Great pix, John G! I am unfamiliar with the book you mentioned, but intrigued.

Good morning, all!

It was a restless night; I never sleep well before an Access-a-Ride day, and this is one of them. I see my doctor for my 3-month checkup, and ten AAR wll take me to my barber for a much-needed haircut.

DR Vixmom, did you get my PM?

My chores are finished. The temperatures are expected to reach 84 F this afternoon, so I expect a warm walk from the barber to my apartment.

BK, I was reading yesterday about your Bacharach friend Marilyn Fox. in 1998. In 1998 I had a disastrous situation orchestrating Redhead - a dreadful show - at Goodspeed. The director, who's done marvelous work on major shows, barely spoke to me. At the beginning, he said "I don't want this to be a bunch of ditties," and even when a group of us went out for luinch, he always talked around me. So, at the sitzprobe, I got lovely comments from the cast, the Goodspeed music staff, and one comment from the director. He whined, "It isn't sexy."
I snapped back, "Sexy? You've never mentioned that word once to me in four weeks!" He made sopme retort, and I muttered something like, "yeah, sure, in a pig's eye."
Well, Michael O'Flaherty, Goodspeed's two-faced asshole music director at the time, heard me and dragged out out into the hall to yell at me for being disrespectful to the director. Following that ugly scene, I went outside and sat down in the middle of the road, praying a car would come by and hit me. O still had a week at Goodspeed, and I no longer wanted to be there. After sitting there for maybe 30 minutes, I got up, went back to my room to ponder the situation.
The choreographer told me the "Pickpocket Tango" wasn't sexy, so I sent to a rehearsal, watched it again, made notes and rescored it. I doubt it was any better than the one before, but it's hard to be "sexy" when the show was scored like a 1910 ragtime ensemble. I had - I believe seven musicians.
The week was awkward, and I never heard from Goodspeed until 2004, when Tony Walton called and asked me to score Where's Charley?. I warned him that Goodpeed wouldn't hire me and why. Two hours later, he called to say, they would love to have me back. I went back and had a wonderful time. At some point while I was in the music dept., O'Flaherty asked me what show I would like to do the next season, and I said The Boyfriend, directed by Julie Andrews. I came back to NYC and told everyone I was working on that show, until I learned from Dan de Lange that he was orchestrating it. I've only heard from Goodspeed once since then; an invitation to a big reunion at Lincoln Center. I went, saw people I liked, and O'Flaherty, who kept our chat to a bare minimum before he went off to cozy up to someone worth talking to.

That is one HELL of a story about Goodspeed, DR Elmore!
-
Redhead, eh? I've probably had that original cast album (LP) for 30 or 40 years, and I don't believe I've ever listened to it.
-
Anyhoo...
DR Elmore -- Andy Hammerstein has to be one of the nicest people around. When I walked into the building early "to see who's there", who was there but him, sitting by himself making notes for his talkback in the cafè/bar in the lobby. He looked up and almost seemed to be expecting me to come over and say hello, so I did. He said "I believe we might have mutual friends?", and said he'd been talking with you all morning. He thinks the world of you and your expertise in musical theater, and we talked for a few minutes about that and about last year's production of Allegro that he only wished Oscar II could have experienced, to have known that there was a solution to its problems.
-
.
I, for one, will NOT be celebrating National Egg Day.
Or National Oeuf Day.

So, Andy talked and did Q&As for 20 minutes or so before the movie. Janet Maslin moderated, as she frequently does there, and she's good at it except when the discussion turns technical (about film), at which point she needs to close her pie hole and leave it to those who know things -- like Robert Harris, who sadly did NOT join yesterday. That was disappointing, but Andy was in a great mood and he's a joy to listen to. I think he hadn't seen the movie in a long time, and he was obviously having a very good time watching and reacting to it throughout. It was a fine afternoon.
-
At this point I'm inclined to wager that "The Egg" is not vixmom's favorite song in 1776.

That is one HELL of a story about Goodspeed, DR Elmore!
Indeed.
It's a terrible show! There are a couple of good songs, but the book is all over the place, there's only one killing which is bad for a thriller, and the leading lady stretches credulity to the point where it screams. I also cringe every time Gwen Verdon speaks because her British accent is pathetic
I cannot believe all the Tonys it won. I think the only atmosphere was in Reuben Ter-Arutinian's gothic, spooky sets.
The composer, Alber Hague, came to the show and tod me he loved my orchestration. I think he was the only one!

Here's the casting breakdown for the upcoming revival of GYPSY.
Here's a link.
https://www.broadwayworld.com/equity-audition/GYPSY--Broadway--Wherever-We-Go-LLC-2024-43277
[ROSE] CAST. 40s. Overbearing. Charismatic. Powerful. Strong. Suffocating. Aggressive. Domineering. Pushy. Ambitious. Loving. Longing. Survivor. Brassy. Stage Mother. Driven.
[HERBIE] 40 to 50 years old. White. Male identifying. Baritone. Once active in showbusiness himself, he is now a candy salesman who becomes Baby June’s manager for her vaudeville show act, and falls in love with her mother, Rose. He is a devoted lover, who has a seemingly boundless level of patience for Rose’s antics and demands, and he is also incredibly caring toward her girls; invested not only in the success of their act but in their well-being as individuals. He tries time and time again to get Rose to marry him, but when they finally agree on a wedding day, Rose shoves her older, less talented daughter Louise into the world of burlesque, leaving Herbie resigned that Rose’s desire for attention and fame will never allow her to live a simple, married life with him. Baritone range.
[LOUISE] 18+ to play Teens through 20s. Black. Female identifying. Mezzo-Soprano with a high chest extension. Initially shy and introverted, she ultimately becomes a star. She is a quiet, intelligent young woman who has none of her younger sister June’s natural ability to put on a show. When she is thrust into a burlesque show by her mother, she transforms into a legendary stripper. Louise’s transformation from awkward teenager who has always been told she was a failure at everything to confident star of burlesque must be navigated with nuance and depth with skill and complexity.
[JUNE] 18+ to play Teens through 20s. Biracial; her mother is Black and her father is White. Female identifying. Mezzo Soprano with a high chest extension. Although she is in her mid-teens, Dainty June is a gifted and willful young woman, who ultimately refuses to continue perpetuating the “baby doll” persona she has carried with her since she was a young girl. Because she has opportunities to be accepted into mainstream show business, she elopes with Tulsa, one of the chorus boys in her act, to begin building a career on her own.
[YOUNG LOUISE] 10 to 12 years old. Black. Female identifying. Mezzo-Soprano. Young Louise struggles with the family’s focus on show business, as she is awkward, gangly, and painfully shy. Her awkwardness is capitalized upon by her mother, who shoves her in the chorus of boys who support her sister’s vaudeville act. Possesses a hidden strength that is often overshadowed by the presence of her extroverted younger sister. A strong singer and dancer.
[BABY JUNE] 8 to 11 years old. Biracial; her mother is Black and her father is White. Female identifying. Mezzo Soprano. Savvy and outgoing, Baby June is the perfect child star, eager and extroverted. Has a strong, bright voice and the ability to carry solo singing. Strong dance skills, including a background in ballet and gymnastics.
[TESSIE TURA] Late 30s - 50. Any Ethnicity. Female identifying. Mezzo Soprano. A professional stripper whose “gimmick” is being a ballerina. She has a lot of stripping experience under her belt, and is extremely jaded about taking her clothes off in front of men. She thinks she’s figured out the one and only way for a stripper to capture and maintain attention: to have a gimmick. She's a bit blasé about how she passes this wisdom onto Louise. NOTE: This role will likely double with additional ensemble roles. Experience dancing en pointe a major PLUS.
[MAZEPPA] Late 30s - 50 years old. Any Ethnicity. Female identifying. Mezzo Soprano. Trumpet Player a big PLUS. Mazeppa is a brash and ballsy burlesque performer whose “gimmick” is that she plays the trumpet while she strips. A tough and funny broad. NOTE: This role will likely double with additional ensemble roles.
[ELECTRA] Late 30s - 50 years old. Any Ethnicity. Female identifying. Mezzo Soprano. She is a burlesque performer whose gimmick is that her costume is covered in light bulbs (thus, the name). Her act involves some multi-tasking, controlling the light show while singing and dancing. Strong comedic character. NOTE: This role will likely double with additional ensemble roles.
[POP] 60s. Black. Male identifying. Pop is Mama Rose’s father, who never believed that his daughter or her girls would amount to anything. He is a pragmatist, religious and unforgiving. While this is a non-singing role the actor will likely sing in the ensemble and double with additional ensemble roles.
[TULSA] Late Teens - 20s years old. White. Male identifying. Baritone. Strong, athletic dancer (especially Tap). An ambitious, charismatic dreamer. Tulsa is a born performer, who has the presence and talent to command the stage by himself.
[L.A., EAST ST. LOUIS, KANSAS, LITTLE ROCK, YONKERS] 20s. White. Male identifying. Baritones and Tenors. The young men in Baby June's act. Hand-picked by Rose. Strong singers and strong, athletic dancers.
[AGNES] 20s. White. Female identifying. Soprano. Mezzo-Soprano. Alto. Agnes is a member of Madame Rose’s Toreadorables and one of the girls who Rose recruits to be in the act she threw together for Louise. Agnes is thrilled at the prospect of being an actress. A young, comedic character who sings and moves well.
[MADAME ROSE'S TOREADORABLES] 18+ to play Teens - Early 20s. White. Female identifying. Soprano, Mezzo-Soprano, Alto. The girls in Madame Rose’s Toreadorables, backup singers and dancers to Louise, who become “Rose Louise and Her Hollywood Blondes”.
[THREE NEWSBOYS] 10 to 12 years old. Black. Singing and dancing young boys who backup Dainty June’s vaudeville act. Strong dancers and singers.
[MALE ENSEMBLE] 30s - 50s. Male identifying. A variety of ensemble roles including CIGAR, a burlesque theater manager in Wichita; PASTEY, a burlesque stage manager in Wichita; GEORGIE, Uncle Jocko’s assistant; PHIL, a press agent, and BOURGERON-COCHON, a famous French photographer.
[FEMALE ENSEMBLE] 30s-50s, Female identifying. Members of the ensemble play mothers of auditioning children, waitresses, backstage personalities, and showgirls.

One of my favorites is spaghetti cacio e pepe, but that is really tricky to make. It's only 4 ingredients but the technique to get the cheese even and not clumpy is not so easy. I got it just right once but only so-so since then. But I trust practice will make perfect.

Most of our pasta cooking comes from recipes in either Marcella Hazan's cookbooks or one by her son Guiliano. She doesn't include a cacio e pepe recipe, so that comes from a David Kinch cookbook. I had four costumes.
Then I didn't miss seeing any. They are all great!

I have not been sitting here like so much fish all afternoon. We went to the library, the framer’s, Target, and Panera. When we got home I promptly zonked out in my chair for an hour. Guess in have some stamina to regain.
It takes a while.
-
Found some great luggage tags.

I think it is safe to say that "Bravo" was an excellent Wordle yesterday for Keith to get it in two.
Wow! Congrats to Keith!
-
That is one HELL of a story about Goodspeed, DR Elmore!
Albert Hague’s immortality came from The Grinch TV score, not Redhead.
For me, it was the original movie and TV show Fame. :)
-
And to paraphrase Bette Midler, I never miss a Sidney Sheldon musical.
:))

Also from playing Mr. Sharofsky on the "Fame" TV series
What he said! ;)

Vibes for getting back to your old stamina level!

Nice pictures, John, but they're so tiny. :-\

I brought a jar of “wild capers” back from Kos. Want to make puttanesca with those a plenty of anchovies.
What time should we come over?
No cooking until the pain passes.
~~~Pain-Passing-Quickly Vibes for MichaelG!!~~~
And...
~~~Pain-Passing-Quickly Vibes for John!!~~~

AND PAGE SIX DANCE!!

One more cast member has been set.
That's great, BK!

Most of our pasta cooking comes from recipes in either Marcella Hazan's cookbooks or one by her son Guiliano. She doesn't include a cacio e pepe recipe, so that comes from a David Kinch cookbook. There was also a good YouTube video that got me close before Kinch's more precise quantities helped get me there.
I once assisted Guiliano in a cooking class back in Sarasota.
Awesome! Did you used to live in Sarasota? Did you get to meet Marcella when she was there? My Dad has been in Sarasota for a long time and my stepmother got to meet Marcella and Guiliano there.
I never got to meet her.
-
Who's got the pain? John G.'s got the pain. :-X
-
At lunch, the DH set a can of V8 juice in the sink which had somehow gotten perforated.
-
But forgot to mention it to me.
-
And look what just arrived from Amazon: Dune, the Blu-ray of the 4K restoration from the original camera negative:
-
And I did do the mambo.
-
So, when I picked up the can - you guessed it - a geyser of tomato juice all over my glasses and my shirt.
-
Fortunately, it was just a ratty old t-shirt.
-
Nonetheless.... :)
-
He did offer to wash the shirt.
-
But I'm wearing it with pride. Like a tie-dye gone bad.
-
That original Dune does have a 4K disc available to purchase, but that release only includes the 4K disc, and not a Blu-ray disc, so I got the Blu-ray release since I don't have a 4K player, even though my TV is able to display 4K images.
-
Remember those art-a-whirl stations where you could drop paint onto a board mounted on a centrifuge?
-
County-fair style.
-
Interesting about Gypsy, DR Freddie.
-
I don’t like to watch video of myself.
The video isn't for you, John!
;)

Oh, no!
-
Interesting about Gypsy, DR Freddie.
I'd been thinking of listing each role, one role per post, to get us past page 7 -
But luckily, today, that doesn't seem likely to be necessary
-
But I'm wearing it with pride. Like a tie-dye gone bad.
That's the spirit!

Action shots.
Nice pictures, John, but they're so tiny. :-\
I know. They are better on his FB page.
-
We are about to have a video chat with Keith's cousin and her partner :)
-
I'm not sure if I will return tonight or not.
-
So close to the not-cared-for page 7 ... but if we can reach page 7, there's more hope of getting past page 7
-
Page Seven!
-
Good evening.
-
We took a whirlwind trip to Las Vegas, where we saw a show in a tiny theater and then visited several casinos for photos of the carpets.
-
But I'm wearing it with pride. Like a tie-dye gone bad.
It is pride month.
-
We were sure the carpets would have been replaced since we were there last, but we were disappointed that they were more tasteful than before. We love tacky.

I loved her. Seth Rudetsky does a nasty takedown on one of her Pajama Game performances

I'm not on Facebook anymore. Nice to know they're there.

What theater was it?
-
It was a tiny 50-seat theater north of The Strip.
-
That was pretty ugly, John.

Starting Torn Curtain. Loving it so far.
-
Torn Curtain has three top-notch suspenseful set pieces, beautiful use of color, and it's fun. It has problems, too, but the positives keep it afloat. I like it much more than I used to.
-
Torn Curtain, but set in the Midwest.
Corn Curtain.
-
It'll be a smash, I tell you.
-
A smash.
-
Not too long before the days start getting shorter again.
-
There's a cheery thought.
-
Let's all sing "Chiri Biri Bim."
-
Will they shave any minutes off Act II of Oklahoma! tonight?
-
Glad you are doing better, DR Ginny, but please pace yourself!
-
I Googled "missing Medieval servant."
-
It returned the result: Page not found.
-
What did the horse say after it tripped?
-
I've fallen and I can't giddyup!
-
Why did the bicycle fall over?
-
Because it was two-tired.
-
What do lawyers wear to court?
-
Lawsuits.

PAGE EIGHT!

Jrand's review is posted and it's lovely.

Good night, friends.

It’s much better a second time through.
-
Paul Newman’s writing on a blackboard is not the same handwriting as in earlier scenes.
-
Glad you are doing better, DR Ginny, but please pace yourself!
Thanks, DR Singdaw! I learned today just how little energy I have right now.
-
Torn Curtain, but set in the Midwest.
Corn Curtain.
Or how about Torn Carpet?
-
Paul Newman’s writing on a blackboard is not the same handwriting as in earlier scenes.
That’s just good spy technique.

Today, I went to Costco and had a hot dog with a diet Pepsi, and a vanilla and chocolate swirl ice cream cup.
-
I actually miss their frozen yogurt.
-
It seemed...less unhealthy. ;)
-
I doubt that it actually was, though.
-
Tomorrow, I think my niece is going to come over for a bit and help with some decluttering...I think.
-
We'll see.
-
Anyone here?
-
G?
-
BK?
-
USC?
-
UCLA?
-
Still gets quite chilly here at night.
-
Heatwave coming to the west.
-
But not here.
-
Which I’m fine with.
-
A new page.
-
But no new notes.
-
G?
I'm here.
-
Still gets quite chilly here at night.
I have my skylight open and it's quite comfortable where I am.

Heatwave coming to the west.
Yikes! :o Hopefully, it won't get tooo darned hot (a Cole Porter reference). :-\
-
Hi!
-
I'm up, I'm up - oh wait...
-
Is George eating a burrito?
-
Is anyone eating a burrito.
-
Does anyone still eat a burrito? I'll drink to that. And one for burrito.
-
New notes are up.
-
Up are new notes.
-
I've seen them.
-
I've read them.
-
I wrote them.
-
I'm tired.
-
Yet wired.
