Title: THE WORLD OF NANCY KWAN
Post by: bk on May 02, 2013, 11:25:28 PM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of Nancy Kwan, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently watching The World of Suzie Wong and wondering if they'll get a signed booklet.

Good morning, all!

I am up early because I have to leave here for the radiology dept of my HMO by 8:00am. As soon as my foot is X-rayed, I will head for Toyland and wait for the delivery of the printed vocal scores. After all of the tsuris of getting these things printed and a lost day because of delays by a colleague, I hope there are no printing errors in these scores to further complicate things.

CD - LEAVE HER TO HEAVEN - which arrived today

DVD - MIDNIGHT LACE (rental) - Last time I saw this was in black and white pan and scan on TV. Good looking film with Rex Harrison in great form but Doris Day is AWFUL in this. Her scenery chewing hysterics on the stairs has to be seen to be believed. Apologies to Doris Day fans but she was no dramatic actress.

Good morning, all.  And a happy Friday all around, let's hope.

Slept better than the last three nights combined, thank goodness, but I shall still require a nap today for happier show playing tonight.  Main thing bothering me now is (I guess) post-nasal drip when trying to sleep.

Coffee!  Oh yeah, baby.

I think all the DRs I've met so far have lived up to their avatars just fine.  Don't know about mine, which is several years old.  I never seem to have what I feel are presentable pictures of myself.  And I wear contacts much of the time, but also a couple of different frame styles in glasses, so really, you never know what you're going to get.

Has anybody here ever used a white noise machine?

I had never heard of this before last week.  I am a pretty light sleeper and anything will wake me. And I am easily disturbed when trying to read (need complete silence if possible).

I know DR Elmore is easily disturbed by his neighbors (have you ever heard of these machines?)

Anyhow apparently there are a lot of different models. Many of them also have other nature noise options. But I got one that only does white noise and does not loop. IT's just a constant sound (like a semi-loud fan).  I just got it so I need more time to investigate. But when I put it on in my room and then put the tv on loud in another room I could not hear the tv.  I am very excited to try this overnight. I was just curious if these things are common knowledge.

The absolute craziest thing happened last night on the season finale of BIG BROTHER CANADA.

This is the first season. And they annoyingly decided to stop the live feeds and their late night Big Brother After Dark on Sunday so that they would not spoil the evictions that were being broadcast last night on the finale (the first and second parts of the last HOH comp).

Anyhow so in the first minutes of the show the host is talking to the contestants and they (the 3 finalists) reveal who won both comps (it wasn't 100% obvious but one person said they won endurance and one person said they weren't in the final comp so it was pretty obvious).

So at the end of the show they do the vote to crown the winner. And one girl (Topaz) is best friend's with one of the finalists. And they pull out her vote and it is for the other contestant.  And Topaz gets up and says that is not right that she voted for her friend. And she is hysterical/mad/upset/freaking out. And the host doesn't know what to do. She says that the voting procedure (vote for who you WANT TO WIN) was made clear. And there was nothing she could do if Topaz accidently voted to evict instead.

So they go to commercial break. And here is the funny part. That was the winning vote. It was the oddest/craziest thing I've seen on a reality show.

Yesterday was our annual "Employee Appreciation Day".   Each year, one of our agency's divisions "hosts" a 2-hour program combining lunch and presentation of service awards, plus providing some entertaining things like door prizes.  There is, traditionally, a theme.

Two months ago, the designated division dropped out saying it could not prepare the event as it is being transferred, on July 1, to a different agency within the County.

My division was selected to cobble together a program in two months when the norm is four months.

The theme chosen by my division's committee was "Mardi Gras."  While it did not fall on me to do any planning, I was approached about emceeing the event.  I agreed to do this, and I was subsequently asked to attend committee meetings.

Things I couldn't let pass:  Butcher paper for table coverings (for feeding 250-plus people).  I went online and ordered 22 Mardi Gras tablecloths (purple, yellow, green).  I also ordered some confetti plus sufficient "fringe" strips to adorn our registration tables as people come in and the awards tables that are seen from the stage.  The reception table had green mylar and the awards table had gold mylar.  (And it looked extremely beautiful at a small cost).

I also suggested a "Mardi Gras Mask" competition, encouraging divisions in our agency to design/construct/create Mardi Gras masks (from scratch, the only concession being they could buy a plain mask and then decorate it) and submit them for "Braggin' Rights".  We had 11 submissions!  We asked our Arts Commission (not part of our agency) to judge and come up with a winner.  They judged, but they insisted on four categories...three honorable mentions and a 1st place winner.   The masks were uniformly creative and beautiful, including one done by our Grounds division...it was a "green man" mask made of grape leaves and vines (adhered to a full-face mask). (It did not win in any honorable mention category or 1st prize, but it was indicative of the creativity coming from unexpected quarters).  Our director was so impressed, he has insisted they all be put on display in the main administrative space of the agency.

I am writing all this because it has been a very time-consuming project during regular work hours and it ate my entire day yesterday which began at 5:30 a.m.  We only had access to the building (a veterans building) from yesterday a.m.   We were able to stage all we needed to haul from our offices on Wednesday afternoon, but we all believed (there were about 10 of us) we'd be hard-pressed to get all done by 11:30 a.m. yesterday when the event started.

Things needing doing:  Set up the food service room (tables for service lines, chafing dishes for hot foods, baskets and cloth towels for bread service, etc.); set up the ballroom where tables had been put out, laying out the table cloths, putting banners up, putting pictures of the service awards nominees up, and decorating the tables with beads and fleur-de-lis, etc.

Balloons had been ordered and they arrived fully inflated.  We only needed to tie weights (we used washers) so they would rest on tables or floors.  A Zydeco band (three men) were hired at a nominal fee to perform from 11:15 - Noon.  The committee chairwoman is a phenomenally connected person in the Bay Area.  She knows everyone worth knowing, apparently, and she was able to do some amazing things.

The menu was fried chicken, red beans and rice, pasta salad and green salad, rolls, cornbread and cake for dessert.  We were set on everything five weeks ago except the red beans and rice.  Everyone local who prepared the dish wanted a minimum of $3 per serving.  Our budget was "extremely" limited and most of it paid for the chicken.

I suggested to Linda, the chairperson, we needed a donation from Zatarain's because that label's red beans and rice is pretty authentic and tastes great.  She fired off an e-mail that day.  The next day, Zatarains' confirmed they would provide food service-sized packets of red beans and rice (low sodium!) for 400 people.  And they came through.  She also contacted Aunt Sally's in New Orleans and requested a donation of pralines (possibly as a door prize).  What Aunt Sally's did, at our cost for shipping, was provide pralines to give to everyone attending.

Thus, added to all that needed doing yesterday was to have folks in the veterans building kitchen prepare the rice and beans.  It was several hours of work, but it was mostly "wait time" and it was PHENOMENAL.  The chicken, fried that morning by a local Lucky's grocery store, was still warm when they started serving, the red beans and rice were hot and prepared to perfection.  The rolls were freshly baked that morning as was the cornbread (by another committee member).

I'm telling you, I've never been part of an event that came together as beautifully as this one.  And the teamwork yesterday morning was unbelievable.  We had up to 24 people doing things without supervision and doing them to perfection.  One of my pet projects was decorating a "bead tree"...an upside-down Christmas tree covered with 72 dozen mardi gras beads (6 colors).  We placed it next to our Mardi Gras mural (painted by one of our architects) used for our "photo ops".  Everyone got to have his or her picture taken.  Another plus was that one of our people had a collection of Mardi Gras masks/head pieces which he donated so that people could wear them for pictures.

When it was all over and we had cleaned up, we had delivered the most memorable "Employee Appreciation" event I've experienced in my 17 years with the County.

A number of the committee members had donated hundreds of dollars worth of decorations and we're now being told we'll likely be reimbursed for most of it even though we never had any thought of reimbursement.

A point was made, as well:  For some reason, this was the most heavily attended event EVER.  We had so many people we ran out of tables and chairs, but the ones standing were content to eat standing up.  We did not run out of food, and the food was excellent.  I tried to keep things moving at a faster pace than previously experienced by me and we ended on time and with a hearty round of applause.  The point?  This event, to be done right, needs to be done with a creative budget.  In years past, our "department heads" contributed to make the event sustainable.  Last year they paid $180 each.  The food last year cost $900, and the total event cost about $1,800.  The County only pays $2.50 per employee (typically, a $500 budget for everything) for this type of event each year.  This year, we fed everyone for under $600.  And we haven't asked the department heads to fork over anything.

I went back to work and worked later than my normal quitting time because I am taking today off.  Last night, I came home and collapsed on my bed for an hour.  The only reason I got up was because I was so sore I needed some Ibuprofen.  I stayed up until 10 p.m. and then retired for the night.  I woke up only once for a quick trip to the loo.

This morning, I'm moving in semi-slow motion...going to make the day last as long as possible so that I'm refreshed for the weekend.

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

"Surveillance audio" hints that the box office people at I'LL EAT YOU LAST may actually be enjoying turning away the voters (and getting the suddenly available tickets to Bette's happy real fans):

Yesterday was our annual "Employee Appreciation Day".   Each year, one of our agency's divisions "hosts" a 2-hour program combining lunch and presentation of service awards, plus providing some entertaining things like door prizes.  There is, traditionally, a theme.

This morning, I'm moving in semi-slow motion...going to make the day last as long as possible so that I'm refreshed for the weekend.

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

What a great story.  WOW!!!

Friday afternoon greetings!  Richard and I were on the road to Cincinnati at 8:30 this morning to pick up Mary Linda for brunch at one of our favorite places and to see her off on the MegaBus to Columbus.  The occasion is her sister's graduation Sunday from Ohio State.  Rob, who's working today, will drive up tomorrow to join the family festivities.  By her taking the bus, they won't have both cars in Columbus and have to drive home separately on Sunday.

Many years ago, I bough stock in one of these white noise companies.  Lost about $5K.

And the new book will be available for preorder by the time you finish reading this.  This is always a happy moment.

Adriana Hofstetter is back and still marching to the beat of her own sixteen-year-old band. When Hollywood High School puts on a production of The Music Man, Adriana is there doing a story for the school paper. But when Bethany Miller, a student and cast member who has an unhealthy addiction to Instagram, doesn’t come home from school and remains missing, Adriana goes on the hunt to find out what happened.

Talking to irritating students, baffled teachers, and doubting detectives, Adriana is having no luck piecing anything together. With each passing day looking worse for Bethany Miller, Adriana must use all her wiles in trying to solve what happened. And then she receives a note, a one-word note: Stop. And then another threatening note is left on her apartment door. Can Adriana find the culprit before the culprit comes after her?

Of course, best friend Billy Feldman is there to lend his support while playing one of the leads in The Music Man, mother Margaret is there to keep her eye on Adriana while listening to her loud, classic rock-and-roll, and Detectives Ramirez and Coyne are there to listen to and question what Adriana discovers.

With colorful depictions of Hollywood, Adriana’s trademark sense of humor, and a crime to be solved, Murder at The Music Man is funny, suspenseful, and a cautionary tale of addiction to social media.

Lower priced hardcover (a couple bucks cheaper than it will be elsewhere on line) is $25 plus $6 priority shipping - books ordered through Kritzerland will, of course, be signed by the author and as always there will be a little special something included.

Nice Employee Appreciation Party, Ron Pulliam. Sandra's company had a Cinco de Mayo employee appreciation day today. Although it seems that the peons brought all the food, and it pretty much was scheduled so that they would be out in the field during the party, and the suits got to eat all the food.

Great story, Ron, and congratulations on making the employees feel appreciated, something that doesn't always happen on Employee Appreciation Day.

That was foremost in all our thoughts when planning the event.  There's not much "appreciation" in $2.50 per person, but then we are "County" employees.  For the first time in my experience, appreciation was expressed.

That seems so wrong.

At least our department heads pay out of pocket each year.  In the past several years, though, there has been grumbling from them.  I imagine last year's $180-per-department head fee was a bit much.

We were asked to avoid extravagance.  None of us were sure what was meant by that since no extravagance from past similar events sprang to memory.  One department head cosied up to Linda (chairperson) and me on different occasions to tell us she was hearing great things about the coming event.  Then she asked both of us about the budget.  We both told her we were staying well within the budget.  The more she heard about what we were doing, though, the less she believed it.

She had a great time, though!

Watching Werner Herzog's documentary, "My Best Fiend," about Klaus Kinski. He was a great actor, but a horrible person and I'm really having trouble watching his horrific behavior, too much of which was captured on film. And by someone worked with him on numerous films. Much as I like Herzog, too, I don't understand his letting the cameras roll to record a few of these tantrums.

Lower priced hardcover (a couple bucks cheaper than it will be elsewhere on line) is $25 plus $6 priority shipping - books ordered through Kritzerland will, of course, be signed by the author and as always there will be a little special something included.

I saw this on Facebook and I also see the same error here.

You mention the old title in the blurb

With colorful depictions of Hollywood, Adriana’s trademark sense of humor, and a crime to be solved, "Murder at The Music Man is funny, suspenseful, and a cautionary tale of addiction to social media."

I am sorry you all will see how fat I've gotten.  I really do need to do something about it.

they will be starting on the septic tank next Tuesday.

In other news, today is Sheena's 9th birthday!  Toby and Sheena got a hamburger from McD's.

Great story! So happy it has worked out for you!

Callie seemed better this noon, but tonight not so much.  She had her mad face on after we did meds  tonight so she may just be mad.  Ricky is laying next to her in her room and keeping her company.   I actually think she is doing better, I think I'll be able to tell better over the weekend

The title mistake is because I cut and pasted from the original blurb - it's only here and Facebook - it's fine on the site, which is all that matters/

Home from seeing Bullshot Crummond - it's a slight but amusing piece if done right.  This wasn't done right - game cast, lousy director.
