“DOIN’ IT FOR SUGAR”
KRITZERLAND IS VERY PROUD TO PRESENT A SPECIAL 2 CD LIMITED EDITION:
SUGAR
Original Cast Album
Music by Jule Styne Lyrics by Bob Merrill
Sometimes timing is everything. If, for example, Sugar, a musical based on a beloved film comedy, with two great male starring roles, directed by an amazing director/choreographer, had opened not in April 1972 but in April 2001, the year another musical based on a beloved film comedy, with two great male starring roles, directed by an amazing director/choreographer, instead of April 1972, my guess is it would have been a smash hit and run for a very long time. But The Producers had the timing and Sugar didn’t.
Sugar had the misfortune to open at a time when the musical theater was going through great change – as Time magazine critic T.E. Kalem put it in his review of Sugar: “Sugar is almost a textbook case of a musical born after its time. It may well enjoy great wads of audience favor. But in the past three years Company and Follies have altered the critical perspective by providing a musical form that is spare, intelligent, ironic, mature and capable of sustaining three-dimensional characters.” By 2001, audiences, after years of spare, intelligent, ironic, mature musicals, were ready, willing, and more than able to embrace on old-fashioned nothing-on-its-mind-but-laughs-and-entertainment musical like The Producers. But in 1972, Sugar, despite its non-stop hilarity and tuneful Jule Styne/Bob Merrill songs, seemed like a bit of a dinosaur, at least to critics. The book was deemed clunky and the score uninspired. And maybe it seemed that way back then. Now, it seems a model of musical comedy craftsmanship. From the first notes of the overture you know it’s a Jule Styne score – and what an overture it is, classic Styne all the way, with great tunes, one after another, all orchestrated by the wonderful Philip J. Lang. The songs are clever and fun and occasionally laugh out loud funny – it’s a real musical comedy score, the kind they don’t write any more. The performances are stellar, with great work from stars Robert Morse, Tony Roberts, Elaine Joyce, and Cyril Ritchard.
Sugar was originally released on United Artists records. It was then issued on CD in 1999 by Ryko (the Ryko is long out of print and bringing fairly high prices). For this release we pulled all the tapes from the MGM vaults. As was the case with Promises, Promises, the first thing we found was that the Ryko version was not the original album mix, but a remix that simply attempted to ape the original album mix. The original album masters were there, along with all the sixteen-track session tapes. After listening to the album masters, we couldn’t believe how much swimmy, washy reverb was used on that original mix (and on the CD released by Ryko). It was the fashion back then, but this was just about the heaviest reverb we’d ever heard on a cast recording. It robbed the orchestra of detail and the vocals sounded like they were in a huge garage. The album masters did, however, sound better than the previous CD release.
The sound on the sixteen-track session tapes was astounding. Yes, it was dry, and yes it needed some space added, but the recording itself and the way the band and performers sounded was so crystal clear and beautiful and brassy that it took no more than five seconds to realize that we wanted to do what we did with Promises, and offer an alternate new mix along with the original album mix on CD for the first time.
Remixing this score was a particular joy. Suddenly we were hearing wonderful orchestral details we’d never heard before – we placed the instruments a little differently in the soundstage for optimum clarity, and the vocals sound much more present and are no longer occasionally getting beaten up by the band the way they were in the original. So we hope it will be fun to hear this alternate mix with a lot less artificial processing – we think it gives the score a whole new vibrancy and vitality as well as crystal clarity.
This release is limited to 1000 copies only. We’ve priced this 2 CD set at our normal 1 CD price of $19.98 plus shipping.
CD will ship by the second week of October – however, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early). To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

Welcome eight GUESTS.

And a happy haineshisway.com birthday to Sigerson Holmes.

I just got this message:

Sorry, SMF was unable to connect to the database. This may be caused by the server being busy. Please try again later.
And I was practically the only one here! :-\
-
I just ordered Sugar!
-
In my CD player at work: Sondheim on Sondheim was delivered to me at work yesterday, but I didn't get a chance to listen to too much of it. That'll be the first thing I listen to, today. After that will be four CDs that I got at Silver Platters last night, after the game (the Storm won!). In no particular order: the original cast recordings of Big River, Goldilocks, Dames at Sea (with Bernadette Peters), and William Finn's Make Me a Song. I've never owned, or even heard this last CD. That'll probably be the first thing I listen to after Sondheim on Sondheim.
I figured out that I could've gotten all four of these CDs on-line for just about half of what I paid in the store, but dammit, it was so much fun just browsing through actual CDs...and for new CDs, the prices weren't too bad. :D

It's past my bed-time. ::) But before I go...
Very Happy Birthday Wishes to DRs Matt H., Joy, and Sigerson Holmes!! ;D

Morning all.
That is all.

TOD
The television series Sordid Lives which was on a cable channel called Logo which I didn't get.
The DVD is not available in the USA, but I got it from Canada while I was up there last week.
One would have to have seen the movie to understand the stories most of the original cast is back except Delta Burke, Beau Bridges, Krik Geiger who now is probably too "old" for the role.
The most notable cast is late Rue McClanahan in what was one of her last roles.
You can get it in the USA from its creator, writer, director Del Shores through his FACEBOOK PAGE. He will also autograph it along with his boyfriend Jason Dottly
-
Oh I forgot Ted Detwiler who was the lead in BK's staged reading of The First Nudie Musical
He is naked a lot, but in the episodes I have see so far re from the waist up.

DRMBARNUM - for some reason I thought you were moving LAST week.
But never pitiful!
Good morning, all! I stayed up too late watching three insane New Jersey housewives behave badly; Caroline seems to be the only sane one and, like Cassandra, no one listens. After that I slept fitfully with one dream that kept repeating like GROUNDHOG DAY, although I now have no memory of it.
Today, a session at Toyland with Mr Skip Kennon and a lot of writing about Victor Herbert.
TOD:
DVD: the Netflix items still sit here and I have no idea what they are now

Happy Birthday wishes to those who need them, former DR's or otherwise.
I'm ready for school and very excited to go. I believe all of the Sunset Blvd potentials have accepted, as of last night we were waiting on 2 people. If they accept, we have a fantastic cast.
I'm off... might be e/t until the evening, depends if I can have time during the school day to check in.

Happy Birthday wishes to Joy and MattH who left in a hough (In best Groucho Marx voice: "that's too fast; you could leave in a minute and a hough!")

Friday morning greetings! We are about to have a rainstorm, but I don't think it has anything to do with Earl. I honestly can't remember if it's rained since I came home from the hospital almost 4 weeks ago.

Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up... And I'm still waiting for Earl. I guess.

Greetings from Toyland! I am grabbing some lunch while waiting for Mr Skip Kennon.
-
The office rumor is...free pizza for lunch!

I have no ideas which musical numbers we will attack today.
I've packed up all of my Herbert recording material to schlep home and begin writing notes, but most importantly, I've turned on the AC.

As for the Friday Media Check...
Well...
I've still been a steady audio diet of WNYC and WQXR, however, I have started semi-randomly listening to various classical vocal CDs in my library that I haven't listened to in years. Mainly some of those wonderful duet albums featuring Felicity Lott, Ann Murray, Philip Landridge, etc.

Well, I have some errands to run and want to get them done before the rain starts. If it starts. So...

From the news today, did you know that the cheapest pet per year is a goldfish at $200.00 for food etc., the most expensive are large dogs at a minimum of $1500.00 ea.
Is that only for food? I don't even want to think about what we spend on Sherlock per year. ;D

Thank you DR's FJL, Vixmom, Cilla, & Jennifer.
I took Sherlock hiking on Mt. Ashland this morning where he found the only patch of water and sat in it. ??? I had intended to stay up there longer but alas, we had to return home to change his bandage. On the way home he barfed up the grass he munched on along with his breakfast & treats. At least he kept it on his car blanket.

Um, no - this was an 80s production with Namath. The one Druxy is referring to opened in 1974 a year after the show's B'way closing. It starred Morse, Larry Kert, NOT Elaine Joyce but Leland Palmer as Sugar, and Cyril Ritchard - the latter had a heart attack shortly into the run and Gale Gordon replaced him.
So, Druxy was wrong on two cast members - but he now has the correct information. All this is mentioned in the booklet notes.
-
Back from Bubba Gump Shrimp Company - it's kind of fun there and the food was good - I had an assortment of shrimps - tempura, coconut, cocktail shrimp and one other fried one, with various sauces and french fries. It wasn't too heavy and it was good. It's been so long since I've been to the Santa Monica Pier that I expected to do as I've always done - drive on the pier and park in one of the lots that have always been there. But, I guess at some point they stopped all cars from driving onto the pier - no cars allowed anymore.
-
I saw Nick after lunch and now I'm home - have to do some banking momentarily, after someone comes to pick up some CDs. Today was a big book royalty day - I haven't had any real royalty payments to speak of in a couple of years, but this was something else - every book had sales, and the new book had really good sales so for once I got checks that total more than a Happy Meal - I was very pleased, and I think this only covered the first two weeks of the new book, so the next quarter should be pretty good for that one.
-

Again, my memory is not what it was, but I recall seeing the show very early in the run with Gale.
AND, since Gale WAS in the show, I was only wrong on one cast member.

"Sugar" has been ordered. Hope I did the order right this time and let you know which titles I was getting.
-
I never have seen "Sugar," though the score is one of my favorites. I never much cared for the lyrics to "Sun on My Face," though, and I once mentioned to Jeff Hochhauser, author of "Vaudeville Man" and "Theda Bara and the Frontier Rabbi." He proceeded to correct me of my erroneous opinion by telling me how great Gower Champion's staging of the song was. He then enacted it in the middle of the restaurant. It didn't really change my mind about the lyrics, but what could I say after that except "You're right."

You were, I think, initially wrong with Tony Roberts and Elaine Joyce. It was Larry Kert and Leland Palmer. Ritchard definitely played the first week of performances as I recall, then Gordon took over. I think I saw Gordon's first performance during the second week of shows.

Last day of work. We had a barbecue and grilled 1 1/2-inch burgers in the driveway. Everybody brought food and we played Scrabble, Spades and Taboo all day long. Then we had our hugs, turned in our time sheets and fled the building. That's what I call a great way to leave a job.

Are the Danny Boy similarities in You Raise Me Up intentional?

Yay! THRILLER just arrived and I can scare myself silly tonight with the series.
I hated that episode about the mirror. I had nightmares for weeks.

I believe they are for that particular arrangement, but, I could be wrong. . .

Well, if the pants need to be lifted in London, of course there's a London derriere.

"Pigeons from Hell" is the one that terrified me.

I've had the Thriller set since Monday - haven't even popped the shrinkwrap yet.

Of course, THE INNOCENTS scared the piddle out of me when I first saw it in the theater. I remember, even now, thinking that I finally knew what a cold sweat meant.
I wonder if the film holds up after all these years?
-
Just completed the watching Sordid Lives. Ted Detwiler does get buck nakid. But Jason Dottley a bit more so

Happiest of Birthdays to dear MattH...

As far as I'm concerned it holds up very well, very well indeed.

Thanks TCB and Nicky :)

DR JMK what is the address for Bruce's show in Portland? I can't seen to find it.

THE INNOCENTS was my very first commission for underscore. I wrote a rather haunting little violin theme for the girl to play (is that right? Is she the one who plays?). I bet I still have the music somewhere. I was all of 14 or 15 or so.

BTW if you not to see Robert Morse and Anthony Roberts recreating their roles in female attire watch My Favorite Broadway: The Leading Ladies. The sing and perform The Beauty That Drives A Man Mad
Just watched this. Cute.
As I recall now. Roberts didn't do the Los Angeles production. It was Larry Kert.
Nope - it was Joe Namath!
der Brucer
Um, no - this was an 80s production with Namath. The one Druxy is referring to opened in 1974 a year after the show's B'way closing. It starred Morse, Larry Kert, NOT Elaine Joyce but Leland Palmer as Sugar, and Cyril Ritchard - the latter had a heart attack shortly into the run and Gale Gordon replaced him.
So, Druxy was wrong on two cast members - but he now has the correct information. All this is mentioned in the booklet notes.
You're right, LACLO did two productions, 10 years apart - 1974 and 1984

The Joe Namath production of Sugar was directed by - Robert Morse.

Back from a mile and a half jog and am watching the second movie in the Red Riding trilogy - I wondered why they didn't film the fourth book and today someone e-mailed me and told me - it was actually the second book they didn't film, for both budgetary reasons and because apparently not much happens in that book, which is called 1977.

Hmmm. I could have sworn Morse took the credit - maybe they did ANOTHER production. Andy Bew would have just been recreating Gower's work, then - he was in the original.

Where in Germany? My mom (who is German) has pictures of a visit from a few years ago and the landscape is very similar to this. She's from Bavaria, in the south.

Just found out the lyricist of "Suicide is Painless" (the MASH theme song) was all of 14 when he wrote that lyric. He was also Robert Altman's son.
-
Does anyone have a Sony Ericsson cell phone? I have always had Samsung and it is fairly easy to go from one phone to the other. So far I can make calls & answer this phone and that is about it. I'm reading the booklet however it seems to be lacking the information I want/need.

Did Morse repeat his role in the 1984 production?
If not, who played the part?
Also, the Ritchard/Gordon role?
-
There was another show that Ritchard was set for that I had tickets for, then he was replaced.
He was to do THE ROAR OF THE GREASEPAINT with Joel Grey at Melodyland, but he was replaced by Murray Matheson.
I guess Cyril didn't want to perform for me.

Mike Altman offers some interesting views of his father, writing the lyrics and the whole Altman scene in "Robert Altman: The Oral Biography."

Just back from a great steak dinner at a place called the Hangin' Tree Saloon, which surprisingly caters to an older crowd. All are country-western fans, of course. But the band tonight, named Geronimo, could have been called Geriatric. Great music, though, and the steak was a real steal. A 14-ounce sirloin with a ginormous baked potato and a salad for $12.
-
Was Joe Namath any good? Or am I being silly for asking such a question. I remember really horrible 70s tours of good shows with bad people. Another that comes to mind is Rock Hudson in "On the 20th Century." (The tour I saw with Frank Gorshin was probably even worse because Gorshin couldn't hit a note.)
-
Pleasant dreams, all.

Yes, the picture was taken on a tour of Mad Ludwig's castles in the south of Bavaria. This is Schloss Linderhof.

The credits also comment:
Hios directing and choreography credits include speciality numbers for Lillian Gish and Cyril Ritchard in the Broadway production of A Musical Jubilee, Sugar starring Donald O"Coonor and Robert Morse...and international companies of Peter Pan, Carnival, and Sugar.
