Title: READER'S DIGEST
Post by: bk on March 02, 2007, 12:15:37 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were easy for Readers to Digest, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're off reading the Reader's Digest and will be home soon thereafter.

Today, I'll be gone all day working at the Washington Center for the Performing Arts with the wardrobe people for the tour of Jesus Christ Superstar (http://www.washingtoncenter.org/season/season_detail.asp?event_id=814), starring Ted Neeley, who starred in the movie.  This is his "final" tour, from what I hear.  I have to be there at 9:00 am, and will be working for the show.  I might even get to meet Ted Neeley, himself!  So I'm off to bed. 8)

Here's the poster:

Not to be an ageist, but...isn't he a little long in the tooth for that role? I hope he doesn't hurt himself!

Good Morning Jack and Larry

Post by: Ben on March 02, 2007, 05:13:05 AM
I must thank our generous and kind FJL for thinking of me yesterday and giving me a ticket for Curtains!

I enjoyed it . It made me laugh. The cast is very good. It still needs some work but it's funny and tuneful. I think it's too long (the first act needs trimming). As Fred said, if they could trim it down to about 2:20 that would be  nice. The second act (I sound like a repeater) works better than the first act. I like I Miss the Music very much. I will try to see it later in the run, either closer to opening or after to see how much it's changed.

I waited outside but in the crush of people leaving the theatre I never did connect with Larry and Priscilla. It's just as well because I didn't get back home until a little after 11pm (not as long as Jose's trip). It was raining when I left the theatre but by the time I got back to 16th Street it had stopped.

I slept right through to the alarm this morning (I usually wake up before and turn it off so it doesn't ring and wake up Anthony) so I'm just catching up now. I've washed my oatmeal bowl and I'm about to tackle Robert Wood Johnson.

I'm listening to Alan Titchmarsh on BBC Radio 2 right now. We don't have any solid plans for watching or listening.

We do have solid plans with the lovely Priscilla this afternoon/evening. She's coming over after I return home from work. Anthony will show off the apartment (he's very proud of our home) and then we will have dinner at some place in Chelsea (to be determined).

Thanks, again, Fred for the ticket. Your generosity is unbounded!

It was great to have a spontaneous HHW Theatre Night.

Good morning, all!  I've got to finish this chart for Joanna Gleason today since was ambushed and led into temptation last night by some wonderful Kimlets.  The laundry is in the washer and I should be finished by 10 AM, then it's off to finish up CINDERELLA and begin ONCE UPON A MATTRESS.  I've got a weekend totally tied up with the recording project, and I have a chart to finish for my beloved Liz Callaway.

And to think when I went to Ohio I was worried about no work!

TOD:
CD:  The Brain from Planet X, Lizst Hungarian Rhapsodies both piano and orchestral versions
DVD:  Some things from Netflix that came in while I was away
  VCR:  the usual suspects

Yes, the rain has arrived in New York. The Midwest is getting snow and wind and we are getting 52 degrees and rain. When I left this morning I had my big umbrella in my hand. It is now dry and I can close it so my office mates don't trip over the darn thing.

The rain is supposed to stop by late this afternoon so Cil and Ant and I can venture out without fear of getting soaked.

The evictees did not really surprise me.  The girls were 2 of the 3 i suspected were leaving. And same for the guys. I thought it would be jared, aj or nick. Although the part that did surprise me was aj leaving this week (after the judges really praised him).

It really does show that those without promotion are not doing well. When people who are struggling like antonella or sunjaya (who got much more air time) are staying.

I will say this though about antonella and sunjaya. She is attractive. And although she annoys me to no end, i do find that she has a lot more star quality than the girls who left. And same for sunjaya. I was impressed with his first audition. And think that with much work he could be good. He has a nice voice. But he is not coming across well at all.

Oh and as for my theory, where it completely fails is for someone like stephanie who i never remember seeing. But she has such a powerhouse voice and the judges have praised her to death. So it is possible if you are really talented and have great stage presence to work against the system.

Is is snowing very heavily here today.

DR MattH, I really like Kellie Pickler and think she has evolved quite a bit.  The song she sang last night (that she wrote about her father) was lovely and quite moving.

And DR SWW, re: the tv guide, yes it was new.  In fact my sister was shocked that UGLY BETTY was not new. I guess she uses the same tv guide! :)

My first day of calling in sick to an editing job in the past 10 years. If you have to have the flu, it's a good day to stay home because you cannot drive into Atlanta. A bus full of college kids---a baseball team from Bluffington University in Ohio---drove off a bridge and landed on I-75. At least 6 of them died. It's a huge tragedy. The bus also landed on some cars. My commuting route will be gridlocked for hours.

I do love being Drowsy. If you go at the end of March you should still be able to see Robert Martin as Man in Chair. I think John Glover will be very good as his replacement in April but see Robert Martin. He's wonderful.

If you can see two shows see them both. Curtains will have opened by then (I believe the show opens March 22). I would definitely recommend seeing it but if I had to choose between the two (having seen neither) I would go for Drowsy Chaperone. As Cil said last night, the two shows are not the same, even though they are both about musical theatre and each has a show within a show. They are two different animals.

I think DROWSY CHAPERONE is a brilliant show, and CURTAINS is still finding its way, and I hope it can in the next three weeks.  If you love David Hyde Pierce, then you should catch CURTAINS.  I have no idea what the replacements in CHAPERNE will be like; the original cast was wonderful.

Greetings from the first morning after the first night in the city of the heim of Ana.  (that's getting old)

Getting ready for a day of reflection, some good music and some great content (one can hope, eh?) One never knows what one is getting into at the Religious Ed. Congress.  I check my workshops that I signed up for before I went to bed and it seems like today's chosen workshop all have a "media" theme to them.

Speaking of media - TOD

iPod - my trip "playlist" - listened to 65 of 120 songs on the way down yesterday (plus the Brain from Planet X)

no VHS or DVD in the hotel room.

More later....

Good morning!

We had a violent, stormy night with pounding rain and swirling winds (tornadoes in some areas) that kept me awake past 2 a.m.

Right now, of course, it couldn't be more glorious and the air is SO clear after that huge rain we had all day yesterday. Highs in the 60s today, so an early spring day for us.

I didn't get a chance to watch the IDOL results show last night due to tending to my friend, and this morning, the names of the ejected players were printed in the newspaper, so I figured I wouldn't bother watching since I knew the outcome. However, since DR Jennifer was enthusiastic about Kellie Pickler (and there was some discussion in the newspaper this morning about her somewhat obvious breast augmentation), I will watch portions of the show this afternoon.

As for those ejected, isn't it funny that both vocalists who sang the Broadway song "Feelin' Good" were among those ejected this week? What a coincidence!

In other news...

I may have to head out into our "backyard" and clear out the drain in the middle of the patio. Right now, there's a big "puddle" out there, and from what I can tell, it looks like the water may have come up to the same level as the threshhold of the frenchdoors.  Nothing came into the apartment, but it looked like it started to seep in sometime last night.

As for "American Idol"....  Part 2

POTENTIAL SPOILER

DR Jennifer - Yes, Sabrina was one of the five contestants who sort of appeared out of the blue, so she may be a "hole" in your theory.  However, I think it really comes down to which contestants happen to have - or not have - built in voting blocks.  -And after what my roommate experienced the other night...

He had grabbed a cab in midtown and was taking it over to the East Side to meet up with some friends.  This was around 9:45.  Once he got in the cab and told the cab driver where he wanted to go...

Did you watch "American Idol" tonight?"
-Yes, I was just watching it with some friends.
Are you voting for Sanjaya?
-Um... No.
OK

That's when my roommate noticed that the cab driver was texting continuously throughout the drive over to the East Side.

-Excuse me, it's illegal for you to be using a cell-phone while driving.
But I'm not talking on it.  I'm just texting.
-Well, I think it's still illegal.
No, it's not.
-If you're not going to pay attention to your driving, could you please pull over and drop us off now?  And I've already taken down your Medallion number.
Oh, OK.  I still have another hour to vote.

The cab driver was voting for Sanjaya!  Even though there was no possible way he could have seen the show that night - unless he had a TV mounted in his cab somewhere.  So...

-The "funny" thing is that my roommate had made a somewhat politically incorrect joke about this type of situation happening.  I guess he was right.  :-\

And I've already heard reports of the whole campus of Catholic University in Washington, DC., voting for their fellow student... Antonella.

So... Who knows?!?!?

I believe the comments the judges made last night were spot on.... "Remember, it's a singing competition."  And not necessarily a popularity contest. Although, "America" doesn't seem to know the difference.  Nor care about it.

But is AMERICAN IDOL a singing competition, or a making-someone-a-star competition?  The latter would imply a certain combination of singing talent and charisma.

OH... And update from yesterday....

RE: My Good "AAAAAAGGGHHHHHH!!!".  As of the phone call I had a couple of minutes ago, it looks like things may work out for this potential gig.  "They" are having another meeting this afternoon, and my "contact" would really like me on board.  I'm supposed to start next week, and he's willing to work around the fact that I will be in Atlanta for most of next week, so...

That's where things stand now.

Again, it was really was just nice to get the call.

DR Jose, Fantastic!  Tell Patrick howdy for me.

My sound man called and cancelled bcause of a cold, so I'm home finishing up my chart for Ms Gleason, then over to Staples to copy it.

That weird dream I had might make sense after all.  I do have a fear of exotic foodstuffs.  But is it telling me to branch out and try strange foods, or telling me to beware of them?  And why is this dream so clear in my mind?

Maybe I need to get a reading from JRand.

We are having another one of those days here in Phoenix that almost makes us feel guilty this time of year.

Hello, MUSIC GUY! I'm doing fine, thank you. Our weather here is in the mid-50's (I like, I like) and the snow of last week is virtually gone. Got lots to keep me busy, too!

Book - Mastering the Art of French Cooking, by Julia et al.  I've given up on Julie and Julia, too much of a chick flick in book form.

DVD - Going through my collection of Good Eats DVDs, watching the eps in broadcast order.  It's interesting to see what running gags started in so early in the game.

I don't know about "evolved" -- she totally looked like a Nashville hooker.

The hair was hideous, the makeup was mawkish and the dress was dreadful.

Re: last night's AMERICAN IDOL

The evictees did not really surprise me.  The girls were 2 of the 3 i suspected were leaving. And same for the guys. I thought it would be jared, aj or nick. Although the part that did surprise me was aj leaving this week (after the judges really praised him).

It really does show that those without promotion are not doing well. When people who are struggling like antonella or sunjaya (who got much more air time) are staying.

Oh and as for my theory, where it completely fails is for someone like stephanie who i never remember seeing. But she has such a powerhouse voice and the judges have praised her to death. So it is possible if you are really talented and have great stage presence to work against the system.

I recall Nick and AJ having just as much, if not MORE, exposure in audtions/Hollywood rounds as anyone else.  Certainly as much, if not more, than Sanjaya.  Apart from his audition, I saw very little of Sanjaya until the final cut.  Nick and AJ totally got more in-between time.

I'm going to do some work to a plain flat wall, so that the new screen is in a rather theatrical setting.  Here is a picture of the wall right now, before we make some modifications to it.......

As DR Jose suggested, last night I downloaded and installed Finale NotePad and after a slight learning curve, I had a great deal of fun with it.  I was able to quickly copy the intro of "The Ladies Who Lunch" and it sounded pretty good.  There were a few instances where a slurred to note would disappear from the staff, but I could still hear it.  And it was getting late, so I just saved the file to its native .MUS type, so I'm not sure yet if it can be saved as a midi.  But overall, I think it's a much better tool than Cakewalk for my purposes.

re: american idol and something dr Jose said.

I don't recall seeing stephanie or sabrina until the finals. But i think sabrina falls into the same category for me as stephanie.  They are both really strong singers. They have a nice stage presence.  And the judges have praised them a lot. So i think that is why they are still in it.

As for nick and aj (and the comments DR RonP made). I personally don't remember seeing them featured in the audition shows. Maybe they were shown in their original auditions. But their stories were not memorable i really don't remember any focus on them.  Also they may have been shown during groups week. But if they were they were not the focus of the group.

I do wonder if maybe some of the people who were not featured simply did not have interesting stories. Or maybe they did not have as much presence.

I was surprised aj went this week, not because i think he has any stage presence at all. But because the judges said such great things about him this week.

I agree with the DR who commented about this being a competition to find a star. So it is not only singing. But also star quality that is a factor.

I don't know what to say about paula emphasizing that it is a singing competition. Yes it is. But if people don't like aj or nick. Then maybe they don't want to watch them or vote for them.

Now what DR Jose said about people block voting just because they like somone because they are indian (without watching the show) ... well i guess that will happen. I actually don't think sanjaya (thanks DR RonP) is that bad. I mean he's been bad during the voting shows. But i actually think with some work he could have potential (to me much more than someone like antonella).

I do wonder why he (sanjaya) did so well in his original audition and during hollywood week. What has changed? Is it the number of people watching that are making him so nervous?

Oh and one last thing. The reason why i said sanjaya was featured a lot was not because they showed him that much during hollywood week. They did not show him at all. But his original audition was one of the ones they made the biggest deal about. And his story was known by basically everyone who watches idol. He stuck out. Then they made a big deal about showing him and sister. And so that became a big story as well. I really could not tell you a thing about nick or aj or jared before the voting shows.

And I've already heard reports of the whole campus of Catholic University in Washington, DC., voting for their fellow student... Antonella.

So... Who knows?!?!?

What about the Indian-American students - do they split between Sanjaya and Antonella?

The GWU block would still be less than 10,000 voters - enough to play a part in keeping her alive for a while, but not
enough, I suspect,  to control the later eliminations. As the candidate numbers dwindle, the opportunity for multiple-blocs arises. I daresay that the candidate best able to assemble and maintain a dedicated block of multiple voting devotees might best symbolize the "American Idol" - not talent-wise, but popularity wise. And, record producers don't care if an album sale is based on talent or special-interest identification. And we all know how much "special interest" audience identification plays in live theatre paid admissions.

It is surely a flawed system, but has anyone proposed a better one?

Well, DR Dan (the Man), I guess it would depend on how you define “show business.”  If you consider holding down a corporate job by day, but singing an occasional cabaret or musical theater program at a local retirement home “show business,” well then: slap a star on my door and call me a Broadway Baby!

I consider music and theater my avocation, and I supplement my day job income with singing gigs, mostly in area churches and synagogues.  I play the piano a bit, but wouldn’t want to try to make a living from it.  And no, I do NOT play the xylophone [sorry, BK].  I was an English major in college, but spent most of my time pretending I was enrolled at the Music Conservatory the next building over.  I would say I love classical music – especially choral music – and theater/cabaret music equally.

I am a pack rat and love to add CDs, DVDs, and musical theater scores to my collection at most every opportunity.  I prefer plain ‘ole water to Cherry Coke [sorry, DR Sandra], and while I do visit the gym every day, to call me a body builder would be like calling ‘Contact’ the Best Score of the 2000 Broadway season [sorry, MBarnum].

Is that enough?  Have I said too much?  There’s nothing more I can think of to say to you…

Oh, and thank you, DR DearReaderLaura, for telling me, without my having to ask, what DR stands for.  I should have been able to figure that one out!

Regards-

I can't believe you don't remeber Nick, DR Jennifer. Much was made of his dropping out from intense pressure during last year's Hollywood round and his attempting to earn his way back on the show. His audition was featured and then he got a lot of attention during both evenings of the Hollywood round.

In fact, before the semifinals started, I had him installed as one of the favorites from the way I had heard him sing last year and this year. He was, it turned out, one of the most disappointing to me of all the men.

AJ, I admit, I don't remember much about. There was no way he was going to win this contest, but he's a heck of a lot better than Sanjaya or Brandon, both of whom are still around.

I got many things watched this afternoon. I began with SCRUBS which was something of a cheat, one of those clips shows that all comedies seem to feel the need to do at least one of. Most interesting thing about it was how many pratfalls the cast has taken in six years and how often John McGinley has changed his hair/wig style.

30 ROCK had a funny show with Liz dating Wayne Brady, and his accusing her of racism when she tries to break up with him. Tracy mOrgan had some funny bits, and Kenneth the page stole the show as he always does. Alec Baldwin had less to do this week, and Jane Krakowski had even less than Alec.

CSI: NY had a different type of episode with people dying in ways that mimicked a star magician's tricks on the streets of NYC.

Danny and Montana finally made a connection this week, too. They may be a cute couple. Nice to see Anna back on the show after maternity leave.

Next came MR. MOTO'S LAST WARNING, the next entry in the MOTO series. I was disappointed that it was more espionage thriller than mystery. We know the bad guys from the very beginning, and so it's just a matter of Moto finally getting them in a spot where they can show their playing cards and he can trump them. Not one of the best entries even with stellar supporting actors like George Sanders, Ricardo Cortez, and John Carradine.

The transfer is really superb, though. Apart from the 4:3 aspect ratio and mono sound, the movie looks almost brand new after a couple of speckles at the beginning.

California Bill Would Give Newborns $500 Savings Accounts
Thursday , March 01, 2007

SACRAMENTO —
Every child born in California would get a $500 savings account to start building a nest egg for college or down payment for a home, under a bipartisan bill introduced Wednesday in the state Senate.

The proposal would cost taxpayers about $285 million a year.

Under the bill, every child born in California after Jan. 1, 2008, would receive the money, regardless of their parents' income or immigration status. Recipients would repay the state's initial $500 investment once they turn 18.

The money may be used for three purposes: college or continuing education, a down payment on a home or a retirement account.
...

Let's ignore the NannyStatiitis of the proposal.
Is there no better use for a quarter of a Billion dollars/year of "yet to be found" money:

Pre-Natal care for the uninsured

Pre-K health care for the uninsured

Sufficient Substance Abuse programs

Adequately staffed free-clinics to off-load our Emergency rooms

Properly staffed Children's Services Departments

Sufficient free evening ESL programs

Adequately staffed Library resources (both in school and community)

Is the lack of an adequate nest egg for emerging adults really our most pressing social problem?

Do you have the full 9CD set. I bought the box thinking it would be good to share with the Grandlads, but haven't watched any yet.

I've been renting it from Netflix. I still chuckle at the musical literacy that Leonard Bernstein expects from the munchkins in the audience. I think it'll be wonderful for you Grandlads--and I suspect you'll enjoy it, too. I watch many of the lectures/concerts twice.

I also like the idea of not just exposing kids to serious music, but of really raising the bar. It seems to me that so much has been dumbed down, whereas this clearly was NOT. I think that kids can do a lot more than we often expect.

Let me know, DER BRUCER, what you think of it.

The Lads are already quite willing to sit quietly for a whole show album (or an Elton John collection). They also sit patiently through all the DVDs of Joseph, Little Shop of Horrors, etc. Alex was riveted to the screen the first time he saw the Disney version of Peter and the Wolf (and they sit still with obvious interest for full length musical stage shows). When we play the CDs they first respond to the instrumentation, the lyrics come next. I just wish they could get some close-in viewing of an orchestra playing. In the good old days, the HS orchestras used to visit the lower grades and give small performances. One of the best ways to introduce youngsters to the classics is to have a good narrator that can introduce "programatic" classics and guide their listening. (The Moldau and Pictures at an Exhibition make a good starting point.) Their parents never play music at home or in the car, and insist that the kids wear headphones when they lisiten to their CDs (even at home) so there is never a "community" sharing of the music. Kids are great sponges, but you do have to make an effort to dip them in the water!

We all brought our own lunches to school today. Brandon had a sammints and a pudding cup. I told him to eat his sammints before his pudding. (I had to say that because the teacher was there. If it had been MY lunch, you'd better believe I'd have eaten the pudding first.) But instead, he filled up on the chips that Brody shared with him. I said that if he didn't eat his sammints, I would eat his pudding for him. Ashton and Kayla wanted in on this because they didn't have desserts in their lunches. Brandon didn't believe I would actually give his dessert to the girls, so he didn't eat his sammints.

The pudding was delicious. Ashton and Kayla agreed.

Yes, but fortunately kids can learn from people other than their parents. My parents weren't music lovers and seldom listened to it, but how I loved both Lena Horne and Ella Fitzgerald when they were on TV!

Surely you know Benjamin Britton's Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra? I've always loved it. I've never heard it in concert, but it comes around from time to time.

Are there any sites geared to music for kids? Wouldn't that be nice? Think of what you could do! Free to everyone! I get excited just thinking about it. EDISAURUS, do you know anything about this? Or VIXMOM?

As for nick and aj (and the comments DR RonP made). I personally don't remember seeing them featured in the audition shows. Maybe they were shown in their original auditions. But their stories were not memorable i really don't remember any focus on them.  Also they may have been shown during groups week. But if they were they were not the focus of the group.

Your not remembering them does not equate to their not being featured "as substantially" as any of the others.  I suspect you remembered who you liked.

Also, this not remembering them does not validate the theory you said was proved by last night's evictions..  Half the evictees last night were featured "as much as" anyone else I can recall.

And you are correct about Sanjaya....he wasn't featured during Hollywood week at all...except at the end when he had to let his sister know he made it to finals.  Again...NO EXPOSURE of any significance for Sanjaya except that he is memorable for walking in with his sister, auditioning for the fun of it (SHE was the one they went to auditions for), and for having Simon tell him he was better than she was.

I didn't think much of either of them, but I remember them.  And I remember more attention being given to Nick and A.J., as well.  And to the guy who left last week...Paul Kim.

As for folks who were the focus of their groups, many of those folks were rejected.

Of those remaining in the competition after last night, Lakisha, Melinda, Gina, Stepanie, Jordin, Sundance, Blake, both Chris's, Jared and Phil are equally prominent in my memories from the auditions/Hollyood segments.  I remember at least the auditions of most of them, and significantly more information on several who have been voted out.

That is all.

Speaking of the new guy, you all have been all over him like a duck on a June bug today (Texanese for "pounce").  But your newbie hazing didn't frighten him, so looks like he's a keeper..

Welcome, DR Singdaw to the "wacky, zany and wildly entertaining" world of HHW (I'm recycling that quote from my Brain review, but it fits, so that's okay -- DR Jeanne said she was kidding, but all newbie's first pledging ritual is to buy and then post a review of The Brain From Planet X on amazon.com and CD Baby, so when you get that done, let me know then I'll sign off on your pledge manual) ....

Hey, except for spelling Karen wrong (where the hell did Jim come up with Karrin? -- must be a typo) and the Chicago part -- the rest fits me to a "T." ...(Well, I'm not really a police detective, I just play like one sometimes...you know, when the ol' man likes to play "The Leprechaun and the Lady Cop" sometimes  ;) ;))...

Yes, we've all seen the genius Geico.com insurance commercials: "So simple, even a caveman could use it."

Now these quirky spots, Variety reports, are being turned into an actual half-hour comedy project. Viz, " 'Cavemen' will revolve around three pre-historic men who must battle prejudice as they attempt to live as normal thirtysomethings in modern Atlanta."

Anyway, I'm home now for a couple of hours.  I went to Subway for lunch (I had a coupon for a free 6-inch sandwich when you buy a six-inch sandwich, a drink and chips).  I have to be back at 6:00 pm.

I got to the theater at 9:00 am and we basically just took the costumes from the gondolas (as they're called in the biz) and brought them downstairs to the dressing rooms.  There are five of us locals working with one traveling wardrobe guy and I've actually worked with him before (I don't remember which show, though).  His name is Brian.  Some people (a Sondheim reference ;)) steamed clothes.  One girl washed a few things that needed washing.  We all had to unpack shoes.  I had to spray all the shoes with Odor Eater spray...not too pleasant when you have 27 performers and they each have two or three pairs of shoes. :P When Brian asked me to do that he said, "...and especially Ted's." ::) I guess Ted has a bit of a foot odor problem.  Anyway, that was the morning. :)

Now, I'm going to catch up on all the posts, take a little nap, shower, then change into my show blacks (black shirt, black pants, dark shoes and any color of underwear that I want...I'm thinking blue plaid :D) and head back to the theater.  The show runs about 2 hours, not counting the intermission, which could be either 15 or 20 minutes.  I don't know what I'll be doing during the show, but Brian said that afterwards it could take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour to pack it all away.  15 minutes would be great...we could get out of there at a resonable time, but if we take the hour, that's just more time that we can get paid for. ;) We'll see.

Good Evening!

Well, it turned out to be a quite nice afternoon here in DC.  The rain stopped, the skies cleared and the sun came out.  Alas, by the time all that happened, I was in a rehearsal studio on the 10th floor playing auditions... Looking out at the now-beautiful day.  -Which, unfortunately, made the three hours of auditions seem like a full day - at least to me.  Thankfully, the afternoon was filled with good people, but, still, those were a long three hours.  -At least for me.

Wouldn't it make more sense to spray the shoes before packing rather than let them ripen in transit?

der Brucer

Well... Having done the tour thing, I actually know the answer to this query...

If the tour is playing multiple nights in a city, then some costumers will go ahead and spray the shoes after the evening's performance, and then they can sit out overnight in the air to dry out and deodorize (hopefully).  However, if a tour is doing one-nighters and split weeks - like the current tour of JCS is - then all the costumer wants to do at the end of the evening is get everything packed up as soon as possible.  And spraying "damp" shoes doesn't really help if the shoes don't have the air (and time) to "breathe".  So, the spray in the morning when they're unpacked.

*And if you want to talk about dirty/stinky laundry, then you should check out the baskets of clothes that need to be washed the following morning in the new city...  :-X

And as for Ted Neely - His vocal cords are basically "trained" to sing JCS at this point and time.  And it's basically the only thing he can really sing at this point and time.

Yeah!  It worked!  And you liked it!

As for saving as a MIDI file, I'm not sure NotePad has a "Save As" MIDI file option.  However, if you click on "File", then "Save As", if there's a "Standard MIDI" option there...

And, again, if you don't feel like spending the big(!) bucks for Finale 2007, PrintMusic should meet your needs nicely for about a fifth of the price.

Yes, DR Miss Karen, but you triumphed over that adversity and became a GODDESS, so you certainly showed THEM!

*  *  *

Did anyone else see A.O. Scott's wildly sarcastic review of the new movie, "Wild Hogs." in the New York Times?  The review is kind of a hoot.  Here's a teeny excerpt:

"The main thing about these guys — the main source of the movie’s fumbling attempts at humor — is that they’re not gay. Really. Seriously. No way. They may worry about people thinking that they’re gay, and they may do things that might make people think that they’re gay — dance, touch one another, take off their clothes, express emotion — but they’re absolutely 100 percent not gay. No no no no no no. No sir, I mean, no ma’am. That’s what makes it funny, see. "

The link is here, if you care to read the whole thing:
http://movies2.nytimes.com/2007/03/02/movies/02wild.html

And...by the way, BK, have you ever considered entering the Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest - you know, the one for the [purposely] worst opening sentence for a [theoretical] novel?  With doozies like...well, anything about a gazelle...I think you'd have a good shot at the Grand Prize.

The Golden Opulence Sundae, the "World's most expensive sundae", was created to celebrate Serendipity's 50th Anniversay last year. (If you are paying attention, the 50th anniversary is the "golden" anniversary. Get it?)

Made with "5 scoops of the richest Tahitian vanilla bean ice cream infused with Madagascar vanilla and covered in 23K edible gold leaf, the sundae is drizzled with the world's most expensive chocolate, Amedei Porceleana, and covered with chunks of rare Chuao chocolate, which is from cocoa beans harvested by the Caribbean Sea on Venezuela's coast. The masterpiece is suffused with exotic candied fruits from Paris, gold dragets, truffles and Marzipan Cherries. It is topped with a tiny glass bowl of Grand Passion Caviar, an exclusive dessert caviar, made of salt-free American Golden caviar, known for its sparkling golden color. It's sweetened and infused with fresh passion fruit, orange and Armagnac. The sundae is served in a baccarat Harcourt crystal goblet with an 18K gold spoon to partake in the indulgenceserved with a petite mother of pearl spoon and topped with a gilded sugar flower by Ron Ben-Israel."

Wouldn't it make more sense to spray the shoes before packing rather than let them ripen in transit?

You'd think!  It makes perfect sense, but I've never worked for a touring company that did it that way. :-\

Media check:
Cd:  John Williams plays the movies.
(Not John Williams writes movies scores - otherwise there would only be one or two tracks that are interchangeable)

DVD:
Last night's efforts met with failure.

Newly purchased copy of "Flying High" (Airplane) did not work after 15 minutes.
Tried to watch "Oliver & Company" but really didn't like it much.  It may work as a dramatic story with human characters.  Maybe setting it in London would work.  Now there's a twist.

I stand corrected! :)

And, in the "File under Unexpected Developments" category:

It is reported elsewhere on the web that Hal Prince's 1978 film adaptation of Sondheim's "A Little Night Music" will be released on DVD for the first time in June.

Hoo and Ray!  It's not a great film, but it will be great to have it on DVD at last anyway.  And don't miss Jonathan Tunick's cameo in the opening moments...

It's about time!!  But will it have any bonus features?  Will there be audio commentary from Liz and Len or Hal and Steve or Diana or anyone??

I think if I didn't freelance I would take more sick days. But the clients sometimes are charged a cancellation fee, plus, if I don't work, I don't get to pay myself! Friend Adam Long gave me the CAMELOT report today.

He said that Michael York was very good.  He gave highest marks of all to Miss Rachel York as Guenevere.  Mixed notices for Mr James Barbour as Lancelot mostly for his accent that seemed to be all over the map.

DR ELMORE - your friend Mr Time Winters was also proclaimed excellent as Pellinore.

Sets and costumes beautiful (as befits the second stop on a tour) - excellent music.

Mordred as played by Shannon Stoeke was not appreciated by Mr Long or his party.

There was no souvenir book available because the cast had just (last Sunday) approved all photos to be used.

DR ELMORE - your friend Mr Time Winters was also proclaimed excellent as Pellinore.

Small world department. I was in a Shakespeare reading group with Mr. Winters long ago in 1982 and 1983. A friend decided we should read all of Shakespeare's plays in order and every Monday night for weeks we did that. Time was part of the group along with many other actors. I always remembered him because of his name. I haven't seen him since, except (again, in the 80s) across the lounge at Equity during auditions or his name would pop up in the credits of some television show, especially when he was in LA for periods of time.

We had a grand visit with Cil. She came over to the apartment and we chatted and relaxed and then she got her fried chicken fix! Apparently, earlier she asked Master Chef/Tour Guide Mr. Jose Simbulan where to get fried chicken in New York and he mentioned Chat and Chew (a block from our apartment). When I was mentioning our options for dinner, I spoke of that place so there was no question where we would go. She had a delicious plate of fried chicken with skin-on mashed potatoes. Anthony had a very good meat loaf, also with skin-on mashed potatoes and I had a chicken pot pie. We also had unlimited refill iced tea (unsweetened). It was just enough food. We didn't have dessert but we did have a wonderful time. If your ears were burning you know why. We walked over to Sixth Avenue from Chat and Chew, helped Cil hail a cab and she was on her way back uptown. She may be back at M&M World for all we know (they are open until midnight, after all).

Good night, all. I'll check in tomorrow morning.

His real name is Tim, and it was a published letter to FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMDOM that added the final e to his name.  He went through high school as Time, and I dearly love him.  He's been living in LA for the past 20 years, and I used to see him when I went out to mix a recording with BK.  I spoke to him on the phone when I was working on The Brain, and i'm still pissed at myself for not inviting him and his wife to the invited dress.

He makes a great Sherlock Holmes.  In fact it was an Off-Off-Broadway Holmes mystery that got him a rave review in theNew York Times and a ton of phone calls from agents who wouldn't give him the time of day till then.

LOL, not I didn't go back into M & M world tonight, I still have plenty from my trek there this afternoon, but I did take some photos of the animation outside the store.

Had a lovely time with DR Ben and DP Ant. It was great fun and Chat and Chew was delicious.  We did chat and we did chew...

I didn't realize until I got back to the hotel that I forgot to take photos!

Jose-I want a taste of the sundae, minus the caviar.

Maybe Jose knows:  Is there any way to get that dessert caviar without buying the overpriced sundae?

I've had "dessert caviar" before that was made from pearl tapioca, but from the sundae description, it looks like they're just using American Golden Caviar which is very mild to begin with.  It's used a lot for garnishing, and it's often tinted/colored and flavored to suit the respective dish.  And the description does say it's infused with passion fruit, orange and Armagnac.

I wouldn't be surprised to find it carried at Dean & DeLuca or Balducci's.  Although, frankly, I think all you really would have to do is buy a jar of American Golden Caviar, empty it into a bowl, pour some passion fruit and orange juices and Armagnac over it... Then drain, and serve.

I'm guessing it's like the tobiko that sushi chefs use, another very mild-tasting fish roe.  -Which is also colored and flavored according to the chef's whim.

*I've colored tobiko before - and it's very easy.  So, that's why I think it would be easy to "sweeten" the golden caviar.

My Panasonic DVD player (2 years old) has a connection for a three-prong cable called "to enjoy progressive video" - is this what is used instead of the "s" cable to get the better picture on a one them new fangled tee vees?

Yes, you must use the component outputs (red-blue-green) in order to turn on progressive scan video. And in most players, that doesn't happen automatically. Once you plug in those cables, go to the setup menu on your DVD player and choose 480p in the video settings. The default is 480i which is all you can get with s-video.

I've abstained from chocolate this evening, even though the temptation was mighty strong to get in Ye Olde Motor Car and go get someone.  However, while I was going through a pile of paper tonight, I found a gift certificate for a pound of See's.

I'm home, I'm settled and I've eaten dinner.  The show (JCSS with Ted Neeley himself) was great...well, it sounded great.  I was backstage the whole time.  There were six of us locals working with Brian the tour wardrobe person and it was a very, very easy show to work!  I love it when shows are like that. :D Anyway, we basically just put the clothes out onto racks behind the stage, where the quick changes took place.  There were some changes downstairs (only one flight), but we didn't have to do anything down there.  Most of the costumes were put back into the gondolas before the end of the show, so it really only took us about 45 minutes until we were all done. :)

As for the cast...they were all very nice people (and incredibly good looking! ;)).  Very helpful and they really knew the show and all of their changes well enough that even though I might have a change listed on my sheet of changes, a couple of times, someone would come up and say that I don't have to help with this change or that one.

I met Ted Neeley!  He was so nice!  He spoke to anyone who talked to him and just before the show started, when we were all backstage, he greeted everyone and shook our hands and wished us a good show.  Very genuinely nice. :) AND (and I'm not saying that this is a bad thing at all, it's just an observation), he's short!  I'm about 5' 9-1/2" and the top of his head didn't even come up to my eyeballs!  He's very slight of build.  But the voice is still there!  The audience loved him and the show.  I wish that I could've seen the show itself, but working backstage was pretty fun. ;D

Now I'm home and all is well.

I wanted to bring my vinyl record of the soundtrack to see if he might sign it (he would've), but I was running a bit late and couldn't find a plastic bag and then I talked myself out of looking for one thinking that he wouldn't want to sign anything.  Opportunity missed. :-\

Indeed!  It shall henceforth remain egregiously overlooked!

If you'd like to read a completely fictional book about someone who was fired from a record company that's totally made up, read BK's very own Rewind (http://www.amazon.com/Rewind-Bruce-Kimmel/dp/1420877909/ref=sr_1_6/102-7422810-3076119?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1172908434&sr=1-6), if you haven't already.  It's total fiction and completely made up.
