Well, dear readers, we had us a final dress/tech last night and while I was fearing the absolute worst, it ran pretty smoothly, with no stops. We had projections for the first time, and while the timing was occasionally off they worked. We also had sound for the first time. The blend I heard prior to the show, between voices and band was really good – however, all that seemed to disappear once the show began, so hopefully tonight that good initial sound will return. It was also the cast’s first time in costume – the costumes are wonderful, and they made all their changes, so that was good. The lighting was weird, and the designer had to fix all that – it was all fine in the cue to cue and it’s almost all different now – if you like PINK, if Think Pink is your favorite song, well, that’s what we had. PINK. So, all that has to be fixed and was, of course, right at one point. So, he’ll be in today to do all those adjustments and the cast and I will be there at six to check them. The stage manager did pretty well with the light cues, save for either going out too soon or too late on a few of them – but she’s beginning to understand the flow and how and where the blackouts and fades need to happen. The cast did very well and as rough as the lighting and sound was, you can see there’s a very good show in there and hopefully we’ll fix all issues over the two previews. I gave a few notes after, and that was that. I came home and because I’d only eaten a small chicken salad sandwich earlier, I ordered in two McDonald’s items, which arrived very quickly, and I ate those very quickly. Then I had to write some e-mails and as I was doing so, the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra serenaded me with some very pretty Mendelssohn music. This box set really is one of the best.
Yesterday was basically okay. I got eight-and-a-half hours of sleep, so that was good. I got up, answered e-mails, our car accident actress, while still a little sore, was feeling pretty good, so that was good. I’d pre-ordered my chicken salad sandwich and that arrived around one and I ate it all up. I ordered it with fries, but they were soggy and cold and I threw them in the trash. Then I got ready and moseyed on over to the theater, worked on the sound with the designer, and then the cast arrived and we got them into their mics – we only have eight lavs and I assigned those. We have three hanging mics that do a really good job, too. The band arrived and we got that nice blend that I then never heard again. But we’ll get it back before the show this evening. And the rest you know.
Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll do whatever needs doing, I’ll eat something light, I’ll hopefully pick up some packages, and then I’ll mosey on over to the theater, get the cast in mics, then when the band arrives at seven, we’ll get the sound mix right or as right as we can get it. Then we’ll play our first preview. I’m hoping we have a decent-size crowd. I will, of course, have a full report.
Tomorrow is more of the same and then we play the second of our two previews. Friday, I’ll write my thank-you notes and just relax until it’s time to go to the theater. Then we play our opening night performance. After, there’ll be some kind of partay. Saturday, I can relax and just rest and begin to attend to some things I haven’t had time to deal with, then I’ll see our Saturday evening show. Sunday is our matinee and I’ll see that. Then Monday is a ME day come hell or high or even low water. Then I have tons of catching up to do.
Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, do whatever needs doing, hopefully pick up packages, eat, go to the theater, get the sound mix like we had it, and then it’s our first preview. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to have had a fairly smooth dress/tech.
