tonight, my friend Shelly ordered from Denny's new off-shoot delivery-only sandwich shop, The Meltdown (https://themeltdown.com/), and ordered a sandwich for me.
-
Linda Lavin story told.
-
We have a Meltdown here - had no idea it was Denny's.
-
Perhaps I'll order something from there.
-
Perhaps tomorrow.
-
She had the Hot Mess Melt, and I had the Hittin' Snooze Melt.
-
Enter page eleven.
-
I'm so glad I came.
-
What am I, Sally from Follies all of a sudden?
-
I enjoyed the Hittin' Snooze Melt that I got. I only ate half and will finish it tomorrow.
-
I really want to just order more food but I shan't.
-
Here's the link to their (very limited) menu:
https://themeltdown.com/melts/ (https://themeltdown.com/melts/)
-
But I want to.
-
But I shan't.
-
But I want to.
-
Let's just leave it at that.
-
I don't know if it's this way nationally, but here their delivery is exclusively through DoorDash.
-
New notes are up.
-
Up are new notes.
-
I've seen them.
-
I've read them.
-
I wrote them.
-
New notes shall be read.
-
But I didn't memorize them.
-
We have a Meltdown here - had no idea it was Denny's.
What's interesting is that it's all made at the local Denny's, but you can't go to the Denny's and order anything from The Meltdown. It's ONLY available through the DoorDash app and you can only have it delivered.
-
I don't know why. :-\
