Well, you've read the notes from soup to nuts and also from nuts to soup, and now you know that you most post until the souped up cows come home. To it, I say.
-
I'm a big fan of soup -- and of nuts --- so the TOD is one I like. I shall consider it tomorrow/today because right now I'm tired.

Split pea soup with....wait for it....ham chunks...can't be beat.
Cream of mushroom is quite special, too.
Vichyssoise vichisoise vichissoisse cold potato and leek soup can be very refreshing on a hot evening.
And sometimes, nothing else will do but good ol' chicken soup, be it with matzoballs or kreplach.

Good Evening! Good Morning!
Yes, indeedee, it was a great show and a great audience tonight/last night. And after the "Coming Attractions" sections, as BK mentioned, I had to hold a bit longer than usual. It was one of those times where each time I started to bring my fingers to the keyboard, the applause, hoots, hollers, etc., would get louder... Then I would try a few seconds later, and "it" would get louder again... And so on, and so on... I eventually started the intro for the next song, but I had even come up with a "alternate" intro just in case the applause kept going. :D
RE: "Testosterone" - As DR Jay mentioned, we saw this movie yesterday. And, yes, Jennifer Coolidge's line toward the end of the movie is priceless!!! -And I can't wait to hear him use it!!! I, too, was puzzled by the ending, but I think I've come up with an "explanation". Who knows? I may have to go out and get the original book now. Ah, well...
RE: Soup - Hmmm... There are some days when nothing but a can - yes a can! - of Campbell's Chicken Soup or Campbell's Tomato will do. Otherwise, I also like the Vietnamese "pho" in all it's variations, seafood bisques, minestrone (especially the "northern" style which does not have tomatoes in it), chowders, stews, etc. There's a Filipino soup called "chicken mami" - it's basically chicken soup with garlic and noodles with fried garlic chips on top for crunch and flavor. And I got hooked on this homemade black bean soup recipe a few years ago. I made batches of it week in, week out. It was sooo good. Hmm... I wonder if I can track down the recipe on-line...
Otherwise, the classic soup recipe:
1- Open can...
<ba-doom chick!>
-If not me, someone else.. ;)
Goodnight.
-
But before I go to bed... -I started reading the NYTimes on-line... Lots of interesting tidbits... Including Eisner handing in his "resignation" today - of course, he just will not be renewing his contract when it is up in 2006, so... In any case...
I believe it was DR RLP who posted this yesterday:
My absolute FAVORITE recording of "Enigma Variations" is one that was on the Angel lp label with Sir Adrian Boult conducting the London Philharmonic. I found it during a Thanksgiving 1974 trip to London and have favored it ever since. I've other recordings of it that have great things to be said about them, but the Boult "feels" best to me (I admire the Bernstein but it's a bit langorous in pacing).
Best of all is that I found this recording on CD and it arrived this very day via UPS. I can't wait to hear it, although it's on the "budget" Seraphim label. I fear it won't be as sonically splendid as the LP remains, but at a cost of $3.98, it's totally worth it!
I have the Boult recording, but mine is on the Angel Great Recordings of the Century series that was released a few years ago. It's coupled with a very nice reading of Holst's "The Planets". Great re-mastering, and a nice booklet too. So, if you're not "happy" with your Seraphim edition, you may want to investigate the Great Recordings re-issue.

OH! And DR PennyO posted this yesterday:
So I'll fly to LA next Thursday to have Rosh Hashanah with the family, back to Seattle Friday, head down to LA in the car with all my stuffaround the 20th, hang with the parents, then whoosh! I'm off the NYC Sept. 29!!! Oh, JOY!!!!!
So which performance of What If? will you be attending? ;)

I love all kinds of soup. Minestrone is a fave as is DR Jay's mention of split pea soup with ham chunks. I also like to add toasted croutons. MMM, MMM Good. I also love pumpkin soup and carrot soup. Cold soup faves are gazpacho and some desserty soups like cold fruit soups.
Jane, I have your CD pressed and waiting for your arrival. I don't know if you've seen all of Anthony's doll house pictures but I will make sure we have them so you can browse to your heart's content.
I'm at work right now having just finished a bowl of oatmeal with raisins and a nectarine and a cup of black coffee. I may go bowling tonight with friends, since Mr. Morelli is on Long Island clowning around.
I found another CD bargain yesterday, the television soundtrack to Liza with a Z. I have it on tape but there it was in Academy calling out to me. At $5.99 how could I resist. I do think it's Liza doing some of her best stuff. Bye, Bye Blackbird is wonderful.
And now I must get to work!
-
Oh I'm so excited, my bed is in town. I just checked on the UPS website. I don't think they deliver here on Saturdays. But I will call now to find out. Either way I will have my bed by Monday!
DR MattH asked if I could explain the end of Joey. Okay let me see what I can remember. So Joey asks his new neighbor to dinner. And she says she's married, "didn't you notice the ring?". And of course he says, "yeah but it wasn't on your left hand" (and points to her left hand which is on HIS right) :)
We then see Nancy O'Dell (sp?) from Access Hollywood saying what a success the show Nurses was (that Joey turned down). And they are interviewing the lead saying "i wasn't the first to be offered the lead, some guy named Joey Tribani (saying his name wrong) was". And then Nancy repeats his name, saying that guy must be mad.
At some point Joey's sister decides to let her son move in with Joey. But now Joey has no job. He goes to see his agent (Jennifer Coolidge) (not sure if you saw this part). And he gets an audition for a game show I think. But they are just having him read news type stuff from a prompter. WEll from 3. ANd every time the light goes on Joey has to switch where he is looking (which he can't do).
Now I'm trying to remember the ending. I know Joey's nephew is at joey's place and joey starts saying what a nag is sis is. And then she comes out (and joey says to his nephew "we need to find a signal for when she's here).
And then joey's sister pulls his ear and makes him say that he has a gay crush on david cassidy.
Also at the end joey screams out accidently that she was a single mom at 16 (she had told her son 22) and then the smart son/joey's nephew says, "how did i not figure that out?"
I don't remember the exact ending. But it was just more of the same.
Hope that helped.
-
Thanks, Jennifer. Some of the episodes you described actually happened before the business with the neighbor and Joey mentioning the ring not being on her left hand (which it was because por dumb Joey doesn't know left from right). But I appreciate the information.
I was hoping NBC would rerun the show tonight since they basically use Saturday as a dumping ground for reruns of the week's shows. Instead, they're rerunning THE APPRENTICE (along with an episode of CROSSING JORDAN).
I'm sure that JOEY pilot episode will be rerun sometime in before the holidays since show rarely have a totally rerun-free string of episodes before Christmas. At some point I'll see it.
-
If I'm in a restaurant and order soup, it's almost always French onion if I have a choice. I just love it.
Around the home environment, however, it's canned soup all the way. My local grocery store carries a line of soups under their own label that are among the best canned soups I've ever tasted. My favorite is called Tomato Garden, and it is so chocked full of vegetables that it's mind-numbing. The cans are tall and about half of the can will fill an average sized bowl to the brim. If I didn't have to watch my weight, I'd crumble crackers or bread into the soup, but, alas, one must eat it as is.
-
One of the DVDs that came in the mail yesterday was RODAN, probably my favorite of the Japanese monster movies of the 1950s. I must have paid to see it (15 cents) three or four times as a kid, but haven't seen it in many decades. I got the disc used so I'm curious how it'll hold up to my adult eyes. I'm hoping it will carry me back to being nine or ten again.

No doubt promoted with a tag line along the lines of "Relive the Magic."
-
unfortunately, the Rodan DVDs are all sub-par (the PD ones) with faded colors. I have superb Japanese laserdisc of it, which unfortunately has no subtitles, but I know the film well enough that it makes sense.

Now, might I ask where in tarnation IS everyone on this Saturday morning?
-
Soup: Their used to be a wonderful place on Sunset near La Cienega whose name I never remember (it starts with a "B") which had the best cream of mushroom soup ever. It was a garden-like setting (south side of street, down some steps) and I used to go there on Sundays occasionally and have a big bowl. I love good Wor-Wonton Soup. I love good chicken soup with a matzoh ball, but I'm very picky. I like the Lobster Bisque (or whatever they call it now) at the Hamlet, and I love good French Onion soup with lots of cheese on top.
-
MMM, French Onion Soup w/chewy, stringy cheese! I love it.
-
Ooooooohhh soup!
Minestrone
French Onion soup (only the version that has been in my family for hundreds of years!)
Homemade Chicken Noodle
Cream of Mushroom/Cream of brocolli
Homemade Vegetable (preferably made with red cabbage so that it turns a beatiful purple colour)
Miso with mushrooms
Hot and Sour with LOTS of tofu

The restaurant was called Barrymore's, as it was housed in the guest house of the old John Barrymore estate. The setting was exquisite, the food was wonderful, the service friendly and the prices reasonable. I do believe it was the House of Blues monolith that went up next door that rang its death knell. It was a wonderful place and THE number 1 restaurant to bring out of town visitors to. I obviously lament its demise to this day.

While I was walking this morning I came upon a garage sale at the house of a well-known character actor - the sale was actually to benefit a SAG election group. I bought some of the actor's albums - he went through the stack with me and approved of my purchases - said he knew most of the people on said albums. Soooo - I got the original cast recordings of SHE LOVES ME, NO STRINGS, WHAT MAKES SAMMY RUN, OLIVER, ANNIE, THE SOUND OF MUSIC - and the most interesting one - MRS PATTERSON, starring Eartha Kitt. Plus "The Entertainer" (Marvin Hamlisch) and the MOST intersting album: POLITICS & POKER: Songs to Get Elected by Sung by Howard da Silva and the Ward Heelers. (sic)
-
For those who watch the Apprentice, yes NBC is re-running it tonight. But it's a 2 hour episode with some new footage.
-
DR Matth, Rodan is such a fun movie! I think you will still enjoy it!
DR Panni, who was the well-known character actor who was having this garage sale?
Favorite soup: Homemade soups are, of course, the tastiest around and the split green pea with ham chunks is certainly a fave...oddly enough I didn't like split pea much as a kid.
About a year ago I went to a Russian restaurant in Portland and the soup was Borscht...man was it tasty! Yum, yum!
Pretty much I like about any type of soup, but Oyster stew is likely my fave.
-
Any time (oh - an Eddie Fisher reference for those DRs old enough to remember) I make a ham I always use the bones and remnents to make pea soup. It comes out better than any restaurant or canned pea soup I have ever had.

KRISTIN CHENOWETH AT CARNEGIE HALL was an entertaining evening despite a couple of faults. On the positive side, she was in excellent voice and looked beautiful. Her between-song-patter was a delight. On the negative side, her selection of songs left much to be desired.
Ms. Chenoweth is obviously trying to remove herself from her Broadway roots, and therefore most of her selections were not showtunes, to mixed results. A couple of attempts at c&w (which will be on her next CD) came off as a diva slumming and a number by her conductor Andrew Lipa’s musical in progress BETTY BOOP was also an error, and the one time she and the orchestra weren’t at the same tempo. However one non-showtune --- a Stephen Foster song, no less --- was one of the highlights of the show, as was “Taylor”, a song she had made her own until John Tartaglia started doing it.
In STEEL PIER, Kristin showed she could dance as well as sing, but it was not apparent last night. Despite choreography by Kathleen Marshall and two Broadway back-up dancers ((David Elder and Seán Martin Hingston), the dancing was very weak.
Two other problems… Carnegie Hall has excellent acoustics, so there was no need for such loud amplification. I’m not saying that she should have done the concert off mike, but not only was it loud, when she moved across the stage the sound stayed the same instead of coming from the area she was in. Also, a 24 minute intermission after only 42 minutes was not needed.
However when she sang a Jerome Kern medley, and especially an encore of “Glitter and Be Gay”, all was right with the world and you knew why this pixie from Oklahoma had made it all the way to Carnegie Hall.
-
Packers are here. Dry rot people are here.
-
Amusing thing of the day: The very nice Hispanic man putting on the new door to the garage is humming Terry's Theme from Limelight.
-
People are just sitting there like so much fish.
Not Barrymore's - BUTTERFIELDS, I think. That sounds right, doesn't it?
-
I'm here, but not for long. I have a very busy day: I have to help my sister (what else is new? ::) ) put up some shelves in her garage (she's getting it ready so that she can have a garage sale in a few weeks...of course, she's not selling the garage itself). Hopefully, if that doesn't take too long, I want to go to work to make up a few hours. I don't have much vacation time and I tend to take long lunches and leave on time, so that I have to either use vacation time or come in on Saturdays. I like the option, though...just not when I have so much to do!
Then tonight, whether I work or help my sister or not, I'm ushering for a local production. It's an annual event presented by Wrinkles of Washington (http://www.wrinklesofwashington.com/). This year it's called "A Gathering of Wrinkles (http://www.washingtoncenter.org/calendar/calendar_detail.asp?event_id=605)." They are "Puget Sound's Premier Senior Citizen Entertainment Troupe!" (members have to be at least 55 years old) and they put on a show every year. It's actually quite enjoyable! So that's my day. ;D

I love soup. I love to make soup when it's cold outside. Unfortunately, today it will be about 107F, so no soup for me.
As luck would have it, my DH bought a ham last night, so soon I shall have a lovely ham bone with which to make soup.
My church always has an soup-tasting party on New Year's Eve. There are always a dozen or so soups from which to sample. I always make a vegetable soup, since DR Sandra is vegetarian. I spend the previous day making vegetable soup stock from scratch, letting it simmer all night. And, of course, after Thanksgiving and Christmas there is always wonderful turkey soup.
In June, when we had lots of home-grown tomatoes, we made gazpacho, which is always yummy on hot days.
-
Today DR Sandra and I are going to see the touring "Oliver." We always park the car early and walk somewhere for lunch -- usually Chili's, since it's the closest to the theater. Isn't that exciting?
-
As for soups, I was never really a fan at all of soups. It's not that I have anything against them, but a soup would never be the first thing I'd pick, if given a bunch of options.
-
And on that note (E-flat),
-
People are just sitting there like so much fish.
Not Barrymore's - BUTTERFIELDS, I think. That sounds right, doesn't it?
You're right, I'm wrong. Got mixed up with the Bs and "Barrymore." Butterfields requiescat in pacem.

Speaking of so much fish, I like the taste of bouillabaisse (sp?)... but if there's a lot of shellfish still in the shell in it, it can be quite a chore to consume.
I never pass up a good gazpacho, and found myself in Columbus Circle the other day. There, the one-and-only food option is the famous Whole Foods in the basement of the Time Warner Center. Their gazpacho was marked "Grilled Gazpacho Soup" but I think they may have meant "Chilled" - I couldn't imagine what was grilled about it.
The best thing about the Time Warner building is leaving Whole Foods, which is not a knock on the gourmet megastore. The architect got exactly one thing right, which is a great sense of New York - as theatre when you come up the escalator out of the basement. You're staring at blue sky, and, little by little, New York buidlings (Central Park South, mostly, but also the Sherry Netherland) come in to view. That's a great experience, one that I'd recommend.

Adventures in the dog park this morning... There's a regular group who shows up early every Saturday and Sunday. They attended WHAT IF? together. A new person showed up this morning. A nice older gentleman with a brown poodle named Oscar. Oscar and Abie ran around chasing each other and had a great time. However, one of the dogs, Max, who belongs to a lovely couple - the woman is a lawyer and attended school with "Benjamin Kritzer" - this dog suddenly BIT the nice older man in the behind. The man had a tennis ball in his pocket and the dog decided to go for it -- through the pocket. The man was very understanding about it - more understanding than I would've been. The husband of the couple ran across the street to their house and brought ice for the man to hold on the wound. His wife the lawyer made sure that the man understood that this was not an intentional bite, but a grab for the ball gone astray. Everyone was suitably mortified, including poor old Max. Last I saw the man he was walking home with Oscar, holding the ice pack to his non-bite.

And a stroll through Zabar's late on a Saturday night isn't theatre?
Scene 1
Man: I want five bialys.
Clerk: [Points to onion rolls] These?
Man: You call that a bialy?
Scene 2
Woman: Quarter pound lox. Sliced thin.
Clerk: [Removes whole lox from case and starts to slice.]
Woman: You call that thin?
Scene 3
Woman to man: Oh please. The lumpfish eggs are good enough. They're coming from New Jersey, for chrissakes.
The End

Now that I have done my play writing for the day, I am leaving to get a haircut.
Can you plotz from the excitement?
-
François you are so kind to correct me thank you. :) I’m sure I would have been rather puzzled when I listened to the CD. I enjoyed the song and the link. :D
Tomovox, Juliette is a doll. And speaking of dolls do I spy a stuffed doll case behind her?
We missed the premier of Joey-I now have the first episode set to record on TIVO. Are there any other new shows I don’t know about but should?
If we are mentioning September birthdays again, my niece is on the 23rd and Keith’s brother’s is the 27th. We tend to ignore his brother’s birthday and celebrate a very special one, Craig’s. I can’t believe he will be 25 this month.
Bruce, what a show :D :D
And good vibes for a happy new home.
-
I always make a vegetable soup, since DR Sandra is vegetarian. I spend the previous day making vegetable soup stock from scratch, letting it simmer all night.
I knew there was a reason I adore that kid of yours. :D
I haven't made fresh stock in years. Since you inspired me to take my camera on walks, maybe I shall return to making fresh vegetable stock.
-
Soups:
I used to adore French onion soup. Unfortunately, I had what was the very best French onion soup my lips ever had the pleasure of slurping back in 1983 at the Grove Park Inn of Asheville NC during Sunday brunch. It ruined all French onion soups for me. I've tried others but none have come close.
A local bistro called "Cuckoo's Nest" has on its menu a spicy tomato soup that is thick and tangy and is served with a couple of nice-sized chunks of gorgonzola meant to be placed in the soup if one has no aversion to cheese. It's HEAVEN ON EARTH!!!
And in Oakland's Chinatown District, an eatery called Shan Dong has a sweet and sour soup that poets would write tone poems to. (The house speciality is Shan Dong chicken...a Szechuan dish...that is to die for...and the braised green beans are a feast for the senses).
Crap! Now I'm starving.
-
Ben even if I have seen all of the photos, I will be very happy to see them again. I just loved them. :D
Soups: Most cream soups, tomato, mushroom, vegetarian matzo ball soup, lentil and bean soups and French onion. In the fall I love the cream of squash soups.
Panni, I couldn’t help laughing at the dog bite story. I always carry treats in my pockets and have had almost the same experience on several occasions. Fortunately for me the dogs were a bit gentler on my backside.
-
RLP sometimes having the pleasure of a food so good it ruins it for all others is not a good thing. I know what you mean.
-
Jane, I make it from scratch because it's hard to find canned vegetable stock without some kind of offensive ingredient. You know how it is.
-
I really must be going. Company is coming and I have been reading and posting instead of getting ready.
-
Yes DRLaura and it tastes better from scratch. I have just become lazy.
-
Thanks thanks thanks (that's 3!) for all the good vibes....they worked superbly as we (also) had a great audience and a wonderful show. We are near to sell out tonight ourselves - so hurray!
No wonder I can't find any CD's by one of my favorite conductors....for some reason I kept searching under Andrew Bault....whew....spelling please....Boult! Whew!
Lots of activity among the HHW'ers....Saturday is a buzzin'.
RE:audiotronics. Has anyone else seen the "blooper" at the Hall of Presidents...when Lincoln stands, then slowly bends over at the waist and collapses.....while his voice goes merrily on....
OLIVER! If you can get an extra souvenir program or Playbill DRSANDRA, I will pay you for it....we are doing OLIVER! next June and I love stuff for the display in the lobby - and the tour is coming NO WHERE near Indy!
Okay shower time....then off to the theatre to work in the box office before playing Rick Steadman.
OH OH OH....I got a new Panasonic DVD player (gave my RCA to my sister) and my I LOVE LUCY DVD's play wonderfully. Avoid the RCA DRC230N - it has been trouble from Day One! Now my sister Myrna can fight with it.
-
Oh...chicken noodle was my favorite when I was growing UP!
Does chili count as soup? If so that is my favorite....if not...I go for cream of chicken.
But I don't eat soup when I go out....I am too messy and ALWAYS end up wearing some of it on my shirt!
-
Jrand54, glad you can finally watch the rest of your Lucy!!
I am going to run over to an estate sale quickly, then I must return and eat before I drive up to Vancouver for a birthday party for my friend Terry's 4 year old son's birthday. Then I must hie myself back to Salem to attend a wedding show for Mikayla Ryan and Sam Gattuci! Whew...I need a nap already as that is going to be a lot of driving. I will need to pile some good CDs into the car to listen to.
-
MB - I didn't mention the actor's name because some people are shy about having garage sales. And actually - it was his wife who was having the sale. He was just standing around being jovial.
-
François you are so kind to correct me thank you. :) I’m sure I would have been rather puzzled when I listened to the CD. I enjoyed the song and the link. :D
Tomovox, Juliette is a doll. And speaking of dolls do I spy a stuffed doll case behind her?
Jane,
You're welcome!
I'm so good at correcting people that my middle name is Mr-Know-It-All!
Yes,
Juliette is a doll and I'm so glad she doesn't live in that doll cabinet!
Knowing Tom, I would say that it's more of a (teddy) bear cabinet...
If wine was in there, it would be a cabernet cabinet... (ca bear net?!)
Could it be a .... soup cabinet???
Don't mind me! Thanks!

My favorite has Goldie Hawn

Good Afternoon!
Kind of a slow, but relaxing nonetheless, morning for me. I stayed in bed listening to the opera program on the radio for a few hours, and then finally put my feet on the floor and started my day. Some organizing. Some phone calls. Some laundry. Some TV. *How come everytime I come across Ina Garten's "Barefoot Contessa" show on FoodTV it's always the "Roast Chicken" episode?!?! And the "Trading Spaces" one was the New Orleans one - again!
-My throat also felt a little strange when I woke up. It's doesn't look red, but it feels a little "tight" - ?? Hmmm.. Maybe I just need to take my Claritin.
So... that's been my day so far. Exciting, huh? I hope to be venturing out in about an hour or so, and I may even catch another movie before tonight's show. We shall see.
Laters.
-
No soupy... pics! Love them (you had to know!)
http://www.playbill.com/news/article/88194.html
-
Yes TomOvOz, lovely niece-type picture.
MBARNUM drive safely!
DRPANNI you mentioned Vic Morrow...always a favorite of mine!
Now I am really off - to the theatre that is!
-
Tomovox, Juliette is a doll. And speaking of dolls do I spy a stuffed doll case behind her?
Juliette is the only doll - her inhertitance is behind her - not dolls - BEARS!
-
On this Sunday morning (In an hour or so) I am going to a Birthday party!! Breakfast followed by a "Surprise" movie and then a light lunch. It is a 60th Birthday with some sadness. The Birthday Boy's partner died 10 days ago and had arranged the party.
I don't think there will be soup for breakfast.
-
Ugh! I have just awakened from a two hour nap and feel so groggy. I went to my favorite Chinese buffet for lunch, ate too much really heavy food, and by the time I got home, I could barely hold my head up. Getting only six hours of sleep probably was the main reason I was so exhausted this afternoon, but I'll pay for this nap tonight more than likely with a sleepless night. Oh, no! :(
-
It's better to have a soupless day than a sleepless night!
Don't mind me!
Thanks!
-
I really love Panasonic products. My very first DVD player was a Panasonic, and the DVD recorder/player I use now is a Panasonic which seems to play any disc that other players find problematic.
The high definition receiver box I use in my den is also made by Panasonic and was hundreds of dollars less than similar models from other manufactueers.
-
Yes, I'm hoping a walk later this afternoon will shake away the lethargy and queasiness I'm feeling. Sipping on Diet Coke is also helping to settle my stomach.
-
Yes, but does Panasonic make soups???
Don't mind me!
-
A mini François non-soup frenzy. Make that a François non-soup mini frenzy. François is way too tall to be mini. Don't mind me either. Ah Nuts!
We should be discussing nuts. The native Australian nut - macadamia.
Macadamias are harvested here, sent to China where they are shelled and graded, sent back to Australia for dipping in chocolate and then sent for sale in Japan. Well-travelled nuts!
-
I believe DR Michael Shayne's HDTV is also made by Panasonic. Perhaps he will comment on his experience with Panasonic products.
-
I is not gone. I is here.
Soup: Split pea, hands down. My mother and brother hated it. Mom would put up a bowl for Dad and me when she was going out.
My Joe hates it. He has his Minetrone, I put up a can of split pea and add deli ham for me.
Nuts: Of course, Macadamia. (Some of my colleges are academia nuts, actually.) Got gaga over them visiting Joe's sister on Hawai'i (i.e. the "Big Island").
Good to see François is here. But WTHI Jason?
-
Some say Orr is pretty gamy.

After I got my haircut today, Dear Readers, I went to see a new motion picture entertainment called Criminal, which stars Mr. John C. Reilly, Mr. Diego Luna and Miss Maggie Gyllenhaal.
In the film, which takes place over the course of a single day, Mr. Reilly plays a small stakes con man who latches onto Mr. Luna and--partnering with him on a trial basis--starts to teach him the tricks of the trade. A huge con opportunity falls into Mr. Reilly's lap which he, of course, grabs, taking Mr. Luna along with him for the ride. Miss Gyllenhaal plays Mr. Reilly's sister, who works at the fancy hotel where the big con will go down.
The film is taut and suspenseful, made all the more so as everyone Mr. Reilly encounters, it seems, wants in on the con. Shot on location in various locales--rich and poor--around the Los Angeles area, the city provides a meaningful fabric that supports several turns of event in the story. The acting is terrific all around. It's nice to see Mr. Reilly in a lead role, as he's made such an impression in all the supporting roles I've seen him in. As has been the case on each and every occasion when I've seen her on the screen, Miss Gyllenhaal is completely irresistable.
I predict Criminal will do quite well, as many audience members will want to come back to their local cinema for a repeat viewing.

Evening all.
Soup. Mmmmmm. Mmmmmm. Good. Nothing beats home made but I also love some of the can kind. Campbells beats them all in my caned soup book.
I love to go to the Columbia restaurant in Ybor and get their soup and salad combo. That collard green soup and 1905 salad is to die for!
I also love French Onion soup. Sobicks (not sure of the spelling on that) makes the best that FO that I have ever had.
What can I say about Cream of Mushroom? Oh, the things one can make with that! I’ve already listed my coke and cream of mushroom beef roast recipe before.
And if I am allowed to be forward, I make a pretty good ham and mixed bean soup. I taught myself how to make it and even my Mom asks me to make it during the winter.
Nuts. I shouldn’t have them since I was diagnosed with diverticulosis but I do love them. Sunflower seeds are a favorite. Cashews, walnuts, black walnuts, pecans, butternuts and even the plain ol’peanuts. Total yum! Sometimes they are worth the pain they cause.
I had a little fuss at work yesterday. Nothing major but they were selling Barbequed Chicken for charity. I bought one of the dinners but when I cut into it, the chicken was pink. A co-worker said it should be pink because it was smoked. I said I didn’t care, it was still pink and I wasn’t going to eat it. Note I was not going to return it because it WAS for charity but I’ll be hanged for I’m going to take a chance on making myself sick over it.
Anyway, we had the old, “There are starving people who would be glad to have that.” argument but I still put mine in the trash.
Don’t you hate it when people want to try to force you to eat something you don’t want?
We had to cover all the computers before we left work again. I may not have to go back to work until the middle of the week. It’s all up to our friend Ivan. County Center is buttered up tight. They blocked all of the doors but one.
I saw most of the stores are boarded up today and the grocery stores are a joke. Try finding certain items like bread, peanut butter, water or batteries. All are long gone.
People are having fist fights at the gas pumps. A friend at work had his sister call and say she left one gas station because she was to scared to take her turn by herself. I didn’t see any of that but I did see the lines while I was out and about today.
If it comes, it comes. I think Mom and I have everything under control. Plenty of batteries, water and the all important dog food. The fish came home with me yesterday. I bet he’s confused as to what exactly is going on.

Sad to be all alone in the world. Where in tarnation IS everyone? Let's get some postin' frenzies goin' on, shall we? I'm on my way to the theater now - I wrote the second of the three songs I want to replace, and I'm going to play it to see if anyone likes it. If they do, I suppose we'll try to put it in for next weekend, but that depends on the learning skills of the performer involved, plus there will be some choreography involved in this number. We shall see.
Keep the home fries burning until my returning, and know I'll be yearning to read the posts upon my returning.
-
JRand-congrats on the show.
Matt H are you feeling better?
Danise, please be sure to keep us posted and good vibes Ivan stays far from you. I shouldn’t just say Danise. Who else might be in his path?
When I think of macadamia nuts, not only do I want to eat some, I think of Hawaii. They are extra yummy when dipped in chocolate.
-
I am watching the DVD CHO Revolution with Margaret Cho.
-
We spent the days with company from out of town, the daughter of a friend from high school (Bruce-Ricky’s daughter) and her fiancé. We took them to see A RAISIN IN THE SUN and then out to dinner. It is rare Keith and I give a standing ovation and today was one of those times. The play was superb.
I have mentioned our local festival often cast color blind. Just before the play began Keith leaned over and jokingly asked if I thought it would be the case of this play. Then the play begins opens with a child sleeping on the couch. If that kid is black we couldn’t tell. ;D
-
Hi Michael Shayne, what is the news on Ivan in regard to where you are?
-
My aunt who lives in Mobile, AL looks like she has a good chance of getting hit by Ivan.
The storm keeps shifting slightly to the west everytime the hurricane-experts update its path...
-
The copy of RODAN I got was pressed the Sony Media Entertainment, their Wonder Video division, the same plant that produces the ROCKY AND BULLWINKLE DVDs. Though there was obviously no remastering done, the DVD looks to be taken from a very good video master, so the sharpness isn't terrific, but the color saturation is superb. I was totally pleased with this DVD which features, of course, the English narration and dubbing that was present when I first saw it all those decades ago. A nice bit of nostalgia watching this.
My friend John called while I was watching, and he had never heard of RODAN. He's 38. Kind of surprised me that he'd never run across it on TV over the years.
-
Now I know what others have experienced. Sad to be all alone in the world.
-
My WILL & GRACE Season 3 boxed set came in the mail today, so I put POINT BREAK back in the to-watch stack since I'll spend the next few days watching these episodes.
-
I've been out and about and now cannot beileve my eyes! Not even 90 posts this late in the day! My cheerleader's outfit is at the cleaners -- what to do? I'll have to improvise...
C'mon everybody - you don't want to see me improvise! You really don't. POST!!
-
Soledad! Que tristessa!
Bueno! Voy a comer minestrone, ahora!
Hasta luego!

One of those interesting coincidences... Tomorrow at 11 I'm going to a memorial gathering at the DGA to celebrate the life of Dan Petrie - a lovely man and the director of the film version of A RAISIN IN THE SUN.
-
Hi Michael Shayne, what is the news on Ivan in regard to where you are?
Probably won't know anything until late Sunday or early Monday.
-
Tomorrow starts early for me... At around 6 AM I have to be at the CBS Studios of Radford (luckily 5 minutes from here) to help with the Ovarian Cancer Walk. My neighbor, one of the chief organizers of the event, asked me to help out. I'm going to be organizing the team from the Los Angeles DA's office. Better be on my best behavior.
-
It looks like it will hit the northwest part of Florida where the first one landed. But it is now a category 5 and it keeps on shifting so it is hard to tell right now

Page four dance

-
I always said two dances are better than one
-
I like it - double dancing. We could have a marathon. Post till you drop!
-
I never answered the soup question.
Good French Onion Soup. With a nice glass of white wine. Yummy.
Matzoh ball soup.
My mother's Hungarian mushroom soup wtih nokerli (that's gnocchi in Hungarian)
I once went to a dinner party in Vancouver where the hostess (a gourmet cook) served only soup. There must have been seven different soups - all incredibly delicious. Served with all sorts of divine breads. Heaven!
-
It's up to the three of us to save the day, MS and Tom. We are the Mighty Mice of HHW.
-
Excusez-moi, Francois! You weren't there when I posted. It's the Four Musketeers!
Except - I seem to be alone right now. Sad. Triste.
-
Am I hallucinating? I thought we were at post #101 last time I looked. Now we're at 95...
-
Francois - did you delete your post? Why?
-
We were on page four and now we are back to page three. So if people are wondering why we are dancing on page 3 when we say its four must be as Anna said. We got to catch up again
-
Francois - Why are you removing your posts? Are you angry because I said it was just the three of us when you weren't there?! Or are you joking? Please put them back. It's not fair to the whole board to suddenly start removing posts.
-
Okay we are back to page four again.
-
We can do it again!!
-
Well I will try to do some more but it is past 1am here and I am tired.
-
MS - Why did Francois do that, do you think? ???
-
We can try to at least reach 100. A much nicer number.
-
Well I will try to do some more but it is past 1am here and I am tired.
A cold shower and some major uppers will do the trick. All for a good cause.
-
Dare I say it's just the two of us, or will someone get offended and remove a dozen posts?
-
A couple more and we're semi-respectable again.
-
Deleting posts is NOT nice. In fact, it's rude.
-
I have some new pictures that will be going up on www.brucekimmel.com. Here is one of them.
It is from Stages and I think they guy is singing "Circles"
and oh yes didn't that shirt make an appearance in The First Nudie Musical?
-
Well I have deleted posts before. It all depends what the content is. Not necessarily rude.
-
So where is everyone tonight?
-
I didn't mean that it's rude to delete a post. But I believe that several posts were deleted by one person for no reason that I could see, other than to suddenly lessen the number of posts.
-
Well I am starting to see double and I guess that means we have over 200 posts then. Can't keep the eyes open. All the west coasters will have to carry on
-
Who is that in the picture?
-
Hiya, Panni and Michael. And anyone else out there in Kimmelland...
More work around the cabin today and then dinner in a small town not too far away... Jose: I'll be coming to one of the shows before I leave for NYC - but I don't know yet what the situation is with my folks... my brother has been taking care of them and will need a breather. But I will certainly get to see What If... can't wait!!!
Off to beddie bye... gosh, am I tired. Must be gettin' old or something. Hmmmm... ya think????
-
BTW if I didn't mention it in an earlier post the Margaret Cho DVD CHO Revolution was very funny and I liked it the best of three DVD out so far,
-
Hi, PennyO. Congrats on the workshop and the upcoming move to NY.
-
Who is that in the picture?
Are you serious?
-
Hey Penny O. A quick hello from the east coast and then I am off to bed
-
Oh - SOUP... before I toddle off: my mother's sweet and sour cabbage borscht!!! with boiled shortribs in. I will always dream of that soup, and the 2 big kettles simmering when she made it. We would gorge on one kettle for several days, and she would divide up the other kettle into individual quart or gallon portions for the freezer. Scenes from a Jewish childhood.
-
Are you serious?
It doesn't look like bk.
-
It doesn't look like bk.
It is.
-
Now it is good night for me.
-
Thanks, Michael. Regards.
Thanks, Panni. Can't wait!!!!!
-
Somehow I never developed a taste for borscht. Maybe one day...
-
Okay, Panni. Now you're on your own. Good night, girl!
-
Good night, all. I'm sure I'll have company to get us past the horrible ATL.
-
I have deleted MY posts because the system allows me to do so,
because...; for some personal reasons i'm in a pea mood -- bad mood!,
and because we've discussed that some time ago - over a year, i believe -- I'm one of those people who don't have a "fetichism" about that darn # of posts!
we express ourselves becuause we have something to say and NOT because we have to reach a ratio of posts!
some others have been "upset" like me by that in the past and don't even post anymore!
SO.... by deleting my "contribution" to the "cause" tonight, i'm showing how ludicrous it is to value the number of things! And to show that i was posting quite some!
"Not fair to the board"??? What is that jargon!
We post to be fair to the board?????
I'm here to have FUN, not to be counted! i'm not a number! i'm not a machine!
i'm a human being!
Well, i was not having fun anymore and i'm not having fun now either!
But i see that people are posting again and that we have loads of things to read!
As ei've said some 12 hours ago.....
DON'T MIND ME!
Please!
-
I see you there, Francois! Why don't you just put back all your posts and we'll be set. ;D
-
Nobody said you're a number or a machine, dear M. Francois. Part of the "fun" is getting past the dreaded ATL. That is not a serious goal. It's a fun goal. And what I meant by not being fair to the board is that it's like a kid stopping in the middle of a game, picking up his toys and saying, "I'm leaving." That's not fair to the other kids. Today of all days we shouldn't have differences over something so slight, non?
-
I CAN'T put my posts back! It's not feasable!
No one reacted to them in the first place why would they become important now???
Don't mind me!
-
I'm not "dear M.François!"
That's too condescendant, and i don't own a brothel house... yet!
"You're" the one making a fuss about that! i'm just explaining my reaction, and I don't even believe i need to justify myself!
"Hi! My name is François and i do approve that post!"
Lol!
Besides.... i'm at work and i'm supposed to check out guests here, at the hotel!
Gee, i'm glad i found a way for people to post on a slow saturday evening!! -- Sunday morning here 7:40 am!
-
I was JOKING about putting back your posts. That's why I put that silly smilie next to the suggestion.
-
ATL? ATL,
Is that the name of a new Broadway composer????
I know ATM.... there's one near the hotel at the post office, on the street!
You needed to know that and to have one more post to add to the quotas!
Quantity versus quality!
Silly world!
-
I'm not "dear M.François!"
That's too condescendant, and i don't own a brothel house... yet!
Well, that's simply my ignorance of the nuances of the French language -- which I haven't spoken in probably 15 years or more.
-
Deleting posts is NOT nice. In fact, it's rude.
That's why it's fun to do!! ;D
-
Well, that's simply my ignorance of the nuances of the French language -- which I haven't spoken in probably 15 years or more.
me neither but YOU have an excuse! :D
--- See, we're getting all those stupid -- mine -- posts back!
Where's Candide??
-
I forgot to mention how sweet Tom's niece was. I think it was his niece...
Those eyes!
-
Well, that's simply my ignorance of the nuances of the French language -- which I haven't spoken in probably 15 years or more.
Oh, if i were to call you Ms Panni while Ive been calling you dear reader Panni or Panni, you would know something's wrong!
As a writer you do know! It's the same in French and in English!!
-
Where in Paris is your hotel, Francois?
-
I forgot to mention how sweet Tom's niece was. I think it was his niece...
Those eyes!
Niece's daughter!
I believe! :)
-
Oh, if i were to call you Ms Panni while Ive been calling you dear reader Panni or Panni, you would know something's wrong!
As a writer you do know! It's the same in French and in English!!
Not really. It could be for fun or even could be said fondly. It's different in English.
-
Indeed my niece's daughter.
-
In the Center!
Where all the Jazz Clubs used to be!
http://www.hoteldanube.fr/
I'm just one of the night-audits!
-
For example, Jrand sometimes says "Mr. BK" to bk.
-
Hello, Tom. Do you think we have to give up on your package. Might it have been stolen?
-
Interesting birthday party this morning.
Breakfast at a cinema followed by a movie, "42nd Street", and then a light lunch. About 100 guests.
A good time was had by all. First time I had seen the movie on the "Big Screen"
-
Hi Panni . Don't give up. I am expecting one from Dan in Toronto too! Same ship I think!
All our mail is being kept at the Post Office for the next six weeks. I collect mail anyway rather than have it delivered. I have faith.
-
How was your friend after his recent loss? Could he enjoy himself?
-
Hi Panni . Don't give up. I am expecting one from Dan in Toronto too! Same ship I think!
That would be good. I have faith, too.
-
For example, Jrand sometimes says "Mr. BK" to bk.
Yes, but it's not Mr Bruce.... because François is my first name!
I'm French, hence feisty to fit the cliché!
I must sign off I give you all a breack!
Don't mind me! ;)
-
It's possible the Notes will be late tonight. (But they may not -- who knows? Not I.) bk is dining with the DR Pogue and the Lovely Wife.
-
Yes, but it's not Mr Bruce.... because François is my first name!
Oui. But I don't know your last name! I assume it's not "de Paris"... If it is - then I could have called you M de Paris, I suppose.
-
Well, I'm back from the Wrinkles of Washington show. It was quite delightful. The story (they write a new story every year) is that it's a reunion for the class of 1955 and everyone does some numbers and there's a tap dancing group and a belly dancer (and she's good, too!). Actually, they all really are pretty good. And it raises money for Senior Services, so that's always a good thing. So, I'm now off to bed. I get to sleep in in the morning!! My only day of the week to do so and I want to get a head start. Good night all!
-
Night, George!
-
How was your friend after his recent loss? Could he enjoy himself?
I think the day was good for him - the film was a break from the socialising. Many of his partner's friends and colleagues were there too. Thank you for asking.
-
I'm finally here and I must hurry now and get the notes posted. Lots to talk about.
