Title: THE TRUISM
Post by: bk on February 28, 2007, 12:28:42 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were true, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - is that a truism?  Or a mooism?

Through the country side.
   Stay on the track.

Is there a moment - a lyric/word, harmony, melodic turn, etc. - in a song that you absolutely adore that puzzles you?

Yes, and it's a great example of what you're talking about - In Johanna - the famous "off" or "blue" note that comes totally out of nowhere, makes no sense, and yet, somehow, works.

-And I'm still amazed that when Warner Bros. updated the Sweeney Todd vocal score, that they did not transpose "Johanna" nor the first part of "Epiphany" to the show keys (at least the ones in the rental parts).  -And the Appendix of "The Beggar Woman's Lullaby" in no way resembles what it "really" is.

Oh... As I'm looking at my vocal score for Sunday in the Park with George...

When you're rehearsing a show, is there any sort of ritual or process or tradition you follow once the show moves out the rehearsal hall and into the theatre?

For example...

-And I picked this up from a college professor of mine...

On the last day of rehearsal in the studio, I tear off a piece of the tape that was used to mark off the set on the floor, and I place it on my score.  My professor - who was a director - would place a piece of the tape on his script.

BK, when you first mentioned that you had watched "Man of the Year," I thought you were talking about THIS (http://www.amazon.com/Man-Year-Fort-Atkinson/dp/1572524324/sr=1-8/qid=1172652247/ref=sr_1_8/102-7422810-3076119?ie=UTF8&s=dvd) movie! :o I never saw the Robin Williams movie, so it's not what first came to my mind. ::)

Plot Synopsis: Mockumentary look at Playgirl Magazine centerfold and 1992 Man of the Year, Dirk Shafer, who kept it a secret from the magazine that he is gay. Most of the film is a fictionalized retelling of Dirk's decision to send a photograph to Playgirl, his selection as a centerfold and then Man of the Year, his many TV interviews, his friend Vivian Paxton posing as his beard, and the pressures from his live-in lover to come out of the closet. Interspersed with this chronological narrative are a black and white look at an evening Dirk spends with Angela Lucassey, a woman from Reno who wins Playgirl's national contest to have a date with Dirk, and an interview with a stripper who tracks Dirk down.

Here's the cover:

How could they just lose a measure??

I dunno.  But it's even marked as an edit.  In the "original", it's as follows - the following are the measure number markings:

(The lyric during this section is "And I thought: Well, he cares--  This is more than just malice...)

14  15  To->17

However, in the "new" version, it's:

14 To->17

Now, I know that 16 was already edited out.  But then 15 too?  -Yes, it's basically a "vamp" bar, but still...

Wha' happen'd?

Yesterday afternoon I was doing yardwork in the front yard when the Goldstein family next door came home from their day at work/preschool. The girls came over to say hello, and I got out a container of sidewalk chalk, and we drew chalk pictures on the driveway. It was fun to relax and play for a while.

Four-year-old Mae-Ling Goldstein is going to be quite a matchmaker when she grows up. She told me that her daddy needs to get married. She drew daddy and a heart, then she drew me next to the heart. She said I could marry her daddy. I told her that I was already married.

This is a Nanci Griffith song that used to really get to me. It still does sometimes

Goodnight To A Mother's Dream
Words & Music By Nanci Griffith
© 1994 Ponder Heart Music/Irving Music Inc. (BMI)
Flippin' bottle caps through the ring around the moon
All alone on a Saturday night with the stars in bloom
I am a vision of my mother's dream come true
Built this house out in the hills
All by my own will
I've got love enough for two
But it's just me and this old moon

Chorus:
And the sailors on the water
...They all want the captain's daughter
They want her beauty and her youth
To grace their bow out on the sea
Me, I'm getting older and I'm plain
As plain can be
Got a bank full of mother's dreams
Maybe mother just didn't see
That love would be the only thing
Her daughter would ever need

Bridge:
Oh, I am the heart not taken
The one thought not worth breakin'
I am the late blooming rose
With only her mother's dream to hold
On this less traveled road
Who really knows
...Maybe the hearts not taken
Are truly made of gold

I'm gonna flip one more bottle cap up at the moon
I've got an early call with so much work to do
But, when I go inside I'm gonna let my back door slam
Mother, to tell you the truth
I would trade your dream away
Just to hear some loved one say
I love you, too

(Repeat chorus)

Tag:
Say goodnight to the moon
I'll say I love you to the moon...
And to my mother too
'Buenos suenos' to the moon

One more Nanci Griffith...The Flyer
Words & Music By Nanci Griffith
© 1994 Ponder Heart Music/Irving Music Inc. (BMI)
He was a flyer for the Air Force
On a plane from San Antonio
I was traveling to London
He was going off to Buffalo
Changing planes in Pittsburgh
We got grounded in a storm
And, I would give anything
To be on that flyer's arm

We played cards, mostly blackjack
As we sat out on the tarmac
We sang songs we knew in Spanish
As we both loved songs of language
He'd heard me on the radio
I'd seen the flyers of San Antone
And, I would give anything
To have that flyer for my own

Chorus:
God bless the flyer
Who would be flying home tonight
Cuz' I would give anything
To see that flyer, flyin' tonight

He said he'd never married
Cuz, his heart was in the clouds
And I said I was too clumsy
That I broke the wings of the loves I found
He shouted out his name to me
As I ran to make my flight
I would give anything
To see that flyer, flyin' tonight

One year I watched a war in London
In the airport leaving London
And I wondered if I'd know him
If I saw his wings in motion
Did I leave my heart in Pittsburgh...
In the lightning of that flight?
I wish that you could tell me now
Will he be flyin' home tonight?

(Repeat chorus twice)

I have caught up with all the posts from Oscar Day.

I'm listening to Donald's show right now. A compilation of Company recordings. I have the new cast recording (even though I loathe the production). It sounds better on CD than it plays on stage, but when you hear the original cast recording against the 3 other recordings (Roundabout 1995, London 1996 and the new one), there is no question which recording is superior - and it AIN'T the new one.

Early on in the home computer days, I became fascinated with midis.  I bought Cakewalk in order to create my own.  But since I didn't have a keyboard to input the notes, I would open up Cakewalk's staff view and meticulously copy the treble and base lines note-for-note from sheet music or vocal scores.  Sometimes it came out great, sometimes not (the older versions of Cakewalk did not allow for recreating some notation such as slide notes.)  My "magnum opus" was creating a midi of the FOLLIES overture with all of the orchestra parts, copied from the full score book.  It sounded terrific--until I hit some button that flattened out the entire thing somehow and, to top it off, I accidentally saved the file that way.  That was very discouraging.

I'd like to get into doing this again.  DRs Elmore, Jose, Penny-O and JMK have all talked at one time or another about a piece of software called Finale.  Would that be a good system to work with for creating midis?

On a positive note, I had the BEST time at work last night. A group called Road Recovery comes in to work with the kids for 3 months to prepare a musical performance. The kids choose which group they want to be a part of: singing, percussion, or dance, then rehearse different aspects of the performance. There will be a show in May. They've encouraged staff to take part so I joined the singing group. I had a blast, it was great to see the kids so enthusiastic and passionate. So I guess in the end it all balances out.

I can't remember, did hiro's father see him use his ability on the last show he was on? If so what did he see?

That is such an interesting point about bringing hiro in. I wonder if maybe his father knew about his abilities all along and he was "adopted" the same way claire was.

Good morning, HHW!

Yes, I meditate and love it. There are different styles of meditation. I do mine lying down rather than sitting in a lotus position, and I use a meditation tape. I find it very relaxing. On days when I'm really stressed I don't get as deeply relaxed, and hence, it's not as good a meditation, but I'm still better off for it.

Wednesday morning greetings!  I popped in earlier to say HI to DT(Dear Traveller) Cillaliz, but this is my official log-in for the day.

Question for BK:  As I've listened to the BRAIN, I've wondered if the script is place-bound to the San Fernando Valley, or would you rewrite the geographical references to fit different locations?

Yesterday DR RonP wrote re: HEROES

SPOILERI can't remember, did hiro's father see him use his ability on the last show he was on? If so what did he see?

That is such an interesting point about bringing hiro in. I wonder if maybe his father knew about his abilities all along and he was "adopted" the same way claire was.

Revealing that Hiro's father is part of "the company" does kind of confuse things.  If Hiro was known to be different and was adopted like Claire, there is no way that his father would have let him leave Japan in the first place, let alone allow him to continue with his quest.  And if his father didn't know about him, well that's a bit of an amazing coincidence.  But then, that's the stuff of drama.

!!!!!  SUPER SPOILER  !!!!!

Some sharp-eyed people on a message board I read have noticed that in HRG's flashback, the young Haitian was wearing an amulet around his neck that is the same symbol as Jessica's tattoo.  Not only that, but the same symbol appears on Hiro's sword.  What do you think of that?

Oy! What a morning I've had!

My friend Jeff called at the crack of dawn (actually 8:15, I was just getting out of bed) saying he needed to be taken to the emergency room. So, I threw on clothes and raced over there to get him. Took him to the closest hospital (had never been to the emergency side of the building, and it was a MAZE), and then took me a long time to find visitor parking and get back to the emergency room to check on him. It was at least an hour before a doctor came in to check him out. Some sort of intestinal flu that's going around. They were going to give him some medicine and fluids and we how he responded, so I came back home. I'll know later if he's to be admitted or to be released and then I can go pick him up or visit as needed.

Actor Bruce Bennett (aka Herman Brix) died at age 100 of complications from a broken hip Saturday at Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center.

Olympic athlete turned actor who played Tarzan in the 1930s then went on to play leads and character roles for the next several decades. He made many recent appearences at the Ray Courts Show in Burbank over the last few years.

Many HHWers will recall him as Joan Crawfords husband in MILDRED PEIRCE or as the hero in THE COSMIC MAN and THE ALLIGATOR PEOPLE.

CIRCUIT is on DVD.  I became aware of the movie because it was on the film festival rounds the same time as Dear Friend Joe Triebwasser's film FRIENDS AND FAMILY, and both films happened to feature the amazingly talented Brian Lane Green.  (Interestingly, Brian Lane Green plays the "plain-looking" boyfriend in CIRCUIT - now, that's acting!)

Brian Lane Green played supporting roles in FRIENDS AND FAMILY and CIRCUIT, but even though he's not a celeb, when he would show up at the screenings, heads would turn in a "who IS that?" manner.  Definitely has star quality, another person I'm shocked hans't hit it even bigger than he has.  But I think he's more interested in becoming known as a writer.

I am, however, a medication sort.  I strongly advise that anyone who even suspects that they may be chronically depressed see their doctor - the meds have improved my life immeasurably, not to mention the lives of those around me.

Yes, my ritual is to say, "Hoo and ray, I don't have to be in this ugly, dank rehearsal room anymore!"

I'm a huge fan of '24,' but this season isn't topping last season (or the first season, in my mind the two best seasons of the show). This week's episode was more set-up than execution (except for the very end, of course), and I'm hopeful now that the scheming Logan is back in the picture, things will pick up. Powers Boothe as the VP should also provide some much needed chicanery.

Question for BK:

What were the first and last comedy albums you ever purchased?

Two answers for the first part: Mr. Magoo in Hi-Fi would be the real first comedy album - I loved that album.  First comedian comedy album would have been the first Shelly Berman album - also had Bob Newhart and Louis Nye albums, but Shelly was first.

Last comedy album - Derek and Clive: Live

My first question for ASK BK day:

Which movie biography of which person do you think most accurately reflects that person's life?

And which is the worst distortion of the reality?

It's so hard to know which accurately reflects since I have never actually known anyone who's had a film made from their life.  The worst distortion - so many - Night and Day and the more recent Cole Porter pic come to mind.

Was Love Me Or Leave Me faithful to Miss Etting's real story?  I love the Jolson Story - but I think it's pretty fanciful, even though Jolie was involved.

Agreed -- I actually was quite excited at Greg Itzin's return...a little more so than usual due to the lack of...whatever it is from this season.  And Powers Boothe - yessssss...

I guess I feel like they are using too many of the old conventions and not exploring new area.  I mean, watch Keifer play with the family stuff is great - if it were a complex, intimate drama - but not for 24, because the plots have to be unusually far-fetched to make it work.

The only thing that hooked me (and I thought was going to really propel this season forward) was the nuke in Valencia...but it seems like they might have blown their load too early...

From yesterday's New York Times:

‘Grease’ Car Makes Pit Stop

By LAWRENCE VAN GELDER
A vehicle carrying the Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson of a Dutch production of the musical "Grease" wound up in the orchestra pit during a performance on Sunday night in Almere, nine miles east of Amsterdam, The Associated Press reported.

Jim Bakkum as Danny, the role played by John Travolta in the 1978 film, suffered a concussion, and Bettina Holwerda, in the role played by Olivia Newton-John, might have broken her arm, Dutch television was told by Peter Swinkels, the director of the Almere City Theater.

No musicians were injured when the car, made up of the chassis of a red-and-white convertible and the engine of a golf cart, landed in an empty part of the pit.

An omen of what's to come this summer on Broadway?

Okay i am still madly in love with blake (beat boxer guy).  And my other favorites are the same as last week (Chris richardson (justin timberlake guy), chris s(guy with big bushy hair) and phil (guy with the baby) ).

I really liked Chris R last night. And was pleasantly surprised that the judges loved him. His song was so different from anything i've seen on idol. I just find him sweet.

I did not like phil's song. But i agree with simon. He is popular and will be back next week.

The ones i am worried for are jared and nick. I don't care for them. I also don't care for aj, but the judges really praised him this week (which could save him).

I thought sundance was much better. I wonder if he will belt out big numbers like that each week from now on.

As for sunjaya, i thought he was better than last week (how could he not be). But he sings so shy and timdly. But he is popular. So he'll probably be safe. He has talent, so i sure hope he steps things up.

SPOILER

Revealing that Hiro's father is part of "the company" does kind of confuse things.  If Hiro was known to be different and was adopted like Claire, there is no way that his father would have let him leave Japan in the first place, let alone allow him to continue with his quest.  And if his father didn't know about him, well that's a bit of an amazing coincidence.  But then, that's the stuff of drama.

Some sharp-eyed people on a message board I read have noticed that in HRG's flashback, the young Haitian was wearing an amulet around his neck that is the same symbol as Jessica's tattoo.  Not only that, but the same symbol appears on Hiro's sword.  What do you think of that?

More Spoilage!

I don't think Hiro's father, or anyone, COULD have stopped Hiro from leaving Japan, since it's a matter of "mind" power.  Of course, they could medicate him so that he couldn't concentrate....but then they'd have to know about his power first.

Since Hiro only recently discovered his power (we saw him use it for the first time in the first episode), it's unlikely anyone in "the company" knew what it would be, but YES! It is possible they knew he was "different"...all have a genetic marker.  He may be adopted, but his father was certainly wanting him to take over the family business (which Hiro ceded to his sister).

Interesting observation about that "symbol"!  Has anyone noted that Jessica has it, but Nicki doesn't?

I thought sundance was much better. I wonder if he will belt out big numbers like that each week from now on.

As for sunjaya, i thought he was better than last week (how could he not be). But he sings so shy and timdly. But he is popular. So he'll probably be safe. He has talent, so i sure hope he steps things up.

If there were any JUSTICE, Sunjaya and A.J. would be the ones going home tomorrow night.

Chris Sligh and Chris Richardson were very good.  Blake Lewis was terrific.  Sundance Head was terrific.  Phil Stacey has a nice voice....bad song choice, IMO, but safe.

Jared and Nick should definitely worry a bit, though.  Sunjaya's got the John Stevens thing going for him...i.e., so-so performer with large, tin-eared fan base.

I've forgotten one of them....and because of that, he should worry, too.

I felt so bad for Sunjaya while he was performing. Trying to emulate that style of singing and dress only served to emphasis how young and inexperienced he is. It's like he was wearing a flashing red sign that lit up saying "I have no place in this competition."  Of course, that's just my opinion.

I remember your Shelly Berman "phase", Bruce. There was a joke about an elderly couple. One would say to the other, "Do you want to go to sleep or what?" And the other, hard of hearing, would reply, "What? What?" How you loved that joke! I still chuckle over it--and you, telling it.

You and Jennifer are spot on with your AI reviews/comments.  However, I do like Nick's voice (smokey and sexy -- whatever) but Simon is right his lack of stage presence is gonna kill him if he doesn't step up the "it" factor and even if he does I think those younger hip guys have got it down and will be hard to beat at this point.  Phil will have the same problem (nice voice but the others know how to work the stage and have their inididual image thing going)  AJ hands down should be outta there (terrible job and I'm with Simon, I love puppies too...but...) and Sujaya out to offer to pack his bags, too, after his last two times on stage...

I had to LOL regarding Simon and AJ -- Simon can be wickedly, but spot on, delicious in his comments, but I loved the "funny sarcasm" he was using on AJ -- and smiling all the while -- that puppy comment (LOL) and sending out BD wishes to his mom and talking about how he loved grandmas too, but...I don't want him to change, but I hope he throws this into the mix a little more often, too.

and a good one -- spot on as I say  (he comes across as being very uncomfortable on stage which is the kiss of death for any performer, much less one trying to be the next AI). He actually showed more confidence during the audition -- that goes to show the difference between someone who's just a good singer and one who's a good performer -- you gotta know how to work that stage -- and audience -- too.  But I'm preaching to the choir cause we all know that -- which makes you wonder why don't they know that -- they don't have a clue..

Uh-oh, then I need to amend ALL of my AI comments -- I was getting AJ and Brandon and Jared mixed up (which might hint at problems for them cause it shows they aren't standing out).  Brandon's Time After Time is the one that I didn't like and he was the one who Simon was using the puppy remark with -- I didn't like Jared either -- sang okay but very bad dance moves -- that hand over the face thing -- which I couldn't believe Randy liked -- I thought he came across as cheesy.  And the tennis shoes with the suit -- he only needed some white gloves and he would have looked like a dancing cartoon character (you know those little animal ones that would be dressed like humans and dancing and singing in white gloves and spats and/or white shoes).  Anyway, if Brandon sang Time After Time, he should be gone.  Brandon is cute and is the back-up singer, but as Simon says it's a singing competition, so his Time After Time, to me, was the worst performance last night (though I had thought he was pretty good up to last night) and Sanjya (however you spell it) right behind -- or even tied, but Brandon's excuses put him over the top for me.  I hope I have my critique straight now -- but I guess it doesn't matter -- I think Brandon, AJ, Jared, and Sanjaya are all on the chopping block unless they pull a rabbit out of their collective hats...just my long-winded opinion....

Good Afternoon!

Ah, Progress.  I hope.

Instead of heading out into the glorious sunshine, I just made a second pass through the eight "boxes-o-stuff" I made an initial pass through yesterday.  Now I'm down to two boxes of music xeroxes, and just four b-o-s.  -And one bag for recycling, and one bag for the trash.

HOO and RAY!

And one b-o-s is a box of books I'll probably end up taking down to the buyer's counter at Strand Books.

Yes, there are lots of slips of papers (old bills, receipts, etc.) that will need a bit more scrutiny, but, for now, I think it was a good way to get things started.

And I didn't get that overwhelming feeling like I did last week.

-And only 30 more boxes to go!  :-\

I was first introduced to Follies via "Follies in Concert", so that recording will always hold a special place in my heart.  I just wish that when the DVD was released it would have included more footage of the concert.

I like the Papermill CDs, and it's very nice to have all that extra material on disc, but some of the performers just don't sit well on my ears.

Of course, there's also the London revival with Diana Rigg.  Totally different animal.  -Although, I do love the album art.  -Which I think is the primary reason I've kept the LP set all these years.  *And some of the featured solo piano lines almost sound freakishly fast to me - the intro to "Live, Laugh, Love" in particular.

I prefer to listen to the "In concert" "Follies". I love the incomplete OBC and enjoy the others. I still don't like the Concert version of "Who's that Woman". I would if Woman was not pronounced "WomIN".

The London version is always worth a listen for the new songs.  I find the Papermill somehow is less "emotional".

The DVD of the concert really has impact.  The distance between the rehearsals and the performance by Stritch is amazing.

I prefer the Papermill FOLLIES to the FOLLIES IN CONCERT. I think Papermill was beautifully cast. Elaine Stritch is an icon, but I loathe her "Broadway Baby." Maybe because I saw Ethel Shutta do it in the original, but I really don't like Stritch's version at all though I'll admit I'm in the minority as it brings down the house.

I also don't care for Carol Burnett's verion of "I'm Still Here."

I also had time to catch up on all the viewing from last night that was recorded. I began with VERONICA MARS, and I guessed the murderer's identity correctly! Hooray for me! It's the first one of the four big mysteries that the show has had since it began that I've ever gotten right.

When it returns, there won't be any long story mysteries but instead a single mystery per episode. I'll be interested to see if that changes the dynamic of the show at all.

The other night, I watched an episode of LAW & ORDER: CI from season 2 that starred Lee Tergesen, and last night's episode featured him again (aplaying a different character, of course) as the victim of radiation poisoning slowly dying as the police scurry to find the killer. An interesting episode and very different vibe for this show. It was patterned after the famous noir D.O.A.

LAW & ORDER: SVU had a very unusual episode as well. The central mystery involved a string of abductions in which men were being raped. Usually, that alone would have been enough for an episode.

But this one also included a much more interesting story involving Olivia finally tracking down her half brother whom she only recently learned existed. He's been under surveillance as a rapist (not connected to the other rape case above), and she's torn between supporting her new sibling and believing what the evidence is suggesting to her that he's guilty.

Next, I put in THE GANG'S ALL HERE from the Alice Faye box. I didn't start with the feature. Instead, I watched an included bonus film, the last one ever made by Faye in which she looked back over her career and offered a few highlights, made for the drug company (I think it was a drug company; maybe it was an exercise regimen) she was representing at the time.

After I finished that, I did start the feature and watched about 15 minutes of it. Already I can see the problem: one scene with exquisite Technicolor followed by one that looks rather washed out.

I think I read somewhere that the separation masters were long gone for the film, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised it looks like this.

Yesterday Mr. Barnum said:

Everyone has a myspace page except for me.

Nope, Mikey, this old man doesn't have one either. Nor does Anthony. Three of us anyway. Something tells me Tom in Australia doesn't have a myspace page either  :D

I don't have a myspace either

Question for Jose - When someone (hypothetically, Jose) offers to take someone (hypothetically, Cason) on a trip (hypothetically, to France), are they offering just to buy that person a plane ticket, or are they offering to finance that peron's entire trip, soup to nuts (so to speak)?

:)

In Jose's case, I am quite certain that he meant from soup to nuts!

I go to New York and say take care of yourself for a few days I need a break ;)

Oh, an YES I AM HERE!!!!!

It was an uneventful flight. The Omaha area could have close to a foot of snow by tomorrow when my flight was supposed to go so, I'm so glad I came today.

I love the Edison already.  I checked in and the clerk said - "They have you in a tiny room, I'll just upgrade you to a king room, would that be all right"  It's a great sized room for one person with a desk, a chair with a foot stool and the whole tv entertainment thingy.   My room is really close to Broadway and 47th, so it may be noisy, we'll see.

DR Cillaliz, welcome to NY! Glad you like the Edison. The coffee shop is a staple---many recording deals were signed there and it reeks of ambience.

DR Jose is right; I've stayed there many times and in a few instances have run into groups of noisy high school kids. But maybe you'll be OK since it's the middle of the week.

If you go out the south entrance, look to your left and you'll see a staircase that is probably roped off. It goes up to a very old recording studio that, when last I heard, was owned by Lenny Kravitz. I tried sneaking up there once but got busted. :-(

Follies - for me there's only one Follies, truncated or not, and that's the OBC.  Period.  The concert version has some of the most brittle and ugly sound I've ever heard, and I don't like the performances at all.  The Papermill version is not well-recorded - it sounds tinny and bad - and I don't really care for those performances either.  Nope, the OBC and only the OBC.  For cut songs, I prefer the versions that I've recorded of That Old Piano Roll (or whatever it's called) which is much better on the Unsung Sondheim album than it is in its pathetic version on Papermill's album.  Larry's chart is glorious.  And the recording of It Wasn't Meant To Happen by Michele Pawk is, for me, definitive, and the orchestration by David Siegel is wonderful.

Back from the Music Center function, which was basically a press conference for the New Musicals venture happening in LA in 2008.  It was the usual back-clapping affair, with lots of speeches and bragging.  There were some musical performances by Stephen Schwartz, Jason Robert Brown, Georgia Stitt, Michael Arden, and Jason Alexander - in other words - the LA clique of which I've never been a part.  They all sang songs of their own concocting.  The Arden song from his proposed musical version of - wait for it - Ripley (not based on the Ripley of Believe It Or Not, which would at least be interesting - but The Talented Mr. Ripley, maybe the stupidest idea for a musical I've ever heard) was the worst - no shape, no line, and its repeated use of one character name - Dickie - does not work in a lyric - it is amusing, not its intended effect.  The JRB song (from a musical version of Honeymoon In Vegas - when will this madness stop???) took a long time to find its joke, but was okay - he really had to "sell" the song, like an actor, instead of just letting the song speak for itself.  Georgia's song was cute, Stephen's song was not one of his best, and Jason A's song was - well, we like Jason A. as an actor, and I don't think songwriting is necessarily going to be his strong suit.

I saw lots of people I know and like - Karen Morrow, the Bergmans, Michael Kerker, David Zippel, and several people who seemed to know me and were very sweet.  I hadn't spoken to Miss Stitt since we worked together on After The Fair - she, of course, is now Mrs. JRB.

It's going to be too close to call right now, in terms of shattering our previous "hits" record.  We're currently at 123,000 hits, and we have to get to 126,000.  We're doing great today, posting-wise, but we simply need more "hits" and I'm never sure how that works.  Still, there's plenty of day left, but so far today we've had only about 2900 hits, so we'd have to keep pace to beat the old record.  Can we?  I think it will be so close that we may have to go right up until midnight.

I have a copy of the 40th Anniversary issue of Variety (1973/74) and there are two FULL PAGE ads from somebody named Jeanne Baird.

One is a photo of said person....the other is some type of fable about a little blonde girl being eaten by wolves.

Patterned socks for dressing up....white crew socks with gray toes/heels just because they are easy to find and buy.  I also have some plain white crew socks for sneakers and casual wear.

Right now I am wearing white crew socks, one has gray toe and heel, the other is gray from toe to heel including the sole....I do not know where their mates are.

Wouldn't a "hit" on this here site be the number of times folks visited?

Instead of staying "logged in", we should each get out of HHW.com, then reenter.  Get out.  Reenter.  Get out.  Reenter.

Don't know how many times each we should do this.

If 10 of us worked at -- did it 300 times -- the final record would be set.

But with folks tending to stay logged on all day, this is a record that probably won't break easily.

Here's a question for anyone that wants to answer.  I've been reading Ted Chapin's book "Everything Was Possible" The story about the rehearsal process for "Follies" and it's quite good.  Of course it has made me listen to everything "Follies" that's been recorded.  Realizing the Original Broadway Cast is the best, what do people think about the PaperMill recording or "Follies In Concert"?

I value the Papermill for its near completeness (there are some cuts in "Loveland," and I think the  mix is poor in a few spots.  I was at the Folllies in concert event, but it wasn't FOLLIES for me: too upbeat, too many adjustments to the score to accommodate stars, and I thought Mandy Patinkin's ego way over the top in "Buddy's Blues."  When Barbara Cook, at the end of the evening, said "I'm so glad I came," I thought, this ain't the FOLLIES I love.  Sally is truly unhinged at the end, and the conclusion of the show should be unsettling and melancholic.  Why do you think so many hated the original with such vehemence?

What are your feelings regarding toe socks? What about the practice of wearing socks with sandals? Do you prefer plain all-one-color socks or socks with patterns, stripes, and so on?

And why am I thinking about socks all of a sudden?

Sandra, you are at the age when sox is one those subjects that is bound to dominate all of your waking moments.

Just came from a festive Mexican dinner with my mother, sister, and brother-in-law.  My sister and her husband, who live in Michigan, have been in Florida for a couple of weeks and are staying at my mom's until the weather looks clear enough up north for them to head home.  They may be here a while.

Good Evening!

Well, that was nice surprise... Since I was about to head out to get something to eat... And since DR Cillaliz wanted to grab a bite to eat after her trip in...  I headed on down to the Edison, and then guided Cillaliz over to 9th Avenue, and headed up to 54th.  We ended up supping at El Centro - a nice little Mexican place.

Good food.  Good drinks.  Good company.  Good conversation.

After dinner we walked around Times Square until I needed to head back down underground to catch the train back uptown.  -"Idol", ya know.  (Sad, but true.)  As for DR Cillaliz.... Well, she's a grown woman.   I'm sure she'll be fine.

;)

I haven't done a press release on those two sites because it's not really a theater album.  I have posted on All That Chat and the broadwayworld message board.

BK, I think you should anyway.  David's a wonderful composer, and I'd think anyone who loves BABY and the two revues would love to buy the CD.

Oh, and I guess that would make the basis for a good - I hope - Ask BK Day Question...

Is there a moment - a lyric/word, harmony, melodic turn, etc. - in a song that you absolutely adore that puzzles you?

In LE MIZ there is one rhyming stanza that makes no sense to me.  All the other rhyming patterns in the show are pretty ordinary.  However, in Castle on a Cloud there are these lines:

There is a room that's full of toys,
There are a hundred boys and girls,
Nobody shouts or talks too loud,
Not in my castle on a cloud.

Why in the world did they reverse boys and girls?  It makes no sense, and every time I hear it on the CD, it takes me out of the moment.

Okay, okay, I have a dull life!

No, that's not Joshie. His name is Max and I don't know him. I got the picture from StuffOnMyCat.com and I thought it was funny.

StuffOnMyCat.com is a website with a collection of pictures of cats with stuff on them. I want to submit a picture of Joshie under a shoelace if I can find one.

And toe socks are very comfortable. I'm still wearing the one I put on for the picture, and my left foot is noticeably more comfortable than my right one.

I was very shocked and scared. We wasted no time getting out of there! My stomach really really hurt for a few hours afterwards. But once the police got there, I knew we were safe.

It was a photo lineup. The detective brought a paper with six photos. I picked the right one.

No. They evacuated all the motor homes, then they led us all to another building next door which happened to have folks inside. We heard nothing and saw nothing after that. Once in a while, a young pfficer would come in and give us an update. Usually the update was that nothing had happened.

DR JOSE, I think your approach is a good one. I know how overwhelming it can be. I always like to get through the easy stuff first, so I can see progress right away. That always feels good and then the momentum starts to build. Once I get on a roll it's easier.

On Sunday I was going through some books from college-ugh! yes! I do have difficulty throwing out books. But now I'm past that hurdle and it's just easier somehow. The other day a friend, who buys even more books than I do, said, "But how can you throw out BOOKS???" But I am! For me, books are the most difficult of all.

Happy tossing!

While I'd like to think we might make it to the new "hits" record, I don't think it will happen by midnight.  It's just moving too slowly.  If there were even one more day in this month it would have been easy.  But, we've smashed every other record to smithereens.  Of course, anything's possible in the next four hours.

DR SANDRA, I am a sock lover. I did not, however, learn to appreciate socks until I came to the East Coast. California just isn't sock country. I do not, however, wear socks with sandals. It gets too freakin' hot here for that! Favorite socks are soft and cuddly and warm.

Reading a list of the Awards was enough information for me.  I don't really care who wore what or said what.
The fashions and the speeches have no influence on the results and IMHO are not in the least entertaining.

Last night's viewing here was "Lavendar Ladies".  Yes it is a "slight" film but what wonderful performances from the stars. It was interesting to see Dame Judi in a role that certainly contrasted quite markedly from her role in "Notes On A Scandal" which we had watched the day before.

I finished THE GANG'S ALL HERE when I went back downstairs. The transfer is too dark for much of the movie thus robbing the color of brilliance.

In the featurette on Busby Berkeley, clips from the film are used that are a lot brighter and more vibrantly saturated than in the film proper. The bananas in "The Lady with the Tutti-Fruiti Hat" are much yellower in the clips than in the film, for example.

BK favorite Dr. Drew Casper also contributes commentary during the film, but I didn't get around to listening to any of it.

DR Edi, I know what staircase you are talking about and right now it isn't roped off.  I was thinking of going up there tomorrow and if stopped acting like I'm just lost...I'll let you know if I see anything

IDOL tonight:

The singers who blazed forth last week did so again tonight. LaKisha was very smart in singing "Midnight Train to Georgia" with enough voice and sass without trying to overpower it into something more than it is. She can't come out and eat up the audience every week, so I found it a wise move to sing something familiar with her own spin on it but not oversung.

Melinda did a sensational "My Funny Valentine" that was the knockout rendition of the night for me. She is unquestionably my favorite in the competition this year. I called her number about an hour and a quarter after IDOL went off, and it was busy, so that's a great sign for her.

Alaina was weak (she whines when she sings), Leslie's song was a messy effort, Jordin's "Reflection" was up and down in quality, Gina sounded a tad sharp to me, and Haley's "Queen of the NIght" was very ordinary.

If I had to pick two going home, it would be Alaina and Leslie, but Antonella, Jordin, and Haley are also vulnerable

I feel the same about FOLLIES in Concert.  Also, like DR Matt, I dislike Stritch's rendition of "Broadway Baby".  The song became a in-joke, sung with a wink to the crowd.  She didn't do right by it until she sang it in AT LIBERTY.  And Carol Burnett's "I'm Still Here" was flat and vacant.

And while I appreciated the effort of the Papermill Playhouse recording, none of the performances were memorable with the exception of Ann Miller, and that was just because of her strange delivery.

Janis Ian was lip synching a song here on  TV and her guitar string broke. It was a funny moment! Boy she really tied one on.

Where is resident Janis Ian expert td?

Lipps Inc has destroyed ability to spell lips Synch.

Besides, I was busy refreshing like a fiend since that was the mission tonight, and not multiple postings.

The Official Rules for Hit The Wall And Yell At The Boys:

It's a team sport, boys versus girls. The girls get into the playhouse. The boys run around outside the playhouse. Every once in a while, the boys pound on the wall. The girls hit the wall a fast as they can and then run to the doorway of the playhouse. They yell as loudly as they can at the boys. The boys run away.

When do you think the ticket prices will "quietly" be raised to $120.00/121.25/122.50 per ticket?

:-\

*Although, I do have to say that when I was in LA for What If? I was very surprised that the regular top ticket price at the Pantages was already $125 - with the "regular" Premium seats going for $150 - for Hairspray.  -And that was three years ago.

eeek...I happen to think the top row seats in the balcony were wonderful for Hairspray (only 30 dollars). It allowed my row of friends plenty of dancing and singing aloud room. I must say the LA Audience was not pleased with our unruly behavior, yet it was encouraged in NY where we saw it twice and the cast thanked us personally for our energy afterwards.

eeek...I happen to think the top row seats in the balcony were wonderful for Hairspray (only 30 dollars). It allowed my row of friends plenty of dancing and singing aloud room. I must say the LA Audience was not pleased with our unruly behavior, yet it was encouraged in NY where we saw it twice and the cast thanked us personally for our energy afterwards.

I do recall the rather large difference in price between the orchestra and upper balcony seats.  -And at least by sitting in the balcony, you're able to look at that wonderful ceiling.  -Which, apparently, is not allowed to be photographed.

I did! We went to Chipotle, which is a Mexican fast food chain that we had never tried. It was surprisingly good---the meat is organically grown on family farms, no chemicals or antibiotics. And a strong margarita!

When the Vixter was turned 6 we had a birthday party for her,  during which  we set up her  PlayHut popup playhouse and the Vixter and about 20 of her dearest and nearest little friends all crammed themselves in and began jumping up and down shouting "No boys allowed  in here! No boys allowed in here!"

I suspect she would be a natural at "Hit the Wall and Yell at the Boys"

And then there was this paragraph that caught my eye in an article/interview with Paul Deen:

Quote

IS mayonnaise the food lover’s Botox?

One look at Paula Deen, the Food Network’s face of Southern food, and you have to wonder. Ms. Deen may be best known for drinking straight melted butter on television, but she also soaks Krispy Kreme doughnuts with custard, deep-fries refrigerator biscuits, and isn’t above digging her diamond-crusted fingers into a bowl of pimento cheese to make sure the cream cheese is blending in smoothly. In one afternoon last week, making the Southern lunch classics that started her cooking career — ham salad, pimento cheese, and an irresistible egg salad mixed with saltines — she went through two full jars of mayonnaise.

"two full jars of mayonnaise"?!?!?!?!?

Now that's a LOT of mayo!

We dood it!  We have now smashed every previous haineshisway.com record to smithereens.  I knew we could - and we did it two hours before midnight.

Any Wednesday is bad - while I've been enduring it, I've been paging through the play - which is very cute and funny.  The film spends twenty minutes setting up the plot - in the play, the audience understands the plot by the middle of page two.

Yes, fearless leader, we will make haste to the review posting places....and will report back after we have completed our mission...

...must be something in the air up here on Cloud 9...I'm just giddy and can't seem to stop posting...I thought the Global Moderator would meet me at the Pearly Gate to personally welcome me in -- but no sign of him yet...

Miss Karen, becoming a HainesHisWay God(dess) is not so much literally going to the preverbial HHW Heavens, but more a sense of experiencing a new, enlightened state of being.  Just revel in the knowledge that you're now "one of us!"

;D

Well, indeed it seems this is the report we get from Amazon:

To write a customer review: you must have used this account to complete a purchase* of an item from Amazon.com. Please wait 24 hours after your first purchase before writing a review.
* A purchase requirement is used to maintain review quality.

It does seem you have to purchase something off Amazon before you can ever write a review... no fun...

Sad to be all alone in the world...

That quote from the man who just posted "you are one of us"..."experiencing a new enlightened state of being"  -- how could you ever feel you're all alone when you're a HHW God?  Jorge, snap out it, you got the HHWers in your corner, man...
